This appeared in the Alton Central School (ACS) Facebook page this afternoon — just after I posted about the school bus fiasco.

Hhhmmmm.

No backups? It cracks me up at School Board meetings when all of those at the High Table talk about ‘the cloud‘ as if it is the panacea to all IT sins. Well all this data should have been backed up on ‘the cloud‘. That is what ‘the cloud‘ is all about.

There is a connection here.

From the ACS Facebook page from July 8, 2013. I don't have access. Deanna sent this to me.

One of my many foibles is that I try to pay all my bills and obligations (when I can) — which is why, as I explained in this comment, I am stuck with DirecTV, though having DirecTV is making me physically ill!

So, on Friday, June 28, 2013, we went to the Alton Town Hall to pay our property taxes and also register our van. I did the property taxes and Deanna did the registration.

The Alton Tax Collector is very nice. So after giving her my check I asked her if I could have a look at the current tax delinquent list. She told me that there isn’t one! She invited me, then and there, to look through the tax records and work out who was delinquent — but again assured me that there was no list.

I need to talk to a few people about this. I know that one of them had asked this same question earlier in the year and was told that the list was being updated.

So something has transpired.

I also got thinking. I can’t recall seeing any town enforced foreclosures — though I don’t monitor such things.

I have to suspect, though I could be wrong, that Alton has at least a couple of folks who are a few years in the hole.

I really wonder what the story is. I will, with luck, ask a few folks this evening — at the ad hoc Alton Central School (ACS) School Board meeting to handle the bids for the roof repair.

I would be somewhat miffed if I find that the town is giving delinquents a free ride.

So, I will stay on this too.

Did not affect us since Deanna drove Devanee for her 8 am -11 am ‘Future Prospects Club‘ community activity session.

As she was driving home, close to 8 am, she gets a call. A boy, attending the same session had been waiting for a bus to pick him up since 7:20. He was now thinking of walking to school, by himself, on Rte 28!

I won’t, of course, mention names. But, suffice to say the boy did NOT walk to school.

At 11 we went to pick up Devanee. I went to see if the boy had a way of getting back home. I was met by a teacher who I know. Again, for now, I will refrain from mentioning names to avoid the blushes. She tells me (with what I rightly or wrongly perceived as ‘rather glibly‘) something along the lines: ‘yes, this being the first morning a number of kids got left behind, so we are now making sure they go back on the bus so that the driver knows‘! That did not make me feel very good. I do NOT know what the school, or this teacher, was doing at 8 am. I hope there was a head count and that prompt measures were taken to account for the kids waiting, some outside, for the bus.

This is a COINCIDENCE, but I have here, in my inbox, an e-mail from an Alton mother about this very same teacher — who I think is also classed as an administrator. She is supposed to have told this mother, a few weeks ago, that her son (who I think falls into the ‘special needs’ category due a medical condition) FELL THROUGH THE CRACKS.

Fell through the cracks!

Here we are NOT talking about any cracks in the flooring of ACS. The floors are in good shape.

We are talking about cracks in the administration.

As far as I am concerned, a few kids fell through some other cracks this morning.

Of course these things happen.

But, is it a coincidence?

What I never see at ACS is accountability. Everybody is Teflon coated. The buck never stops at anybody. It just gets tossed away with disdain.

Well, as ever, my primary goal is to document this stuff so that we have a record.

Yes, I will send this post to the Superintendent, Bill Lander, the Principal and two School Board Members.

Yes, I will, rest assured, be doing another post on the: ‘fell through the cracks‘.

As somebody who has spent much of his life on planes, and have various Platinum and Lifetime Gold cards to prove it, I have a vested interest in aviation and airline safety (though I have, based on nothing other than a hunch, have claimed that I will never die in a plane crash).

Two things bother me about this crash.

