To say that we are HUGE Richard Leonard
would be an understatement.

We got to know Richard as this very caring, very able, very professional pharmacist at Alton Hannaford. He is so thoughtful and helpful and I know that there are legions of other folks that frequent that pharmacy that will second that.

He is the Cat’s Whiskers. Salt of the Earth.

I happened to meet him at Saad’s reception yesterday evening. Richard is a Library Trustees. That he makes time to attend community events such as that, despite his crazy work schedule, is but a small measure of this great man with a large heart and a good head on his sturdy shoulders. It made my day — though I was already pumped that Saad was getting some well earned recognition.

Though he hasn’t officially announced his run, Richard, kind as ever, gave me permission to publish this news here. Thanks Richard.

This is great news. Well we need to rally around Richard. If you visit Hannaford’s Alton PLEASE stop by and say ‘hello‘ to Richard.

I went browsing through Google’s way-under-par Newspaper archive
trying to find Newspaper stories from the day.

Wasn’t easy, though I learned something momentous:
Mahatma Gandhi’s funeral took place on February 3, 1948
the day before Ceylon Independence!

I found three stories so far.

I am in more shock. This is a newspaper from Iowa!

Can you see an Iowan paper carrying any story about Sri Lanka today?

I did NOT know this!

To be honest, though I, of course, knew of the tragic assassination (and I have watched the movie at least thrice) I would not have been able to tell you exactly WHEN that pivotal event happened. It was January 30, 1948. I knew it was shortly after Indian independence in August 1947.

Today, for the heck of it, I was browsing through Google’s very disappointing (in that it is slapshot and inadequate) Newspaper Archive looking for stories of Ceylon’s independence when I saw the headlines and picture (below) in an Indian Newspaper from Madras. I was shocked. I had no idea.

Wow. I wonder how many Sri Lankans know this. The irony. Ceylon gets Independence 4 days after the Mahatma is assassinated. Wow.

I will in future never think of Ceylon Independence
WITHOUT connecting it with the Mahatma’s untimely passing.

Yes, I admire him greatly and think of his sayings, often, especially about respecting the labors of others.

I am no stranger to this delightful, very talented, hugely committed group.

Though I only, alas, found out about these MONTHLY GATHERINGS, by chance, on Thursday, I have seen them at the Highland Games given what was our habitual, year-in, year-out attendance.

It appears that Strathspey & Reel to my delight shares a member (who, to my surprise I actually don’t know personally, though I know most of the others) with Clearlakes Chorale. This was serendipity! Of late, rather than sit through all 2.5 hours of Clearlakes Chorale I have been going for a walk, in the dark, in Wolfeboro (in lieu of my ‘daily’ run). So I would miss some of the announcements. This Thursday, given the cold I decided to go running around 11am when the temp. was ~10ºF. 10ºF meets the ‘running’ criteria for I and the the dogs. It has to be at least 5ºF. So I didn’t go for my night perambulations — Wolfeboro absolutely magical at night. (Having lived on dirt roads for 18 years of my 28 years in N.H., the dark doesn’t bother me). So, I got to hear the announcements. That I hadn’t nodded off, helped too. My ears pricked up. We are all gluttons for Scottish music. Plus, this is the Robert Burns’ birthday weekend. As soon as I got home from Clearlakes I checked the Web. Bingo. He was right. Gathering this Sunday.

Not sure we can make it. Teischan is leaving as I write for the ‘Snow White’ auditions. She will be gone for a few hours. She likes her weekends so might want to stay at home Sunday to make up for being gone for that long today.

But, I wanted to share this with you.

We in the Concord area have lucked out. Don’t forget the FREE ‘Red Hot Chilli Pipers‘ concert at the Capitol Center for the Arts.

I had also never heard of the ‘Concord Community Music School‘ where the group meets. That looks like quite a place too. Wow.

Happy Robert Burns Birthday.

Strathspey and Reel Society of New Hampshire performing in Portsmouth in 2012. This is a haunting set. If you are pressed for time just check it out around the 1:05 mark. That is Scottish, non-bagpipe, at its sweetest. Click to access the YouTube video.
