I like this pope. I said that from day. Plus, unlike all the other ‘Johnny come latelies‘ I had him, in print, in my ‘Next Pope 2011‘ book, in 2010 as a papabili. So, don’t even think about trying to give me any grief about going after this pope.

I happened to see, yesterday, on TV, the Pope, in Brazil, talking about the evils of money, wearing a pallium. I immediately checked to see what kinds of pins he was wearing. They looked like gold but I wasn’t going to jump to conclusions. I wanted to be sure. So this morning I went checking for photographs. He is using gold pallium pins. They could actually be those that his extremely vain predecessor, the noted dandy, had designed with jewel heads.

I am nothing but consistent when it comes to this issue of pope’s dripping gold (like … (and you can substitute your favorite euphemism)).

This is from Christmas day 2011 — and look at the pins.

For those of you who are not familiar with palliums and the 5 pins, let me tell you about the irony of using gold pins — a fashion started by the vainglorious German pope.

The 5 pins are supposed to represent the five rusted nails used to crucify Jesus on the cross!

With all due respect and all humility that I can muster, there is nothing that this pope can tell me or teach me about charity. I know charity from both sides of the divide.

Wearing unnecessary gold ornaments and then getting on your high horse to talk about the evils of money does not impress me.

Yes, it is possible that this pope was waylaid with these pins, i.e., he was told, at the last minute, that that as all they had. But, I don’t buy that. If this pope was genuine he could have used 5 safety pins and pocketed the five gold pins. Then he should have called out, during Mass, for 5 people running charitable orphanages or dispensaries.  Yes, they have them in Brazil. He should have then given each one one of these. That would have been real class.

I have talked about this before. So far, this pope has been all words, little action. Words are cheap. Actions are more difficult. Here is a simple test. I will contend that I have given more to the poor, in terms of tangible physical goods, than this pope has! We are not talking words, gestures and kissing babies. We are talking chattels, shekels and dollars. Driving around in a Ford Focus is very nice, but did he sell the fleet of German luxury cars owned by the Vatican and give it to the poor? I have yet to hear of this pope, as pope, as an individual, giving anything tangible to the poor.

I have said that this pope, if he really means what he says, should have a yard sale in St. Peter’s Square. The biggest yard sale in the history of man. A real bonfire of the vanities. Some Catholics took exception, but they can’t articulate why? I will, if given a chance, discuss this with the pope directly.

OK. Some of you are going to get mad. But, I am noted for my straight talk even if it is to do with popes. This is a good pope. I like him. But, I do not think he is the smartest pope by a long chalk or one who is savvy. John Paul II (#265) was incredibly savvy. He was street smart. Don’t let anyone kid you. John XXIII (#262) was very, very smart. He knew exactly what he was doing. Benedict XVI (#266) was intellectual in an academic kind of way but was not street smart — and furthermore did not care about being street smart. He, like popes from yore, did not see a need to related to the plebs on Earth. This pope is very genuine. He is sincere but seems rather naive and simple. Not bad traits, but traits nonetheless.

So that is where we are. Yes, I would rather have this pope than the prior one. I just wish this pope would match his words, especially when it comes to looking after the poor, with actions.

Enough said.

It was spectacular. Far exceeded expectations. So many cars. So many delightful cars. The weather was beyond perfect. The people were nice and were all having a grand time.

Lots and lots of different cars. A real trip down memory lane augmented with reminders of OUR continued GREATNESS as with the new, breathtaking Jaguar F-Type. What a beautiful car. Probably as close to perfection that you could ever achieve in a car.

Acute shortage of Spitfires. Just one Mk II. Is it really true … Have all the Spitfires rusted away? I hope not. I owned two. One red and the other pageant blue (a color I still hate).

Two Stags. Both yellow. Aaahhhh! Lots and lots of TR 6s. That might be my next purchase IF I ever have any money. There was a beautiful one, with just 9,000 miles, for sale for $21K. Wow.

