Ran into this issue yesterday, and it really just made me smile.

You can no longer enter ‘various’ into the ‘Date Acquired’ field!

As those of you who know this stuff will appreciate ‘various’
is a perfectly valid entry for this field.

Brokerage statements actually say ‘various’.

But, whoever was writing the code for this year’s, i.e., 2013 taxes, ‘Free Fillable Forms’,
didn’t know that.

So this year INSISTS that you type in a mm/dd/yyyy into that field.

After messing around for a few minutes I gave up. I just left it blank.
It doesn’t object to that.
I am sure the IRS will work out why the field is blank. So I am not worried.

Here is my 2012 return. I used various in various places, as I had to.

I happened to see the cryptic, provocative message about the Massachusetts High Court ‘upskirt‘ ruling, yesterday morning, at 9 am, on the CNN ticker while watching the news. The ticker message was a teaser. It just did not make any sense to me. How could ‘upskirting’ ever be considered legal? So, I had no choice but to file it away in my mental ‘to do list’ as something to Google. Yesterday was busy, as most Thursday’s tend to be since it is ‘Clearlakes Chorale’ rehearsal night and I need to get Devanee there by 6:59 pm. So that cuts into my work day. Plus yesterday the “Pope John XXIII: 101 Facts & Trivia” book became available in paperback. [I still haven’t done everything I need to do about that launch.] Anyway, this morning around 12:20 am (on my 3rd shift), I did manage to find 6 minutes to check out what this was all about.

Wow. The ruling, per the extant MA laws makes sense! The crux here were that the women were (theoretically) ‘fully’ clothed and were in a public place — moreover, a public place, i.e., a (MBTA) rail service where they should KNOW that there are, if nothing else, security cameras in use! That last part was a kicker — and it played a role. So not only were they in a public place where they had little or no right to privacy, they were in a public place where cameras were taking pictures of them whether they liked it or not. Then it appears that in such a setting, if they are clothed, then it is not illegal — though that is now about to change.

I do have a question. What would have happened if some of the ladies were being a bit ‘daring’. Then the fully clothed argument would go out of the window.

Well, with luck all of this is history since they passed news laws at once. Bravo. Wonder what the laws are in the other states.

I have to say, though, that this was indeed an eye opener!

Right now Amazon is selling it at a $1.29 discount!

This is all part of the Amazon magic. Actually they now have a new algorithm that dynamically changes the price to promote sales. Amazon can do this really well with books like this — which are PUBLISHED through THEIR CreateSpace program. They know their costs. It is a wonderful, soup-to-nuts program — which is why I now do everything exclusively through Amazon — and ITS CreateSpace and Kindle.

So just a heads up for those that have already asked me when the paperback will be available. It is available now.

The goal always was to get it done in time for the canonization. Whew! Made it. I have to stop writing books with HARD deadlines. Last year it was Comet ISON with the November 28 perihelion. I wanted all four books, in print form, ready well ahead of that deadline. With this book it was April 27. No deadlines, other than what I set myself, for the next two book. That is a relief.

IRS Form 8949 For 2013, Now On An Exception Basis, Just As I Had Suggested To The IRS Last Year.

8949post

It is kind of scary, though very gratifying, when you suddenly realize that the
IRS has paid heed to a suggestion you made
through their advocacy program!

I had no expectations and the advocacy program tells you upfront that
nobody will discuss
the suggestions you make.
Other than your IP address it is also totally anonymous

in that they don’t ask you for name, e-mail or Social Security.
I was a bit bummed by this because I was under the belief that there were
monetary rewards for ‘reduction of paperwork’ proposals.
From what I see that only applies to Federal Workers!

But, that 8949, as of this year (i.e., tax year 2013), can be completed
on an exception basis, EXACTLY as I envisaged,
albeit for Boxes ‘A’ & ‘D’ only,
is WONDERFUL.
That it is only these two boxes makes sense, per my
original suggestions, these are the ones that are
reported to the IRS.

Thank YOU, IRS.

That said, since I tend to do my taxes kind of on auto-pilot basically following what I had done the year before, I was 60% done filling in Box ‘A’, from my Excel spreadsheet, when I happened to see the ‘you may aggregate’ instructions! No harm done. The real work is creating my Excel Spreadsheet that mimics the 8949. I wouldn’t forgo that step since it provides me with a foolproof method to make sure that all the numbers I report are 100% kosher. Since I have to deal with multiple brokerage statements, having the Spreadsheet guarantees that I haven’t missed anything among the many pages of paperwork — though I use online PDFs of the brokerage forms in parallel to the ones they mail me.

So I just finished completing ‘A’ and ‘D’ anyway. Since it is all electronic I am not really wasting too much paper. PLUS, I think, I could be wrong, that FFF (Free Fillable Forms) might have got its knickers in a twist IF I didn’t file a 8949. It does that. That is OK. Part of its charm.

So a great heads up that I
am delighted to share with YOU!
