I am still, in between trying get my 24th book done, struggling mightily as to what I should about getting my next camera. Given that the goal is to get it for my birthday, as my treat to myself, I have about 3 weeks before I have to pull the trigger.

I thought I had managed to convince myself that I will get the Canon G3X. But, the more I think about it the more I come to the conclusion that I really despise the look of that camera and will really hate owning it. Seems beyond masochistic to spend $1,240 on a camera that I am really going to dislike. Plus masochism has never had that much appeal to me, my life full of pain without me having to resort to self-infliction.

By far the MAIN reason I was trying to convince myself to get the G3X was the 25x optical zoom. That would be nice.

But what about the new, as yet STILL NOT AVAILABLE, Sony RX10 II?

I have found out that the 200mm, 8.3 x optical zoom, is a bit of a misnomer. Sure. If you want to be technical and pedantic, that is all you get, 8.3x, in terms of genuine, bona fide optical zoom. BUT, the Sony offers a ‘Clear Image Zoom‘ and a ‘Digital Zoom‘. With the ‘Clear Image Zoom’ you get 16x, albeit with a reduced pixel count. And with ‘Digital Zoom’ you can get up to 33x. Yes, the G3x also has ‘Digital Zoom’ and that will get you 100x. I could live with 16x. That around a 400mm equivalent. That is more than I have ever had in anything other than a ‘point-and-shoot’.

But the G3X is ugly and you have that god-awful external Electronic Viewfinder (EVF).

That is something else with the Sony RX10 II. It has a 2,359,296 dot resolution EVF. By far one of the highest in the market. That is a HUGE consideration.

So …

Sony RX10 II vs. Canon G3X?

I have noticed one thing. Sony’s documentation is beyond scanty and shabby! Yikes.

I got this letter on Monday, July 27, 2015.

Healthcare.gov was IMPACTED by a frigging problem? So what is bloody new here.

Healthcare.gov, ACA, ObamaBLOODYCare, has been an abortion. I was so looking forward to getting insurance through ACA. Now I hate it. Hate it with a passion. Hate it probably even more than your common or garden Tea Partyer.

I got whacked a 88% IRS Tax Penalty in April 2015 — IRS saying I paid too little for ObamaBLOODYCare. That was the last bloody straw.

I am not going to do anything about this bleeding letter. Why bother trying to see IF they can reduce my premiums. I will get whacked at bloody tax time.

I can’t wait for Donald Trump to become president just to have ObamaCare repealed.

To be fair a ‘Blue Moon‘ can mean one of three things:

1. Second full moon within the same calendar month.

2. Third full moon during an astronomical season that has four full moons; an astronomical season in this context being the 3-month period between an equinox and a solstice, e.g., 3-months between the March Spring Equinox and the June Summer Solstice.

3. When the moon, due to atmospherical conditions, appears blue.

All three are RARE events. An astronomical season is but three months. So to get 4 full moons does not happen that often. DITTO for two full moons in the same month and ‘red’, ‘orange’, ‘silver’ and ‘gray’ moons are much more common that blue-tinted moons.

So the phrase, ‘Blue Moon’, as I talked about in this post, is also used to mean something that happens rarely.

The last two full moons in a month happened in September 2012. Nearly 3 years ago.

Friday’s July 31, 2015 Blue Moon is the last, for us in EASTERN U.S. till beyond 2020. Yes, that is it for over 5 years. Time zones to the WEST of us will have them in May 2016, May 2018 and October 2020. But not in Eastern U.S. All has to do with the timing of the 2nd full moon.

Third full moon in an astronomical season will happen May 2016, May 2019, August 2021 and August 2024.

Plus, July 31, 2015 is “National Orgasm Day“!

It has to the first time NOD has happened in a Blue Moon. Wow.

August 2015 issue.

“The Last Rites of the Jade Sea” article — page 60.

I, as anybody familiar with this blog will know, have no compunctions about female toplessness.
If anything I have no problems with it, at all, at all.

I resorted to some censorship here because I am not sure
how old these ladies are.
I am not taking any chances!

I am surprised National Geographic was not a bit more careful.

Yes, I am indeed keeping count because NatG, for the longest time, due to some false sense of propriety, stopped printing pictures of topless tribal women — its well known hallmark, for long, in its ‘early days’.

