This is not shaping up to a ‘pretty’ election. There are already, as I had always feared, calls for violent protest. The extremist Buddhist are hell bent on making sure that they get what they want irrespective of rhyme or reason. Having the pope’s visit looming, from large billboard no less, will just incite animosity against the poor Catholics — and I do mean ‘poor’ in the financial sense, i.e., catholics in village settings. This is not Ceylon of 40 years ago and that the current President, a prominent Buddhist, is married to an ardent, lifelong Catholic no longer has nothing to do with it — that was a vestige from the Ceylon I grew up in. So … Over to the pope. He probably should check with his boss. Buddhist or no Buddhist you have to believe that his boss will no the score and can advise the pope, better than anybody down here, as to whether he should go or call it quits.
