Some of the above links or a quick search of this blog for ‘prayer’ will show, conclusively, that I do not believe in prayer.

How can I? Pope Benedict XVI (#266) and all the U.S. Catholic prelates, in November 2012, PRAYED for Obama to lose. Obama WON. I wrote a post about it: “They Prayed, He WON …”.

Though I grew up in a household that fervently believed in the power of prayer I soon gave up on prayer as I became an adult. I just can’t rationalize the workings of prayer, irrespective of religion, and I chose, as is my right, only to believe in things that make sense to me. When I hear that an adult has spent 4 hours in prayer, it genuinely makes me doubt his rationality. I will never tell anyone NOT to pray and I regularly get e-mails, mainly from Catholics, that they are praying for me — some praying that I will come to believe in prayer — I personally am beyond skeptical about prayer.

A young, very devout Catholic, who was very impressed with my books on popes asked me what I prayed for. He was speechless when I told him I do not pray. At 23 he could NOT imagine an adult who did not pray.

Well, I don’t pray. Haven’t for 40 years or more.

But, IF the pope can convince me that HIS PRAYERS, and he does have an unfair advantage over everybody else, in that he is the OFFICIAL, anointed Vicar of Christ on Earth — i.e., Christ’s representative on Earth — I might be willing to rethink my abject aversion to everything associated with prayer.

Well the last pope failed when it came to Obama, but he was German. And lets NOT forget that in WW II both sides prayed to God, to the same God and only one side won and another group got rather badly treated. I guess they didn’t know how to pray properly.

So, Papa Francis, though as a Brit we are not too fond of Argentina (and you should have seen me the night we beat you in the Falklands War), PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE pray for Argentina to do well in the World Cup.

You saying you are not going to pray is BOGUS. You are just worried that your prayers will go unanswered as was the case in November 2012 and I assume the Falklands War.

You are Christ’s Vicar. Christ should heed your prayers. Please pray. Prove that prayers work and that Obama’s victory was meant to be.

Thank YOU, Pope.

Pope Francis’ Claim Of Global Economic Collapse Is Inflammatory, Irresponsible, Inane And Above All INSANE.

His heart, most of the time, seems to be in the right place BUT he has to stop making totally stupid remarks that make him appear insane.

This is the guy who did claim that Rugby is NOT violent. He has been making all these meaningless, “just happy thrash talk” remarks about divorced Catholics being able to get communion (officially), clerical celibacy and gays. These are just his off-the-cuff PERSONAL musings — as you can very clearly see from what happened when he talked about divorced Catholics ‘being readmitted to the fold’ so to speak. [See link above]. The Vatican walked back that statement!

Popes most definitely are NOT infallible. Their infallibility is restricted to when they make specific, pre-flagged statements about Christian doctrine (or dogma) in a very formal official setting (referred to as them speaking from their ‘seat’).

This pope, who still likes to wear a set of $50,000 gold pallium pins, loves to talk about the horrors of the world economy and predict doom-and-gloom when it comes to the world economy.

Pope Francis, the ONLY way we will see a Global Economic Collapse, in the next 5 years is IF YOUR Vatican Bank has been up to MORE illegal machinations than what we can even imagine. Unless the Vatican Bank has flooded the world economy with bogus paper and POSSIBLY forged, worthless currency, I for one cannot see any real major issues with the global economy — and unlike the pope, I spend a fair amount of time following the world markets and economy.

So, Pope Francis, stop making a fool of yourself. I know you don’t care BUT I, even if I am not a Catholic, have some respect for the ancient, the oldest continuously maintained OFFICE of the papacy. Don’t make a mockery of the papacy.

I actually agree with the pope that much more should be done for the youth of the world in terms of job and economic opportunity. But, don’t confuse that with global economic collapse. Non sequitur.

I also liked what he had to say about breaking up nations — with reference to the Scottish independence referendum coming up in the U.K. in September. That showed thought and reflection.

So, PLEASE. Stop making silly statements. The world economy is fine for now, thank you. Compared to what we weathered 2008 to 2010 this is peachy. Thank you.

