Acorn TV (on Roku) listing. https://acorn.tv/franchise/placetocallhome

We subscribe to “British TV on your Roku” Acorn TV. At $4/month it is a steal. A lot of good stuff in there, such as the new BBC comedy “The Detectorists“.

I saw “A Place to Call Home” in the Acorn catalog and thought that the kids — hooked on British period drama after “Downton Abbey” and “Mr. Selfridge” — might like it. I was right, as I tend to be when it comes to what the kids like to watch. They can’t wait till our ‘daily’ family TV ‘hour’ to watch this show. I am glad.

It is a good show. Well done. Compelling storyline — albeit with some adult themes. It is set in 1953 Australia and that was the year I was born. BUT, I remember that many of the customs and traditions portrayed are ones that we too had in Ceylon.

IF you can get it — watch it. Yes, of course, we are also watching “Indian Summers” & “Home Fires” on PBS. The kids like them both, the STEAMY scenes in the former (though NOT as graphic as in “A Place to Call Home”) having them intrigued, though I can tell that they prefer “Home Fires”! I don’t blame them. So do I. Something is not right with “Indian Summers”. It just does not engage with one as does the other shows. Home this helps.

I had to look up who this ‘Sienna Miller’ is.

My Red Poppy collection — 2015.

Love it. As it should be. Nobody should be appearing in PUBLIC without a Red Poppy.

I blame the TV producers. They should have made sure she wore one — or told her she can’t appear on the show (irrespective of her American roots).

Oh, how I would LOVE to see American’s appearing on TV with Red Poppies. ‘The American Legion’ DOES have a ‘Legion Family Flower of Remembrance‘ program. They, i.e., American Legion, even used to sell a ‘Poppy Puppy. I know. I have one.

I have written to Obama twice asking him to wear a Red Poppy on Veteran’s Day.

The ‘Veterans of Foreign Wars’ (VFW) actually have a ‘Buddy Poppy‘ program. But you rarely see a Red Poppy, in November, in the U.S.

I no longer have ANY British poppies with the two green leaves. I only have Canadian poppies.

U.S. “Buddy” Poppy Puppy — that I bought on eBay.

U.S. Veterans — Shouldn’t They Have Unlimited FREE Admittance To All Our National Parks?

I had never given this any thought until I got the following e-mail this morning.

Wow. U.S. Veterans do NOT automatically have unlimited FREE Admittance to all our National Parks?

Yes, I know that the National Parks need every cent they can get BUT wouldn’t this — i.e., FREE admittance for all veterans — be a GRAND gesture.

I know that Deanna has permanent free access to all the parks because she is officially disabled. So IF we can afford to do this for the disabled, and I know there are other categories that also get free or reduced access, why NOT the veterans. It would appear to be the LEAST we could do.

Look at the millions, if NOT Billions, being spent by the super rich to influence the elections. Couldn’t a few of them band together and give the National Parks $100 M a year (or more) and say this is to provide FREE access to all the veterans.

IF you like this idea run with it.

Here is the e-mail I received this morning — BECAUSE I am registered with ‘Grand Canyon National Park Lodges‘ as somebody who has stayed at the Park.

This was PRETTY AMAZING and AWESOME.

It will be open on Sunday, November 1, 2015. Go take a look.

It is at the corner of Route 28 and Hamwoods Road.
It is put on by Gary Sullivan.

Gary Sullivan, the Master Architect.

Gary has been doing haunted houses for 21 years. But this is his first year in Alton. He moved to Alton from Farmington. Deanna had seen him, over the week, setting it all up. She kept on saying we need to go to the first house on Hamwoods. It was not a house we had normally stopped at in previous years. So I was a bit confused. But then I understood. It was definitely the highlight of the night.

Next year it will be bigger, laid out into the adjoining forest, ADULTS ONLY and there will be a $5 charge. It is FREE this year.

Gary has a HUGE investments in the props that are displayed. I was amazed. Go see. Tell him that the Brown Guy sent you.
