I think the scope of THIS Google Doodle should be worldwide
— not just restricted to India.
Indians are everywhere. They are the modern Chinese.
Indian Independence day always creeps up on me. I know it is in August, but I always forget.
“Freedom at Midnight“, by Dominique Lapierre and Larry Collins,
who also wrote “Is Paris Burning?“, is one of my all time favorite books.
It is all about the independence and unfortunate partitioning.
But, I still forget the day. I only remember February 4, 29148.
IF I ever gave you a copy of this book then you are special.
I have about two copies right now.
Pakistan Independence is today, August 14, one day ahead of India’s. I did NOT know that. Seems strange, but I can also understand. They would not have wanted to share an Independence with India. So the British let them go ahead one day earlier. Very strange.
Today is the start of the 2nd Test Match in the 2014 Sri Lanka v. Pakistan series. Given that I already watched 20 minutes of the highlights while having my late lunch I learned that this is the first time Pakistan has played a Test match during an Independence Day. From the 20 overs or so I saw it didn’t do them much good.

Not good. Not good at all. I am not 100% sure that I can claim to be very surprised. Well, of course, the underage allegation is BAD and if true then he should have the book thrown at him. No excuses. We will NOT tolerate any nonsense when it comes to child abuse by Cliff or anybody else — even if they are Catholic.
Bloody Jimmy Savile was BAD ENOUGH. That was enough.
I have never had any misconceptions about Cliff’s orientation. It was pretty obvious to me. But being gay does not mean that it has to involve boys under 16. In Britain it was ALWAYS about ‘consenting ADULTS’.
Of course given my age and my British background I had no choice but to be a Cliff Richard’s fan. I like his music. But, my main ‘connection’ to Cliff has been with people saying I look like him — despite our 12 year difference in age. I guess I must look old. This has been going on for years. I used to get asked on planes, by girls, whether I was Cliff! I then used to have a friend who use to belittle my little, if any, success with the women, with: ‘It doesn’t bloody count. It is so easy for you. You look like bloody Cliff Richard’. So, I can’t ever think of Cliff without remembering that I was supposed to look like him. I will confess, when I saw my picture from July of this year, with Gordon Lightfoot … it did cross my mind ‘Geee … I do look like Cliff‘!
This Week’s Web ‘Space’ Problems, Highlighted By eBay Crashes, Will Likely Get Worse UNLESS We Fix Pricing.
by Anura Guruge
As somebody who made a living, a fairly comfortable one at that, for three decades working on large networks, I have been, for a long time concerned, very concerned, that we will start to run into major bandwidth issues on the Web UNLESS we in someway have the gumption to come up with a USAGE-related pricing scheme. No, this is NOT about ‘Net Neutrality‘ per se. It is more fundamental than that. Internet pricing is not, bar those that have capped wireless plans, usage-based. To make it easier to follow lets take two houses, side by side, where both houses get the same cable-based Internet access for the same price — lets say $35/month. One house might have four teenagers while the other house has no kids, just a middle-aged working couple. Well as you might be able to work out the house with the teenagers probably has considerably more Web usage than the one without kids. The same would probably be true of the electric usage of the two houses: the house with the kids probably uses more electric than the house next door. But here is the kicker — their electric bills will be different, while they still both pay the FLAT, $35/month for Internet usage.
We, as I have talked about a few times before, have two 15Mbps fiber connections to the house because the 15Mbps I could get with a single TDS line, in this rural neck of the world, wasn’t enough. Though we have 30Mbps to the house (and 7+Mbps upload bandwidth) we are, in the scheme of things, not heavy Internet users! We do very little streaming, Voice-over-IP (VoIP) or video downloading. So Internet usage is NOT the same, by any stretch, as the amount of bandwidth you pay for.
That Internet pricing is not equitable has always bothered me. I used to TRY and get ‘kids’, i.e., my students at SNHU, to understand this. They would have degrees in Computer Science and still never have thought about HOW the Internet is funded and whether the ‘funding’ was equitable. So I would always get them to think about it by including a question about it in their exams. See below.
Unless we move towards some kind of usage-related pricing we will start running into bandwidth issues. I am not concerned about storage limitations. Storage is easy to fix. Just a matter of money. Bandwidth is harder to fix. More expensive too — if you are going to do it right. So ‘space’ is more in the network rather than on what is connected to the network.
Something YOU can do to help. I spent a decade telling this to people in my seminars. When you reply to an e-mail DELETE as much of the original content that was already there as you can. I typically delete all of it. There is NO NEED to just send back what was already in the e-mail unless a bit of it is required to provide context. You are just WASTING precious network bandwidth. Each character transmitted eats up bandwidth! I worry about Internet bandwidth every day.
Gavin Hope Performing In Wolfeboro, N.H. On Friday NOT The Same One Convicted For Swallowing A Live Goldfish (I Hope).

I had no idea who ‘Gavin Hope‘ was — this Friday’s, i.e., August 15, 2014, “Great Waters” show in Wolfeboro, New Hampshire. So I did what you would expect me to do, I Googled ‘Gavin Hope‘ hoping to find out. The search results that came up showed a guy with a goldfish … Given that I had no idea what he looked like, I assumed that the goldfish was part of his act and it crossed my mind how that would come across in rather sedate Wolfeboro — the ‘Oldest Summer Resort in the U.S.‘ Lets face it, Wolfeboro, as far as I know doesn’t even have a sushi bar (let alone a McDonald’s).
Then I found this story, from the U.K., in the ‘Daily Mirror‘. So, I am thinking that he ran into trouble while visiting the U.K. Yes, I had never heard of ‘NekNominate‘.
I have to confess I had mixed feelings about this goldfish swallowing. As must be abundantly clear to anybody who reads this blog I am deathly averse to any form of animal cruelty (other than to snakes). I even have problems flushing dead goldfish down the toilet — and sometimes to Deanna’s chagrin I refuse to put a dying goldfish out of its misery! I always let it have all the time it needs even if it is swimming upside down. I can’t kill a fish. And NO, I have never fished! I can’t even descale or gut a caught fish — much to the amusement of the local fisherman. And I refuse to boil lobsters at home! Yes, I am strange. But, at the same time I am not sure that I can honestly oppose somebody swallowing a live goldfish. I would never do it, BUT I eat fish, sushi and meat. I have eaten swan (by mistake in Thailand thinking it was duck) and reindeer (by choice in Sweden). I used to eat chevelle, with ‘relish’, in Paris. So, given that I am not a vegetarian I have never felt that I have a right to tell other people anything about killing animals for food. So my point is pretty basic. We kill fish to eat. Given that is it such a big deal if somebody swallows a live fish. I don’t think it is right, but I would feel very hypocritical to call it a crime. That is my dilema.
Anywho, as far as I can tell the goldfish swallowing Gavin Hope is not the one that is scheduled to be performing at the “Inn on Main” at 7:30 p.m. tomorrow. I did not volunteer to volunteer at this event. Well, I had never heard of him and I wanted others to have a chance volunteering. As far as I know we are done volunteering for this year for “Great Waters”. But, there is always the chance that I might get called in and short notice. So the person shown below, I hope is the right, ‘Gavin Hope’.
