Yes, Friday and Saturday. Come Sunday it is done.

This year it is August 2 and 3rd 2013.

We will be there on the 3rd, late in the evening — after the Laconia Multicultural Day.

I REPEAT. Do NOT panic or worse still, get bent out of shape. I am not going to be rich or famous!

I will never be that.

This is 99 cent book. At best I get 32 cents per copy sold!

Doesn’t even cover the cost of my 1/2 glass of red wine per day — that fuels my writing.

Migrant farm workers picking apples in Maine. Right?

I am not sure how many people realize that we have migrant farm workers in Alton, NH. Well we do, and I have seen them here ever since I moved to Alton in 2007.

I know that this is not considered traditional farm country, but, of course, we do have farms and they only produce in the Summer (into Fall).

I guess I tend to notice them more than most since they are the rare exception in Alton in terms of people darker (in skin tone) than me. These folks are from Caribbean or Central America though I heard that they are now based in Florida during the winter. I do not know their ‘status’ and I am not going to find out. I am also not going to divulge anything about where they are since I don’t want to get them into any kind of ‘trouble’. I watch them work. They are pretty diligent. One in particular, at least when I am watching, really does live up to that Southern adage of ‘working like a black. Given that I am noted, particularly so per my wife who loves to claim that all I ever do is sit at my computer for my lassitude and sloth.

All I know is that these migrant workers are employed by one of the staunchest, Conservatives, with a capital ‘C’, who has teabags pinned to her stetson, in Alton.

I assume that there is nobody around here who can work like these migrants for the wages they get paid. I know that they live in a small, metal trailer while in Alton. I have to assume that it is sweltering in this heat wave.

I have no axe to grind. I like seeing them around. Makes me feel less special.

[Funny thing last evening. We went to the beach for the kids dinner. The kids and I had already swum in Winnipesaukee. One of our new neighbours is an ‘Obama’ in genetical make-up. But, it was funny. He said that he is lighter than me! Whatever rocks his boat. Now that my adoptive mother is dead, and has been for 21 years, nobody, other than this Obama-like guy, comments on my skin color — though Deanna, my wife, piped in yesterday, with a comment very similar to what my adoptive mother would have said. Ever since she abandoned me, age 15, and I started living away from her, the FIRST THING she would say when she saw me had to do with the darkness of my skin: ‘you have got darker‘, ‘good, you have got lighter‘, ‘why are you so dark‘. I am not joking. Never, ‘glad to see you‘, ‘how are you‘, ‘how was the trip‘. It was a comment about my skin color — which varies by how much sun I get (and no, I don’t have to and will not use sun screen. I don’t burn. Just tan). So depending on how much Sun I had got, which in those days depended on how much cricket, skiing and running I was doing, I could be ‘dark’ or ‘light’.]

'Cider House Rules' at our wedding.

‘Cider House Rules’ at our wedding. Click …

I know that Maine has a lot of migrant farm workers. Yes, I have read ‘Cider House Rules’. Actually I married my wife because she was the only woman I knew at that time, c. 2002, who knew that the movie that had just come out had nothing to do with the book. The fact that she was quite beautiful didn’t hurt her case. We had a copy of the book next to our wedding cake.

Anyway, if you live in Alton, keep an eye out for the migrant farm workers. If you see them, slow down and wave. No, you shouldn’t stop and try to approach them. You might scare them. They don’t mind me. They think I am one of them.

Reasons 125 To 127 Of The 1,001 Reasons I Really, Really HATE DirecTV.

See July 15, 2013 post as to why I have cut back the rants to one or two a day.

#125. I know for a fact that they are not clever enough, but it is as if the f*ing Genie Bloody Mini has a built-in counter to keep count of how to beat its own despicable damn records for interoperability. Yesterday morning a new record for MUTE — 5 bloody attempts. #124 & #117. Guess what. This morning 6. I kid you not. F*ing 6 attempts to turn off the bloody sound. No! Don’t even dare tell me it is the damn batteries. PREV works, first time, each time. Turning on the sound — using the same f*ing MUTE f*ing button. Twice. Same as yesterday. So six (6) f*ing times to turn it off but it comes on in two. The Genie Mini is a piece of unmitigated garbage

#126. So now that I finally worked out how to use the FAVORITES, I am trying to use that. So hit the ‘UP Arrow’ this morning to access Favorites. You guess it. F*ing NOTHING. Nada. Not even a bloody flicker. That Genie f*ing Mini is FRIGID. It responds to very little. Piece of garbage. I really am going to find a way to sue bloody DirecTV for this. The Genie is a lemon. No question. It finally worked on the second attempt.

#127. As somebody who started programming in 1969, and have a B. Sc. (Hons) in Computer Technology (1974), and M. Sc. (Distinction), from the University of London (1979), in Computer Science, and as a ‘he writes code in pen‘ programmer and microcoder for IBM, I do know a few things about software. This is 2013 — though DirecTV and the Genie seem from the 1970s. Favorites should be coordinated, heuristically, with PREV, i.e., it should contain some acquired, learnt logic. Oh, NO. This is f*ing DirecTV. Favorites is totally DUMB — just like the company and all that work for it. So when you access Favorites the ‘selection’ box is always in the middle. If I designed FAVORITES … the selection box would predict where I will most likely go next based on PREV. So if I had been watching CNN and then used FAV to go to CNBC … when I next pressed FAV it would have CNN selected. Doesn’t mean that this will be the case every time but it is better than always selecting the HISTORY channel which is what I have as my 5th pick — and as thus is in the middle of the FAV box.

Do NOT panic or worse still, get bent out of shape. I am not going to be rich or famous!

I will never be that.

Just means that there is very little demand for books on comets, meteors and asteroids — which MUST be why I write books about them!

I just found it funny. Small things like that amuse me.

Well after having written the two Comet ISON books I had so much cometary data and trivia rattling around in my head, I had no choice but to write this.

I have been meaning to write a bunch of these ‘facts & trivia‘ books for years, but never had the time. So, 101 bullets or ‘nuggets of knowledge’. Deanna liked it. Said it was the best of this year’s books. Yes, it is much ‘lighter’ than the others. It is a fun book and it was fun to write. Yes, of course, I am hoping that there will be much interest in comets as Comet ISON comes into view around November of this year.

This book is a quick guide to comets in a non-traditional way. If you read all 101 nuggets you will know more about comets than you probably ever wanted to know. But, you don’t have to read all 101. This is a ‘dip at leisure‘ book.

This book will be available in paperback — probably for around $5 to $6.

But need to write another books, a children’s book, first. Going to start on that tomorrow itself (confirming the adage that there is no rest of the wicked). With luck that shouldn’t take too long to do.

8th book this year. 19th as sole-author.

[I was trying to work it out today. I think there is at least 3 other books with my name on the cover. It is bad when you can’t remember.]