If you put aside, as you must, the Remembrance DayRed Poppy” and the cleverly designed Eicon Aviva Web-to-host products (and I have to say that), Gordon Lightfoot has to be, indubitably, the BEST thing that has ever come out of Canada alongside Cirque Du Soleil (of course) and Cirque Alfonse — the ‘Brigadoons and the ‘Glengarry Bhoys‘ coming next. We won’t even talk about the benighted “Northern Telecom” (NT) and everything associated with them (including the pension they stole from me). So that is it … right. Can’t think of anything else of note from Canada other than rhetoric and though I consume a mid-size pig every few days, I have never been much on bacon.

I have liked Gordon since his heyday in the early 1970s. He was BIG in the U.K. probably because of the Commonwealth connection. I used to have nearly all of records. Not sure whether I kept any of the vinyls. I will have to look.

I have seen him live once before. Long time ago. In 1980 in Phoenix Arizona. I think it was in Tempe or Mesa. It was an outdoor amphitheatre. Think Arizona in June or July. Weather was not an issue. What I remember most is all the planes, small private planes, flying about overhead. At least one carried a lighted sign. A billboard in the sky. Like everything you do in Arizona it was a lot of fun. But that was a long time ago. 34 years ago.

Well it looks like I might get to see Gordon Lightfoot again. Maybe, with luck, maybe even meet him.

Devanee, after her exploits with “Clearlakes Chorale” over the last 2 years, is going to be signing with the “Great Waters Festival Chorus” for their “Evening of Broadway” performance on July 19, 2014. As has Clearlakes, always, “Great Waters” is being very kind to Devanee. She was given a ‘scholarship’ to cover all her costs. So we were very happy and thankful. The very kind friend from Clearlakes who is also involved with Great Waters that made this all possible for Devanee also suggested that we should volunteer. That was not a problem. We like to volunteer and I believe in volunteering. We always help out with Clearlakes. These days I do the house lights (the only lights we have) and the temperature. So we all, bar Teischan who is too young, volunteered. We have got a ‘ton’ of assignments. I, given my supposed ‘fitness’, am a stagehand at a number of the concerts including the Gordon Lightfoot concert. That is supposed to be the most arduous of the volunteer shifts. I am supposed to be there, for each concert, from 1 pm till ~10:30 pm (with a one hour break around 5 pm). I guess we help setup the sound and lights. I don’t know. I have yet to be put to the test. IF I end up as a stagehand, as I am now supposed to be, at the July 11 concert, the chances are fairly good that I should see Gordon. That would be nice.

I admire him. I will keep you posted.

We attended the Great Waters volunteer orientation meeting at the Wolfeboro “Inn on Main” yesterday afternoon. That was fun. We got our handbook and badges. That is why we couldn’t make it to the Laconia Airport Open House. Bit bummed about that because we had so much fun last year and met so many great people — dear Ray Burton among them.

They said that there were still SOME tickets available for Gordon Lightfoot. So IF you want to see him get cracking. Clicking here will take you to the buy tickets page.

Cheers.

TP-Link TL-WA850RE Wi-Fi Range Extender Sure Appears To Be Much Superior To Flaccid Linksys (Belkin) RE2000 & Spluttering RE1000.

I have now been using, with daily increasing glee, a TP-Link TL-WA850RE 300Mbps Universal Wi-Fi Range Extender for 9 days [since Friday, June 6, 2015]. So far, so good. So very good. I am scared of jinxing myself! This $30 rather cute looking Range Extender sure seems much, much better than the infuriating Linksys (Belkin) RE2000 & RE1000 equivalents.

To be honest the TP-Link TLWA850RE seems too good to be true!

So far it has worked like a champ. It doesn’t get too hot unlike the all black Linksys RE2000 that used to ‘glow white’ because it got so hot. [Actually that was part of the reason I returned it and insisted on getting my money back. It ran way too hot for what it was.] It was a breeze to set up. We (Deanna helped me by pressing the button on the router side) set it up using “Wi-Fi Protected Setup” (WPS). Sure did not take 2 minutes to sync up — as is the expectations set for WPS. It was much faster. The whole setup from the time I took the TL-WA850RE out of its little box and had ‘Wi-Hi’ bars showing on its pleasingly blue front LEDs was definitely less than 5 minutes. It came with a mini-DVD but I didn’t use it.

