I don’t want any grief about my style or technique. Unless you are 60 or over you shouldn’t even think about commenting. My back is fine — THANK YOU. Probably from all the shoveling I do every winter and have done for twenty years (though not as much as I have been doing in the last 12 or 13 years).

I pick my shovels with the same care that I used to with my skis and cricket bats. I go through at least three shovels a winter. I invariably use these $9 red-handled shovels from Home Depot. I buy one or two every time I see them. Yes, of course, I have a stash. The balance of the shovel is crucial. Just as with a cricket bat you want to be able to pick it up and swing it with the minimum of effort. unlike cricket bats though, heavy shovels are counter-productive. The weight should come from the snow, not the shovel. Hence my preference for these very light shovels. Yes, of course, they break quicker — but at $9 a pop they are disposable.

All that cut bank of snow you see behind me, around the mailbox — I cleared that in about 30 minutes. This is why it cracks me up when I see folks lugging around heavy snow-blowers. For me it is just as quick to hand shovel.

Enjoy.

Yes, of course, we have had instances of ex-popes in the past BUT none of them got the ‘royal’ deference that ex-pope Ratzinger is being afforded. [The title that he assumed ‘Pope Emeritus Benedict XVI‘ is incorrect and as such invalid. That is why I refuse to use it. ‘Benedict XVI‘, categorically and canonically, was his PAPAL NAME. When he ceased to be pope he lost that name.]

I am sure this is a first. Two popes at a cardinal creating consistory.

Historic. So please take note.

I have been too busy trying to finish my ‘Pope John XXIII‘ book to pay too much attention to this cardinal creating consistory that took place today.

I just had a quick glance at the titles and deaconries assigned to the 19 created (since that only gets known after the consistory) — since it is hard to break old habits. That the pope created 2 new titles [i.e., promote Roman churches so that they can be assigned to a cardinal] was interesting but not that unusual. Starting with John XXIII the popes have been creating titles and deaconries like crazy to accommodate the explosive growth in the size of the College of Cardinals.

I was, from day one when it was announced, delighted that he was going to be created. From all that I can see he is a good man. He did yeoman service to John XXIII — even prior to him becoming pope. He was like a son to the pope. So this was good.

As far as I can tell he is the oldest, at 98, to have been created in the last 200 years — if not more.

Given his age I had just assumed be would be created a cardinal deacon as opposed to a priest — though to be fair he is a titular archbishop [i.e., by name only], he having been given John XXIII [i.e., Cardinal Roncalli’s] old archbishopric in 1971. And yes, as an archbishop he is entitled to be a cardinal priest.

As it happens, the other two over-80 designates, Fernando Sebastián Aguilar, C.M.F., Archbishop Emeritus of Pamplona y Tudela [Spain] & Kelvin Edward Felix, Archbishop Emeritus of Castries, Saint Lucia [Antilles];, were also created cardinal priests given his archbishop credentials (though they are both retired, with the nominal retirement age for an archbishop, subject to the pope’s will, being 75).

Just wanted to document this — in case I forgot in time!

As with ‘Clearlakes Chorale‘ we are involved with
‘Northeastern Ballet Theatre’ (NBT) because
one of the kids, in this case
Teischan, performs with them.
It is a good cause. They do a good program
and all kids are given a chance
irrespective of training and finances.

So if you can PLEASE help. Click on image to see the options for contributing.

Thank YOU.
