Ringling Brothers Circus To Do Way With Elephants, All Together, 18 Months Ahead Of Schedule!

The original plan, as I had reported in March 2015, was to end the elephant acts by 2018. They have, bowing to increasing public pressure (some of it untoward in my (informed) opinion), decided to expedite the phase-out by quite a bit — by at least 18 months.

As I talked about in the March post I have mixed feelings about elephants performing in circuses, especially Ringling Brothers and Barnum & Bailey. I would rather see elephants perform than big cats. Having grown up in Ceylon, where elephants are domesticated, I know that elephants, in time, become like good dogs. They are happy to please and doing a few tricks, just like a dog, is no big deal. But, I have seen the documentaries, in particular, ‘An Apology to Elephants‘. So Ringling Brothers are doing the right thing. I am still a tad sad. I am 62 years old and have seen elephant shows all my life. Now, I guess, I will have to go to Sri Lanka, Thailand or India to see performing/working elephants.

Published on Oct 5, 2015 Ringling Brothers and Barnum & Bailey Circus, “Legends”, at the Verizon Arena, Manchester, NH, Sunday, October 4, 2015 — 4pm show. The elephant act in its entirety. Video shot by Deanna using her Olympus camera.

This Being Gallipoli 100th Anniversary “The Water Diviner” Is A Great Enlightening Movie To See.

Saturday, January 9, 2016 marked the 100th anniversary of the ending of the incredibly gruesome World War IGallipoli Campaign‘, 25 April 1915 – 9 January 1916, in which over 112,000 soldiers, from both sides, died — ironically, pretty close to 50:50. The Allies that fought in ‘Gallipoli’ were made up of forces from the U.K., France, Australia, New Zealand, British India & the Dominion of Newfoundland.

Most of us, especially those of us lucky enough to be from the mighty British Commonwealth, obviously, know of ‘Gallipoli’ but would be hard pressed to come up with much details other than that a lot of folks, many of Australia and New Zealand, died. And yes some of us know of and mark ANZAC day.

Well, this movie, is a great way to learn a LOT about what happened in Gallipoli while being entertained to a fairly good yarn and some beautiful cinematography.

HBO had it, i.e., “The Water Diviner“, as its featured Saturday night movie a few weeks ago. I DVRed it and we watched it recently. We liked it. I learnt a lot. So sharing that with you.