1/ How do we ‘account’ for the unfortunate death of the 2nd, 16 year old Chinese teenager? Of course, she would not have died if not for the crash in the first place, BUT is it valid to include her death in the casualty count for this crash? Something that I think about. Of course I understand that it was an accident. The whole thing was an accident. But, in the case of this teenager, she was in two accidents one after the other. I fully appreciate that first responders, quite rightly, have to RUSH to the scene of an emergency. But, there is a fine line between haste and recklessness. I, as a parent and flier, would like to see this investigated fully — if that is objectively possible. Could this death have been averted with a bit more care? I don’t know. I just don’t think that a Fire Department, despite their very gallant efforts, should be given a carte blanche when an accident like this happens. We had a situation a couple of years ago, locally, when there was blatant recklessness by a volunteer fire department. So, that is my concern.

2/ I am amazed that I actually don’t know the answer given that I thought I was fairly au fait on these matters. What I don’t know is whether the Korean pilot can be detained in the U.S. to face charges. Not even sure whether it is possible to bring criminal charges against the pilot. Yes, of course, the civil law attorneys probably have already filed suit, as they should. But, can these two pilots be held criminally responsible. I also now realize why I don’t know the answer. Usually the pilots are not around to face the piper. My feeling is that these pilots need to stay in S.F. until we get to the bottom of this.

Reasons 81 To 85 Of The 1,001 Reasons I Really, Really HATE DirecTV.

#81. The movie reviews have cryptic symbols like red tomatoes, green tomatoes, popcorn etc. with NO EXPLANATION as to what the heck they mean. There are even percentages against these symbols. It is like a f*ing private joke. Did I mention that I really, really HATE DirecTV.

#82. In addition to these annoying in their indecipherability icons, the movie descriptions can in some instances be just 2 sentences — leaving you totally in the dark as to what the movie is all about. DISH, in general, had fairly detailed, fairly decent synopsis that gave you a chance in terms of deciding whether you want to record a movie or not.

#83. In the GUIDE the channel names are not properly represented. I challenge you to tell me, without looking it up, where I can find the Bloomberg Financial channel. Yes, it is there. But, on the GUIDE you will NEVER see even a reference to ‘Bloomberg’!

#84. So yesterday, Sunday, I powered up the TV/Genie 3 times. Whereas on Saturday night I had to wait 4 minutes, yes, 4 minutes, for the Remote to become active, on Sunday it was active from the Get Go … why? Because the first time I turned the TV on, Genie was already powered-up since it was recording a movie. The other two times, it had not gone into hibernation because there had not been 4 hours of inactivity. I find this erratic unpredictability annoying and distracting. I don’t know whether I should wait 4 minutes or whether it will work as soon as I power on the TV. Very annoying.

#85. I recorded a 2 hour documentary (very good I must say) from the Military Channel on ‘Lee & Grant’. It has quite a few commercial. And yes, I FF through commercial — which is why, other than with news and financials, I only watch pre-recorded shows. FF with the Genie is not pleasant. It is very slow and jerky. It is like skipping through a PowerPoint presentation rather than a video. THEN, when you hit PLAY … Oh, Dear! It takes ages for the sound to catch up. The video is all over the place. It is quite pathetic.

I Went Swimming In ‘The Lake’ (i.e.,Halfmoon) Alton, NH, Today — First Swim In A Lake This Year.

>> Water temperature in Halfmoon Lake … — June 30, 2013.

P1030793As I said in the above post I typically plan to go for my first swim in the lake around mid-June — a ritual since I moved to the NH Lakes Region in 1992.

It was too cold for me at the end of June.

Then we had the brutally hot weather. It was probably warm enough a few days ago, but we were not around.

Today was the first day we had gone to the beach in nearly a week.

We had all been working in the yard and were anxious to go in the water. The temp. was just right. It was not cold.

It was nice to be in the water, though I have discovered another downside to losing 20 pounds since last Summer. I am less buoyant. I noticed it right away. Plus my physics is good enough that I worked it out while I was swimming. Deanna did believe me. So I checked it out. I was right. Link 1 & link 2. Less heavy, less fat, less buoyant and I could feel it right away. That Teischan decided to climb on my shoulders while I was swimming vividly pointed out that I can’t support her weight.
