rosskingbrundomecoveraFilippo Brunelleschi, who came up with the design for Florence Cathedral’s awesomely stupendous dome in the 15th century, is one of my all time favorite heroes. As some contend he heralded the magnificent, destiny-changing Italian Renaissance.

I had read Ross King’s excellent ‘Brunelleschi’s Dome‘ quite a few years ago — more or less as soon as I had finished reading his compelling and educational ‘Michelangelo and the Pope’s Ceiling‘. So, as far as I could tell, I didn’t really learn anything too profound by this disappointingly terse article — though it was very beautifully crafted. I admired the skill and effort that had gone into its creation.

Feudpbk210-210What National Geographic though adds is the graphics and side-bar illustration. They are peerless. Deanna hasn’t read it as yet so I haven’t taken out the poster. I can’t, however, wait to do so and spread it out on the floor and study it in more detail. It is worth getting the issue just for the poster. I will save the poster and stick it in one of my Brunelleschi books. I also happen to have this (>>) book. It is also about Brunelleschi’s Dome but viewed in terms of the feud with his competitor and co-architect Ghibrti. Maybe this is the impetus to start reading that as soon as I finish the 1,200 page (if not longer) ‘Texas‘ by James Michener.

As far as I can tell there are no boobs on display in this month’s issue. I could be wrong. I haven’t looked through each page. There is, however, a very disturbing picture of a few hundred, nearly naked, very brown Indians, with the scrawniest asses imaginable walking in file — some involved in some ‘unnatural’ activities. I will take topless any day of the week over that.
