I knew Christopher Boothby, in passing, way, way back when I used to bum around in the Meredith Republican ‘inner circle’. I still remember being introduced to him, and it was probably 1998 or 1999, at a gala, very select Meredith Spring ‘rose garden party’ as ‘ … and he is the future of our Republican party’. I also had a couple of rather superficial and in general unsatisfactory dealings with him when he was his overbearing self at Lakes Region General Hospital (LRGH). I also knew Ray though I am sure he only knew me: “as that ‘darkie‘ that I see at strange places … but always comes and talks to me”. This post is more about my feelings about Ray, who I think of as a superlative, exemplary human being (despite some of his foibles) than about Bootby per se. To be fair Boothby in his self-serving piece in the Laconia Daily Sun does say, to his credit, that ‘Nobody can replicate Ray’. On that I will agree 100% with Boothby, probably the only thing we can agree upon. As far as I can see, and I am no expert on this and I can be wrong, there are ONLY two things that Ray and Boothby have in common: they are both men (as far as I can tell) and they both claim to be Republicans. Beyond that I cannot see or find any similarities.
In today’s piece Boothby claims that Ray was his mentor. That made me chuckle. Pity that Ray isn’t around for us to ask him. But, given his undisguised ambition I am sure that Boothby would have done anything to ingratiate himself with the ‘great man’ of N.H. politics. Boothby, also in this piece, talks about “Ray’s charm”. Spot on. That indeed was Ray’s undisputed gift. Now it very well could be that Boothby, a good Republican, cringed each and every time he saw me, but when I think of Boothby all that comes to mind is that he would do well to carry a few tubes of maximum strength ‘Preparation H’ in his pockets.
But, to be fair to Boothby, I am as far removed from his base as he would want anybody to be. So everything I say will be considered a positive by his base. I am glad. Lets face it, Ray was a ol’ fashioned Reagan Republican. Boothby is a new fangled Ted Cruz agitator.
The way I see how the two stack up, but I could be wrong … and it all depends on your viewpoint and perspective.
I have no animosity towards Boothby and wish him well in his race. I get a feeling that he could provide us with a few laughs in Concord.
