Our whole trip to the Sandwich Fair this year (a fair that we go to every year without fail) was all planned around the Roderick Russell show on Sunday. We saw him doing his astounding sword swallowing act two years ago at Sandwich and have been great fans of his ever since — that he had me on stage may have played a part. His show was scheduled to start at 11:20 and we got there just after 11.

We are glad we made a point of going to it. It was quite the show. World class entertainment. As I mentioned in yesterday’s post I am not a stranger to hypnosis though I have steadfastly refused to be hypnotized — for exactly the very same reasons that I never did drugs (though I hung around with some very heavy users). Ever since I was quite young I have kind of known that I like how my brain is and I don’t want anything messing with it (though some will argue that I should quit the wine if I am that concerned).

I wasn’t sure what to expect with Roderick. We know he is a mentalist too and I knew he would somehow meld the two together. To be honest I was worried for him. Wasn’t sure how a hypnosis show would go down at Sandwich — on a Sunday morning. Sword swallowing is one thing, hypnosis a very different ball game. I need not have worried. Roderick Russell excelled. He exceeded all of my expectations for the entertainment quotient. He is GOOD. Very good and he knows it — which is good.

He had the near packed crowd totally mesmerized and entertained. They will be having him back again. Of that there is no doubt or debate. He sure delivered on what he must have promised. He entertained.

Yes, Deanna volunteered. She has had some experience with hypnosis (though without much luck). She wasn’t, however, on stage for long. She is not a good hypnosis candidate.

So there is one key issue that has to be asked given that I am a professional cynic — and Deanna too has questions today. No doubt, no question this was CLASS entertainment. Better than any comedy act — ever. But was it real?

Only Roderick Russell can really answer that.

That said, IF you want to be entertained, go see Roderick Russell. This is his magical Website.

I shot 135 images during the show! Some didn’t come off as well as I would have liked. The stage was backlit by some strong sunshine during the entire show. As is my recent wont I put all these images into YouTube and created 6:42 minute photo montage set to music. The images are in chronological order. So they are as I shot them during the 1 hour show. You should be able to get a feel for what was happening. As ever I got some local color too. The chef is no other than Common Man owner Alex Ray. Don’t pay much heed to the older gentleman taking a nap. Maybe Roderick had hypnotized him at a distance.

cnbctickers

The old CNBC 3 ticker layout as of Monday, October 13, 2014 — Columbus Day. Click to ENLARGE.

That I wake-up to CNBC (on weekdays) has to be well known because I have mentioned it enough times — like here and there. This morning I, as per the schedule, clicked on the bedroom TV around 8:22 am and selected CNBC from the DirecTVfavorites‘ menu — with CNBC at ‘top center’ so I can get to it with one click.

Immediately, even though I wasn’t still fully awake and did NOT have my glasses on I knew that something was not right. I tend to be like that. I put my glasses on. Saw it at once. NO top ticker! Initially thought that it was because it was Columbus Day and some of the markets, e.g., Bonds, were closed. But that did not make sense. The stock market was open as were the European markets. Realized that the buggers had decided to rejig the whole thing.

Waited till 9:30 for the market open. I saw three (3) tickers at the bottom PLUS a ‘bug’, bottom right, with the Dow, S&P and NASDAQ. Aahhh!

To be fair, in the end we all get used to whatever is displayed.

There was nothing intrinsically wrong with the old layout with the MASTER top ticker.

I suspect that as with everything today this has to do with MOBILE! Yes, though we are talking TV more and more people are watching TV, to my amazement and awe, on 5″ screens on their phones. I have never even looked at such a screen and I have never bothered to try and watch CNBC, or for that matter, any other TV show on my 10.2″ Le Pan Pad.

Well I will keep you posted. There is really nothing that good flashing across the tickers these days.

Given that I tend not to pay much heed to this copycat Canadian ‘holiday’ I had not realized till a few minutes ago that the always ‘damn cute‘ Canadians observe (‘celebrate’ seems like a joke) their ‘Thanksgiving‘ when the U.S. is celebrating Columbus Day.

Weird … right? Could NOT have been a coincidence — 2nd Monday of October. They could at least have gone for 1st Friday of October.

I don’t know. These Canadians! I guess the 2nd Monday of October is the LAST day of Fall in the ‘upper Tundra’ (as I call it) and the FIRST day of their 7 month winter.

Well, just think about it.

Something has to tell you that it is NOT cricket.

Yes, I understand that there is something perversely
wrong with ‘celebrating’ Columbus Day,
especially when you are ‘Indian‘ like me,
BUT for us in New Hampshire it is an inescapable day,
a school holiday no less. So we might as well be happy,
not that I am not happy rest of the days of the year.

I had not realized that today, the 2nd Monday of October, was Canada’s Thanksgiving Day. It is not a ‘holiday’ that I can give any credence to. Just seems like an embarrassing copycat holiday. Gordon Lightfoot is Canadian, as are ‘The Brigadoons‘ and the ‘Glengarry Bhoys‘. Because of them I will be kind.

Google has stopped doing Google Doodles for the Canadian Thanksgiving as of 2010. Wow. I wonder if anybody in Canada noticed. They probably didn’t. It is amazing what that cold does to you.

Plus I noticed that the Doodles that Google did for Canada were rather insipid and uninspired. Nothing like what they do for the one-and-only REAL Thanksgiving.

Some of the boring Google Doodles for Canadian Thanksgiving in prior years.

There was NO Columbus Day Google Doodle in 2014.
Actually it would appear that Google has never done one for Columbus Day. Strange?

Is Google trying to say something?

705985book

It, like so many great things British, started with a BOOK.

I grew up in Ceylon (now Sri Lanka), 1953 – 1967, on rich diet of British culture, ethos and literature. I had every single book that a good British boy of the time was supposed to have read — and a few hundred more! I had a lot of books as a kid. ‘Noddy‘ and everything Enid Blyton was my main staple though ‘Paddington’, of course, was right up there. “Paddington” since then has always been dear to me — though I was unable to get any of the four kids to take much interest in him. I guess it is a British thing.

On my first visit to Britain, in August 1976, I did go my train to Paddington Station. It felt familiar because of the “Paddington” books.

We saw the trailer for the “Paddington” 2014 movie when we went to see “The Boxtrolls” on Friday. I knew that I had no choice. We are going to see it. Teischan was impressed. She wants to see it. So it looks like a done deal already.

Check it out. You might become a BELIEVER. “Paddington” is so cute.