After setting it up close to the router as they all insist, I unplugged it and moved it to where I had previously deployed the Linksys Range Extenders. 4-story house. Wi-Fi router is on the 4th floor. What I really need the Range Extender is for a Canadian ‘set-top’ box that allows me to watch cricket on our ‘large’ 47″ TV. I am 98% sure that the ‘set-top’ box has a c. 1998 802.11 a/b chipset. Definitely cannot be ‘n’. We use 802.11 n laptops and pads all over the house with impunity and good speeds. Without a Range Extender this ‘set-top’ box is dead in the water. The TV and the ‘set-top’ box is on the 1st (ground) floor. I use the Range Extender, in a hallway, on the 2nd floor. So that is where I put the TP-Link TL-WA850RE.

To my great relief I got the 3-bar Wi-Fi signal. This, per TP-Link, is the minimum recommended. Ever so often the 3-bars flicker and I end up with 2-bars — but it seems to go back to 3. So far, as I keep on saying (like a good luck mantra), so good. The aesthetically appealing TLWA850RE is easily visible to me when I am in the kitchen getting my coffee, tea, hot dogs (and I eat a LOT of hot dogs a day) and red wine. I have got into the habit of glancing over to check the bars. 99% of the time I see 3. So I am happy. So far, so good. Have I said that before.

I have, despite my passing familiarity with this industry, never heard of TP-Link. Appears that they are a Chinese company and growing like crazy. They seem to be doing very well on Amazon. The TLWA850RE is #1 in Amazon for ‘Repeaters’ and ‘Wireless Access Points’! Wow. D-Link, Netgear, Linksys etc. must be somewhat worried assuming that these companies now have any management that cares.

TP-Link claims to have 24×7 phone support. I have not tried that. I did use their e-mail support. I did get a decent response overnight. I wanted to know whether I can and should use multiple repeaters. At $30 a pop, even I despite my acute lack of funds, can afford to buy two or three — given I paid “$90” for one Linksys RE2000. So my logic was to put a TP-Link Range Extender on each floor (other than the 4th) — rather than just having one on the 2nd floor. I thought of it as using Range Extenders in tandem. Each extender boosting the signal and propagating it to the next. Much to my surprise they advised me against it — actually it was stronger than that. They told me NOT to even think about it. Made me feel like I had had impure thoughts about Wi-Fi!

They told me to use this.

I am somewhat au fait with LAN-over-your-powerlines extenders. DISH had given me one, which I rarely used, 4 years ago. This one by TP-Link, AV500, appears to be best of all worlds. Extends the LAN and then gives you Wi-Fi and a 500Mbps Ethernet port at the other end. Yes, I can use it. At ‘$60’ from Amazon it is even in my price range. Yes, I will be getting one of these soon. I plan to be getting one or more additional ‘set-top’ boxes in the future. Possibly a Roku now that you can get cricket on it. There is a $300/year box that gives me ALL the U.K. TV channels. That seems to be a given in my future. All these “set-top” boxes have the latest in 802.11 n chipsets. So they might not be as dependent on a Range Extender as my current box. But I, as an ex-networking guru, work on the adage that: “You can never be too rich, too thin, have too much sex or bandwidth”. The only thing I am debating — should I get a third, yes third, broadband connection to the house! Right now we have two separate TDS fiber lines each delivering (upwards) of 15Mbps. To me that is just about bearable. What I am mulling over is to get a third-line and a load-balancing WAN aggregator. To my delight TP-Link has one. Fate! Not too bad on the price front either. “$105” from Amazon. So IF I get a 25Mbps cable connection from Metrocast (to spread my risk) I could have 55Mbps aggregated and at least 7Mbps uploads. Yep, in my brain … I will keep you posted.

But for now. TP-Link — SO FAR, SO GOOD.

Damn sight better than Linksys. Buy them, refurbished from Amazon — knowing that Amazon will take good care of you.

Hope this helps.