A couple of Triumph GT6s. Haven’t seen one of those in decades. In the early 1970s had a friend, Dave, who owned one. He loved it. It sure was fast. But I still think it is an ugly car!

Great show. Well done. Bravo. Thank YOU.

Per HBO and that is where we watched it.

It looked so promising and ended up being a dud.

What is even more ironic is that I agree, word for word, the arguments used in this movie against the AA. It was like hearing me rant. To me, as is said in this movie, over and over again, not drinking at all is not a cure. A cure would be the ability to enjoy a drink, occasionally, in moderation. Yes, I have had experience with AA members, and yes, I know of two who came to me for guidance given my kick about relying on your brain to help you out in such scenarios. This movie didn’t do justice to any cause. It was a boring diatribe without any redeeming virtues. Even the scene in the bedroom (above) was beyond bland.

I was disappointed. I always have high hopes for movies made in Britain and set in London.

This was a dud. Yes, the arguments about the AA probably need more airing but this, alas, did not cut it.

Shame.

See July 15, 2013 post as to why I have cut back the rants to one or two a day.

#151. It did it AGAIN. Recorded the same movie TWICE. #51 & #147. As I have said before, I record a lot of movies especially when I have subscription to the premium movie channels. Then I can go for months without a sub. catching up on our backlog. So I hit record whenever I see a promising title. I can’t keep track of what I have already recorded. That is why we have computers. Bloody Genie. Bloody DirecTV. They are so stupid.

#152. The unresponsiveness of the Genie Remote Control when you first get going is getting beyond a joke. We sit there in front of the TV without being able to do nothing other than mutely watch the channel that is playing. The delay seems to be getting longer and it was already at around 4 minutes.

#149. It happened again … NO PLAYBACK of recorded program on the Genie ‘piece of garbage’ Mini. This time it was movie. I wanted to check it out to see what it was like. Selected it from the recorded list and hit play. BLACK, bloody screen. Same as #144. Nothing. NADA. Not even static. Had to punch 202 and get out. Tried again. Nothing. Then I hit FF … after a few minutes got video! This is garbage.

#150. Activating MUTE on the Genie ‘piece of garbage’ Mini continues to confound me. Not a record. #125. 4 attempts this morning. Record is bloody 6.

I get to see on a daily basis the number of folks who are still upset that they lost TEN Cricket in the U.S.

This is the company that own TEN and is up to all the shenanigans.

Don’t even bother trying to contact them.

For a start, best of luck, trying to find somebody who can even speak broken, pidgen English. I have tried.

Bunch of Indian cowgirls — not manly enough to warrant being called cowboys
(and I apologize to our U.S. cowgirls in advance since they have class).

That is IT.

We, U.S. cricket lovers, remain screwed.

This was multiple logon problem I reported on July 24.

Basically, if you used Online Storage File Folders, which is a paid service for storing files online (i.e., ‘in the cloud), you could no longer just get to it from your GoDaddy e-mail. Now you had to logon again. This was annoying.

So, with great reluctance I bugged my high-level contacts at GoDaddy. They didn’t understand the problem to begin with … since File Folders is not something that most corporate workers worry about. (They rely on somebody else to backup their files.) But, this evening I had a call to say that they reproduced the problem! Success. Now that they understand it they are going to fix it.

They have raised an internal escalation trouble ticket. This is good stuff.

I hate to bother them but they get things fixed. I think they appreciate that I am judicious in bugging them and am also very appreciative.

So, I will let you know. This, however, will only work with the current, i.e., ‘classic view’. When we are forced to use the new interface I will have to fight another battle. But, that is for another day.

#147. The bloody Genie actually did IT. It recorded the same movie twice and even created a folder to store the 2 copies of the movie! I had discovered this bug on July 2. See #51. This time I didn’t spot the duplicate. But, I noticed I had a new folder. Same movie twice. How stupid can you get.

#148. Discovered today that Genie being on doesn’t really help with the no response from remote controller for 4 minutes problem. The TV has to be on too! Amazing.