As far as I can see these are #3 & #4 since January 2014 — though I might have missed some, despite my efforts to read each and every issue cover-to-cover. The prior two are at the very top of this post with links.

Have a chuckle. It is good for you.

That 20% uncertainty on my part as to getting a Canon G3X, that I talked about 2 days ago, is in my world a pretty BIG margin of latitude. I am still struggling mightily, within that 20% wiggle-room, as to whether I will be happy with the Canon G3X.

If nobody else will say it I will say it. I struggle with the fact that it is not an attractive camera. Actually it is a pretty ugly looking beast, made worse when you stick on the external, viewfinder. It then looks like something that was really badly cobbled together. It sure does NOT look like a $1,240 top-end camera.

Yes, I readily admit that I like attractive things — hence my Jaguars, my watches, my dogs! I don’t have to go further.

John Keats, the poet, in 1818, said in the opening line of one of his poems: “A thing of beauty is a joy forever”. Fifty years ago, as a boy growing up in Ceylon, that was one of the first English ‘sayings’ I had to learn. It resonated with me, and it often comes to mind. “A thing of beauty is a joy forever”. Well you will be hard pressed to call the Canon G3X a thing of beauty.

Don’t kid yourself. People notice the camera you use. Since I have been using the Canon T3i I can’t tell you the number of people who have asked me whether I was a photographer or commented on the camera. The G3x looks like a 1980s, $12 Kodak box camera. It sure does NOT look like a $1,240 top-end camera. Did I already say that.

This post is for whoever was doing a search on this, as it pertains to New Hampshire, this morning. I am glad you found my original post, which was about the repealing of the adultery law, where I mentioned in passing that New Hampshire, thank ‘somebody’, does not have an “alienation of affection” law. It probably did at some point. Most likely it was the law in most states at one point. Very puritanical. Thou shall not mess with somebody else’s marriage. It is kind of Biblical. Extrapolation of the adultery law.

I remember, growing up in Ceylon, where we, per British law, still had “Breach of Promise” (of matrimony) on the books. So you can see the logic.

It is amazing that “alienation of affection” is still around in some states. As far as I can see, and PLEASE do not take my word on this, check in your own state, the ONLY states that still permit lawyers to file such lawsuits are: North Carolina, Illinois, Mississippi, New Mexico, South Dakota and Utah. I think it is, however, most prevalent in North Carolina. That is where I heard about it — and how and why I heard about it does not warrant discussion here. It was kind of amusing.

To be fair it, like adultery, is an equal-opportunity law, with no gender bias. The affection being alienated can be that of the husband or wife. There have been some hefty settlements in North Carolina.

I can only smile, though I am sure if you live in one of the states that still has this archaic law on the books you probably don’t think it is funny. But then again it is best not to mess with other people’s marriages.

Jonathan Edwards absolutely galvanized a very appreciative crowd of around 230 folk, at Wolfeboro’s Anderson Hall, for ‘Great Waters‘, on Saturday, July 25, 2015. What an exceptional entertainer and performer — and he can sing too. He, at times, had me mesmerized and that takes some doing these days. I had heard, more than once, over the last 10 months, that ‘Jonathan Edwards’ was GOOD, v. good. Well he sure was. I felt very privileged to have been at this concert (and the fact that, as a stagehand, I got to interact with him and his delightful band on stage and backstage was an added bonus). I know that HE was the first act that “Great Waters” booked for 2015 — nearly a year ago. I gather he had played for them 5 years ago and had been a smash hit. Well he was a smash hit all over again. I am a fan. Gather he spent 10 years of his life, his ‘lost decade’, in the Caribbean before moving to Austin (which he did not realize was in Texas). He sure knows a lot of folks and the names he dropped were but a “who’s who” of the music scene over the last 40 years. Not 100% sure whether he actually played with Bob Marley but he implied he played a lot of Marley while he was in the “West Indies” (as we Brits like to call it). Well he did one Marley song. And this dude, with a white goatee, and mainly ‘light’ hair, from Maine (I gather), doing Marley gave me goose bumps! He is good. Did I already say that.

