Sunday, September 20, 2015, 11:45 am performance at the Governor’s Lodge.

John Carmichael, from Giffnock, Glasgow (Scotland), by any measure is indeed the ‘Real McCoy’. He is the epitome of a Scot — a traditional one at that. His authentic Scottish tunes and songs, not to mention his delightful stories, transports you back, magically, to the Banks of Lock Lomond in Scotland. With John you can feel the mist rising from the Loch. It is John Carmichael and ‘The Brigadoons‘ that make sure that the NH Scottish Highland Games lives up to its name.

I have always relished listening to and watching John. He has so much talent and personality. A really, really nice guy too (but, in my experience, that is true with most people from Glasgow). Such a delight and what an entertainer. Devanee and I sat and savored his entire set on Sunday morning and we are so glad we did so. He is magic.

I am so glad that I managed to get these pictures so that YOU can get a feel of this exceptional gentleman. Enjoy.

Got this as an e-mail this morning. Yes, I am subscribed to both PBS, NHPTV and Roku.

I have not as yet checked out the updated PBS channel BUT to be fair ANY change probably is an improvement. So I am glad. Though it is one of the first channels that I subscribed to on the Roku 3, the very day I hooked it up, I don’t think we have watched ANYTHING on that channel! We tend to watch PBS shows, “Downton Abbey” & “Mr. Selfridge“, on Amazon. So IF PBS can lure us back that would be BIG. Yes, we also subscribe to ACORN.

I am taking a break from watching cricket and TRYING to watch as much of the Rugby 2015 World Cup as I can. While I was willing to pay to watch the Cricket World Cup 2015, my love for rugby is not as great. So I am content, in a kind of ‘sour grapes’ manner, just to watch the games available for free. So last night I started watching the Samoa v USA match on (NBC) Universal. Saw this Haka — which was called the above, Siva Tau. I love the Haka. Always have. This was good. I gather the New Zealand has a real great one for the World Cup. Haven’t seen it yet. I will share it with you when I do.

Not having the Holy See flag flying in UN Plaza had to do with the Holy See NOT being a Member State. [See above] But, they are now making an exception. The other Permanent Observer to the UN, at present, is Palestine. Wonder whether they will request that their flag is flown too — and the UN, most likely, will have to accede to that request to be fair.

In case you are wondering why it is the ‘Holy See’ as opposed to the ‘Vatican City State’ that is represented at the UN it has ALL to do with HISTORY and politics.

The ‘Holy See’ — a ‘see’ being the office & diocese of a bishop — refers to the Bishopric of Rome; the pope’s most important title being that of the ‘Bishop of Rome‘. The Holy See thus predates the Vatican — as the site of a Christian church (now St. Peter’s) let alone a sovereign state — by a long chalk. The Vatican is where a Roman ‘circus’, an open-air venue for public events, used to be, even up to the time of Emperor (‘as Rome burned’) Nero [54 to 68 BCE]. The first proper Christian church to be built there, the Old St. Peter’s, did not happen till the 4th century. Popes only started residing at the Vatican, on a permanent basis, since the 14th century. It only became a sovereign state in 1929. So that is the FIRST reason why it is the Holy See that conducts diplomatic relations as opposed to the ‘Vatican’. The Holy See was actively involved in International diplomacy prior to the Vatican coming to be.

The next reason is that the Holy See, said to be founded (somewhat uniquely) by two Apostles, is considered to be the seat of power for the entire Catholic Church. So by saying ‘Holy See’ the Vatican is showing that it is representing all the Catholics worldwide as opposed to just a City State. Is that clear? Yes, it can be confusing. But hope this helps.

Ringling Brothers and Barnum & Bailey, the master marketers they are, making use of (‘exploiting’ would be too strong a term) Tuesday’s ‘Elephant Appreciation Day’ to remind us that the circus, with elephants, will be back in town, in Manchester, NH, as usual, for the October circus. There are, I am sure, also trying to make sure that we all appreciate that there will STILL indeed be elephants at this show. Yes, they plan to phase out elephants from their shows but that will NOT be in 2015 or even 2016. But the message is clear — the days of seeing elephants in U.S. circuses are numbered. As I have said before I have mixed feelings about this. While lions and tigers — and rabbits — performing in circuses bother me, greatly, I don’t have a major gripe with elephant, horse or dog acts. Basically I know that these animals will perform to please — while I am not sure about that with lions and tigers. But then there is the whole issue with the training and overall treatment. So in a way it is good that we will soon not be seeing elephants.

Just because the elephants will be in Manchester, PLEASE do not expect to see the elephant parade of old. That is history. Too dangerous with all the protestors. So as has been the case in the last few years the elephants, like the tigers and lions, will be trucked from/to the train and they will even do that during the second half of the performance.

Yes, we will go to the circus as we have for the last 7 or 8 years. I will do another post on the circus … promise.
