George Pell is no saint. If anything he has been embroiled in more controversies than most of the other living cardinals. He has also been implicated, quite badly, in the criminal clergy sex abuse crime spree. So for the pope to appoint him as the new economic/financial czar is TELLING. Though he apologized, as he had to, his statements about the Jews was quite incredible — given that he must know (assuming he has read the Bible) that Jesus was born a Jew, lived as a devout Jew and died a proud and committed Jew. I actually think that this pope, who like most fellow Jesuits has a personality that ‘runs deep’, is sending a message with this appointment. This pope, as I have been saying all along for the last six months, is light, joy and inclusiveness on the outside (where talk is cheap and means nothing more than media soundbites) while still very conservative, calculating and provocative on the inside. This was one of those provocative moves. I think we all know that there are a lot of Jews in very high places in the financial world. I still remember being told when I came over here in 1986 (for the 2nd time around) that (the then) stock, bond and mutual fund tables in the Wall Street Journal were printed ‘back-to-front’ so to speak was to make them easier for the Jewish readers who were used to reading ‘right-to-left’. Even if that wasn’t 100% true to the gist of the matter is still valid. A lot of people who read the WSJ are Jewish. So this is definitely putting the cat among the pigeons. It will be interesting to see how this pans out. Watch this space. I will keep an eye on Pell.