Man, have we lucked out with “Great Waters” this year. “Aztec, Two-Step“, when we still had 10′ of snow on the ground, was brilliant. “Devonsquare“, soon afterwards, with snow still on the ground”, was as good. Then we had the inimitable John Gorka & Cliff Eberhardt. I was pretty sure that they could not be beat in 2015. I, yet again, was wrong and that bothers me none. Jonathan Edwards was a revelation. As with ALL of them, ‘Gorka’, ‘Cliff’, ‘Aztec’, I had never heard of him till “Great Waters”. I think that has to do with me being in Britain in the 1970s and half of 1980. My folk heroes were British: Steeleye SpanLindesfarne in the main — and I would go to multiple concerts, by each, every year.

And then we had a BONUS. Marina Evans from Massachusetts. She did an “Alison Krausseque” 30-minute opening gig for Jonathan (and Deanna and I have met Alison, in NH, in her PJs, and I kid you not). She is good. Very compelling and will make you tap your feet whether you want to or not. She was a revelation. I thought she came with Jonathan. Appears that that was not the case. It was the first time that they had met. So it would appear “Great Waters” arranged this inspired pairing. I am sure she will be back with “Great Waters”, with her own show, in the next few years. She definitely gathered quite a fan base at the concert. Her CDs were flying off the merchandise table.

So that was that. What a night. Jonathan, not heeding his wife’s ‘advice’ to keep it short, played for nearly two hours. So the concert didn’t finish till past 10pm. I would have been happy if he played for another 2 hours. He was that good. So we didn’t get away till about 11 pm though Jonathan’s band, to their credit, took care of all their equipment, and they had a fair amount.

Thank YOU, Mr. Edwards. Thank YOU, Marina (and I won’t call her Miss. Evans since I have a daughter older than her).

Jonathan’s extremely talented and fun band.

Jonathan sings barefoot and has a cute dog off stage.
His multifaceted drummer, who also plays guitar from behind the drums,
plays barefoot too — and MOREOVER plays a MARACA with his foot!
Given that I too get accused of having ‘monkey toes’ in that I can pickup
and use things with my toes, I found this very much to my liking.

When I got an e-mail from Canon on June 19, 2015 informing me of the Canon PowerShot G3X I knew I was going to be facing quite a dilemma. I had more or less convinced myself that I was going to get the new Sony RX10 II. Then the Canon which uses the same OEMed 1″ CMOS 20.2MP sensor from Sony.

My birthday is in September and it had been long assumed by Deanna and Devanee (who already in her mind owns my Canon T3i) that I would treat myself to new camera. I got the refurbished Canon T3i, from Canon, for a bargain $330, for my birthday last year after I was disenchanted with a refurbished Nikon L820 I had treated myself with. The Canon T3i, at that price, was a ‘trial’, to let me get back into the swing of things after nearly 3 decades of not paying much attention to cameras.

I am still drawn to the Sony RX10 II. If nothing else it looks beautiful, what a “$1,000” camera should look like. I do not like the shape of the Canon G3x and I really dislike the external, addon — very ugly — Electronic Viewfinder (EVF), the EVF-DC1. But it has the 600mm equivalent 25x OPTICAL ZOOM. That really appeals to me.

Given that I wanted ‘superzoom’ I then looked at the Nikon P900 with its obscene 2,000mm equivalent 83x Optical Zoom. I would buy the Nikon in a heartbeat IF it had a 1″ CMOS sensor. It does NOT. I do not care what anybody says, and Deanna swears by the picture quality of her Olympus SZ-16 with an EVEN SMALLER sensor. But, I, given that I do have a degree in computer technology, know that you can’t beat the laws of physics. Sensor size will come around to bite you at some point. To me 1″ has to be the bare essential.

So here is my comparison.

I even downloaded the user guide.
From what I see Canon no longer includes a user guide in the box!

I am going to wait a few more weeks BEFORE I buy a camera. I am right now 80% sure it will be the Canon PowerShot G3X because of its 1″ sensor and 25X zoom. But I am going to do some serious research into the digital zoom on the Sony. Yes, digital zoom is not the same as optical. BUT if the image quality is superior in the 200mm range, and the Sony has a MUCH FASTER f/2.8 lens, I might still go with the Sony. What a dilema.

Any thoughts?
