I have never seen Don McLean. I would like to see him. I gather that he lives in Maine now.

Checked the weather. Looks fairly promising.

We like Portland, ME, but we haven’t been for a very long time — these days our trips usually terminating at Ocean Park, ME.

So I am thinking of going. Portland is about 90 minutes from here.

But, this is definitely worth checking out. I haven’t been to a ‘real’ 4th of July celebration in many a long year (though as a Brit I, of course, have very mixed feeling about this).

With ESPN, as we are all beginning to appreciate, to our loss, there is ‘theory’ and then there is ‘practice’ — with no apparent connection between the two. This morning’s (i.e., June 29, 2013) CricInfo video page claims that there is a free ‘Highlights: West Indies defeats Sri Lanka comfortably led by Chris Gayle’s brilliant century and a four-wicket haul by Sunil Narine (03:54) | Jun 29, 2013’. Well I clicked on it till I was blue in the face and that takes some doing given my tan — even during this rainy, gloomy June in New England (thanks to my tanning lights).

Nothing. The video shows as 0:00/0:00. That means it hasn’t been uploaded. It is very frustrating. The ICC should be deprived of their collective balls for giving these TV rights to bloody ESPN.

I like watching Chris Gayle and over the last 6 months (using my 80 hour recorded cache from TEN cricket) I had watched a lot of Chris Gayle. He is something else. I was lucky enough to have seen the likes of Clive Lloyd, Viv Richards, Gordon Greenidge and Collis King. [Yes, I was there and saw his 86 at the 1979 World Cup, my abiding memory being Viv applauding him, with genuine appreciation, when we was finally out).

None of them had the physical dimensions and strength of Chris, never mind that railway sleeper that he uses as a bat. I often wonder how Viv and Gordon would have fared if they also had modern, super-heavy bats — they, in their time, resorting to the latest and greatest of that era such as the scoop bat and the Jumbo. Chris’ technique, however, always amuses me. His technique at times is worse than mine, and like him I too could hit the ball, a very long way, if it was just right — it was all the other balls that were my undoing, as is the case with Chris. Interesting that he is allowed to get away with it. But, when he clicks he sure does click.

While waiting for ESPN to load the video you may want to check out the photo gallery. There are some good pictures. This picture cracked me up:

And here here is one of Gayle.

#41. The volume when you change programs or pop-up your ‘List’ or ‘Channels’ functions fluctuates, with no rhyme or reason, in a very distracting and annoying manner.

#42. CNN on Channel 202 is all by itself when all of the other ‘Cable News’, i.e., MSNBC, CNBC, Fox, Bloomberg, are in the 350 range. So I can’t just use Channel Up/Down to surf through the news channels like I could do with DISH.

#43. Each time I watch a recorded show on the Genie I am struck by how slow it is (#36). This is not funny. The bloody thing hardly seems capable of moving. It is beyond slow. I have only had it for a week and I hate it.

#44. I got an e-mail from DirecTV yesterday about TIPS on how to use my service, but there was NOT a single useful thing in that whole e-mail. Just a waste of my time.

#45. Last night, for what I think is the 3rd time (#31 & #21), I couldn’t get the downstairs remote to work. Had to take out the batteries and start again. Not good.

The Genius of TDS Telecom Is All In Their Billing Process.

Though I had railed about this for six months, 3 years ago, I had forgotten about it since I just opted to pay my TDS bill, electronically, at least a week before it was due. That was the only way I could prevent TDS from claiming, bogusly, on my next bill that I had not paid my bill by my due date.

Let me give you some dates so you can understand the issue. As you can see from this snippet from my July, yes July 2013, bill, my due date is July 26. It is and always has been around that, i.e., 26 or 27 of the month.

The way I look at it, and believe me I had plenty of experience paying bills, that means I have to get them my payment on or by the 26th or 27th.

Not so with TDS.

They require at least 3 business days prior to your due date to process your payment, even if you pay electronically. Now note that no credit card demands this. If you have a credit card bill that says due date June 26, you can pay on June 26 and all parties are cool.

But, not so TDS.

But, it gets better. Hence the genius of TDS.

They claim that they ‘cut’ my next month’s bill by the 27th of each month so that it can be in my hand by the 1st of the next month — the 3 days to account for the mail, though I get my bill electronically.

Wait. Wait. It gets better.

To cut the 1st of the month bill on the 27th they close their books on the 24th. I kid you not.

Now again you have to remember the 3 business days to process your payment.

This means, per the genius of TDS, that you need to get your ‘due on the 27th’ payment to TDS by ‘the 21st’ to avoid them claiming that you were delinquent in your payments — and furthermore reporting this to the credit rating companies! Sheer genius.

So now I pay my TDS bill on the 20th to be on the safe side, though my due date is the 27th. That is a ‘week’ ahead.

So, why this sudden outburst. I paid my DISH bill through TDS — for which I got a monthly $5 discount.

I cancelled my DISH account as of June 21. I have e-mails etc. to prove it and DISH, to their credit, has never contested that.

But, my July 1, 2013, TDS bill, which I received electronically on June 26, one day ahead of my June pay date, had DISH billing from June 29 to July 28, 2013. Nice.

Yes, I ranted.

Their accuse. They started cutting the bill on the 21st.

I won’t tell you how this problem was fixed. But, it was not pretty.

I did a quick Google on what others have to say about TDS billing. Not pretty.

So just a heads up.

You might want to check your credit rating …
