Deanna found this very handy link on her FaceBook page under ‘for sale in Alton’.

The link, which is legit, and from the N.H. Dept. of Revenue Administration ishttp://revenue.nh.gov/forms/low_mod_program.htm

I could not get the PDF to download with Chrome. Not good. But, it worked fine with FireFox.

Worth checking out.

I am sure most folks in Alton (that bother to pay their Property Taxes) will not qualify, BUT this is for the whole state and there will be folks that qualify.

You have till June 30, 2013 to get this done. The PDF can be filled in online on the Web.

Check it out.

As promised over the weekend I sent on e-mail and made three calls.

As I had said I had had a fair number of interactions with DISH’s V.P. of International Programming over what used to be an unpopulated electronic program guide; i.e., the description for each program just saying ‘Cricket’ rather than what the actual match was. So you folks really should thank me for the schedule that you now see on Willow. Though not perfect you can at least see the listings for the Tests, ODIs, T20s and IPLs. I went to the CEO of DISH with this. Unlike the CEO of TDS, the CEO of DISH (or his office to be fair) had the V.P. of International contact me.

The V.P.’s name was ‘Chris Ku….‘. Though he went at each other on e-mail, back-and-forth, he was a DECENT guy. And towards the end we had made the peace.

Then in September 2011 I lost my ‘Cricket Pack’ — though I was paying for it. I hit the roof. It transpired that I needed a SECOND DISH to get the ‘Cricket Pack’. Read about it here.

I again went to the CEO. This time I heard that he actually read my e-mail and made a few calls.

It was funny the next morning. I was getting calls from folks, all agitated. Suffice to say the 2nd Dish was installed within the day, and no cost.

I also had two gentleman give me their phone numbers and say, PLEASE call us next time before you e-mail the CEO. Nice.

I hadn’t chatted with Chris K. in months. Sent him an e-mail over the weekend. It bounced. He was gone.

This morning I called up one of those numbers. An Indian gentleman called ‘Amir‘. He had left Dish too. Confirmed that Chris had indeed left. He said that quite a few folks had left.

OK. These are the folks that got the first Cricket Pack.

V.P.’s of large corporations like DISH do not leave just for the heck of it.

So there must have been issues.

Bottom line I am without contacts at DISH. Yes, I still know how to contact the CEO. But, doesn’t seem worth it. I am probably leaving DISH anyway.

So this is just a FYI. Also a chance to again stress the difference between Dish (and GoDaddy) and TDS.

This Latest, Unforgivable, So Unnecessary Indian Cricket Match Fixing Allegations COULD Have An Impact On Willow (& TEN Cricket)

Given that I do NOT follow the IPL I was not aware that we were AGAIN embroiled in yet another cricket match fixing uproar! This beyond the pale.

I happened to visit BBC yesterday to see what they had on THE Queen’s 60th when I saw the above article. I was shocked and angry.

Some of you, devoid of cynicism and possible exposure to corporate high-finance, may jump up and down when I say that this match fixing COULD in the end have repercussions on Willow and TEN Cricket. The underlying connection is MONEY.

Cricket floats on a huge sea of money. The TV companies that own the rights to cricket, of course, have a lot to do with this money. Even if they are in NO WAY involved with the match fixing all this money is interconnected.  So, I think there might be repercussions — and by that I only mean possible lack of match coverage because contracts get pulled or the money supply dries up.

What has happened with TEN Cricket and the U.S., i.e., DISH and DirecTV, has all to do with money. They want more money. I can now see Willow and TEN asking for even MORE money. So all of this is not good.

Check the links at the bottom of the BBC article above.

Stay tuned. I am going call DISH in a couple of hours. [+3 time difference].

Very Good Pope, Bl. John XXIII (#262): 50 Year Anniversary Of His Death. Now That Was ‘A Pope’.

