Today, July 8, 2015, is 16 full months!

487 days.

Nothing. Nada. Zilch.

Doesn’t it blow your mind?

The 1st article below states — “Only ONE Conclusion …”

It did NOT crash. It Landed.

The 2nd article speculates on the Northern route it could have taken.

Maldives, which I was the FIRST to suggest,
is even today, 16 months later, still COMING UP!

Mill Hill (Public) School, London, My Ol’ Alma Mater, Gets First Female Headmaster, Mrs Frances King.

From my favorite newspaper, the U.K. “Daily Mail”. Click to access Mrs. King article.

Wow! Plus ça change, plus c’est la même chose (the more things change, the more they stay the same) sure does NOT apply here. First female head — of what used to be, even when I entered, kicking and screaming, in 1969, an all boys school. Yes, in my last year, two years later, they did let in some 6 young ladies, strictly as day scholars. But the boarding school was still all male.

We didn’t even really have any female teachers. Yes, there was a female that taught, just “Use of English”, and she did that on an ad hoc basis in that she was the then Headmaster’s wife, Mrs. Hart. She was American to boot. Savor the irony. The only female teacher at an all boys school teaching “Use of English” was a Yank. A very nice one at that — probably because she was American. She was the first person to encourage me to write. I wonder if she is around. It would give her a kick to see what happened to her unruly student.

The new female head is the Mrs Frances King, who from the quick Googling I did (when I heard the news, via an e-mail) is quite famous for leaving Britain in a huff, for Switzerland, because she was was not happy with the prevailing British attitude to private schooling. Not sure why she is coming back. Is she implying that things have changed. I doubt it.

That she was Headmistress at Roedean is kind of funny. In my short time at Mill Hill, before I was summarily expelled, Roedean epitomized the snooty girl’s boarding schools that we loved to make fun of — along the lines of “OK girls, lights out, candles in …”. What can I say. We were teenagers. I will, however, spare you the sound effects.

That her Bachelor’s is in theology from Oxford is also interesting. Theology? Wow.

Of course the school is not the same as what it was 44 years ago. A female head will certainly be different. I wish all of them the best.

fujixt111I was reading a writeup of the Fujifilm X-T1 in the July 2015 issue of “Outdoor Photographer“, rather appropriately, while we were visiting Acadia National Park last month when I was struck by its atypically low ISO range in ‘standard’ mode. 200-6400. Wow. That is IT in RAW mode. I get better than that on my $330 Canon T3i. Yes, it appears that it can be pushed, just when shooting JPEGs to 100-51200 but that seems a bit of a kludge.
Just a thought. It was something that stopped me in my tracks.

I was, in my mind going “wow, this looks interesting” when BANG. 200-6400. I need as higher an ISO as I can reasonably afford given that I shoot a LOT of concerts, plays and ballets. The current 6400 I have is now really enough because I also do not have any really ‘fast’ lenses and do not use a tripod.

So for now the Fujifilm X-T1 will not be in my top-tier of potentials.

The problems, as I pointed out a few days ago, are with Willow TV.

But, I get Willow via Sling TV. So I have to deal with Sling TV.

I can’t watch most of the cricket matches I want to watch: Bangladesh vs. India series and Sri Lanka vs. Pakistan.

60% of the cricket programs WILL NOT LOAD.

I kid you not. I get SERVER-side errors. Probably a capacity issue on the servers.

The Sling TV reps. are even too dumb to find my account let alone talk about a solution.

So I cancelled the entire damn $10/month Sling TV account.

Yes, there is plenty of cricket, FOR FREE, on ESPN.

Sling TV, when it was DishWorld, was EXCELLENT. Outstanding. Now they suck.

They had a great call center in Montreal, Canada.

Now the reps. can barely speak English!

Do NOT subscribe to Sling TV.

Kids Dentists To Avoid Controversy Now Referring To “Fluoride” Just As A Vitamin.

Click to ENLARGE and read. This, though from another dentist, was basically the same spiel I heard today. No mention of fluoride. Just talk of a vitamin application.

Took both kids, together, to our dentist for their scheduled 6-month cleaning and checkup. As is the new wont the hygienist made a big deal of telling you, and the kids, as to what they will be doing during the visit. I heard twice, given that their were two kids, that they would finish the visit with a “vitamin application”. I was intrigued. I had never heard of that procedure before — “vitamin application”.

Given that I go in with Teischan I got to see what they were doing. At the very end, she peels the cover off a small packet of liquid and start applying the liquid to Teischan’s teeth with a Q-tip. Well that did NOT look like the application of a ‘conventional’ vitamin, say ‘D’ or ‘E’.

So I asked her how the vitamin was going to get ingested by the body through the tooth enamel. She started to blush and stammer. She admitted that it was not a vitamin. To be fair to her IT WAS. Fluoride is a vitamin. So they were NOT lying to us. Just, at best, being ‘cute’ — at worst being deceptive. She admitted that it was a fluoride varnish. In the past they used to be all ga-ga about applying this fluoride finish. They never called it a vitamin. It was always fluoride this and fluoride that.

Now it is a vitamin — and NO mention of fluoride.

This is NOT right.

Parents should be TOLD what it is that they are applying and given the option to OPT out.

I am not sure whether I would have opted out. I am NOT convinced about fluoride. I have better teeth than most with nary a cavity and there was no fluoride when I was growing up.

So a HEADS UP. Ask your dentist what exactly they are putting in YOUR KID’S mouth.