The current pope, Francis (#267), does bear some personality resemblances but in some ways they are also poles apart, a very pivotal Pole having much to do with this (unfortunate) division. Yes, they both come across as very genuine, caring, people-oriented men, though John XXIII was inescapably more avuncular (and jollier) than the Jesuit. I am very fussy about my uncles and I was blessed to have six amazing uncles (all from my mother’s side) — and one I really never got to know because he died when I was young. Of all the popes, John XXIII is the ONLY one that I would not have minded as an uncle — and that I am not Catholic is immaterial, because one of my uncles, my surrogate father, was white, and a Baptist.

Though John was a traditionalists in his own way, he was not dogmatic about it and was more than willing to be pragmatic. Hence his bold, shock-wave inducing call for Vatican II in an effort to ‘modernize’ the Church and make it more people-friendly. Vatican II is what gave Catholics the vernacular Mass — something that the ‘Tea Party’ equivalent of the Church rails against even today; believing that the Latin Mass, that even most priest don’t understand, as being what God wanted.

John is basically the Clinton or Obama of popes. The conservatives, though they have to begrudgingly confess that the man was selfless at his core, still hate what they reckon is the damage that he did to the Church. There is a whole movement that claim that he is an antipope and that all that came after him are illegitimate. Can you see the parallels with Obama?

His life-story is an inspiration. I can’t be 100% sure but I know that reading about him was one of the reasons that made me into a papal historian. Much of the stuff that the current Jesuit is trying to do, like visiting prisons in Rome, are things that were pioneered by John.

Google, it appears, does not do Pope Doodles. That is a shame. John deserves a Doodle.

If you don’t know much about Bl. John XXIII take a few minutes today and read about him. Here is the Wikipedia link.

Just a smattering of my favorite John XIII quotes. Enjoy.

“Consult not your fears but your hopes and your dreams.
Think not about your frustrations, but about your unfulfilled potential.
Concern yourself not with what you tried and failed in,
but with what it is still possible for you to do.”

“See everything, overlook a great deal, correct a little.”

“Men are like wine – some turn to vinegar,
but the best improve with age.”

“You may say to His Eminence Cardinal Tisserant that, as the pope requires his shoes,
he has given you permission to leave the conclave.”

In the first days of his pontificate, John XXIII received a letter from a twelve-year-old boy named Bruno.
It read: “My dear Pope: I am undecided. I want to be a policeman or a Pope.
What do you think?”
The Pope replied: “My little Bruno. If you want my opinion, learn how to be a policeman, because that cannot be improvised.
Anybody can be pope; the proof of this is that I have become one.
If you ever should be in Rome, come to see me. I would be glad to talk all this over with you.

stormJune2From what we experienced the thunder storms on Sunday afternoon/evening were very localized. We got out first thunderstorm around 5:45 pm. Lots of rain. Out yard can do with as much help as it can get so I was glad. The lightning and thunder wasn’t that bad. We lost power around 6:20 just as the storm was abating. That seems kind of typical because the cause of the failure was probably miles away. Nearly always the case with us. As far as I recall this was the first power outage since the February 9, 2013 blizzard. So that isn’t too bad. It was still light outside and I kind of suspected that it might not be a very long outage.

But, I decided to get the two generators out and give them a run. I like to run them for half an hour every month as folks who know this stuff had told me. I father it is to stop bits getting rusty. I remembered that I had been a bit lax and that maybe it was close to two months since I last trotted them out. So we got them out, powered them up, hooked the two cables — and Bob was again our uncle. I also in a rather ad hoc manner help an elderly lady with her generator. So the kids and I walked up to her house and got her up and running too. It was drizzling slightly but it was rather pleasant. I was topless. Probably the first time this Summer. No sooner had we got home when the power came back.

Thank YOU PSNH. That was good. I am happy.

So now I had to unhook and store away three generators. The second storm came by. But that wasn’t bad either. We didn’t get soaked. By 7:20 all was back to normal.

So, all in all it was not a major disruption. The cool air feels good. I turned the A/C off and opened the windows.
