Over the last few years when it comes to computer and peripherals I have been going directly to TigerDirect. They have been good. Really no problems. They tend to have a good selection of refurbished machines and that has been a major draw. But, because of this automatic gravitation towards TigerDirect I have been remiss about checking out Newegg.

I discovered today that Newegg can definitely out do TigerDirect on certain items — in this case a 750W power supply.

TigerDirectpromo

Since I might have blown my power supply last night, I have no choice but to have a replacement unit in hand before Dave Nix comes to take the ‘dead’ PC apart. I spoke with him, of course, this morning. It is possible that it is not the power supply. It could ‘just’ be the momentary on/off power on button or the printed circuit board (PCB) underneath. I am getting a dreadful feeling that it is that PCB. I spent 90 minutes today trying to locate a spare PCB for that 3.5 year Thermaltake Element S case. No luck. So if it is the PCB I will have to get a new case. It will NOT be another Thermaltake! That is for damn sure. They did not impress me today.

Dave reckons that given the brawn of the ‘dead’ system even 700 Watts (which is a lot) might have been pushed to its limit! So he suggested I get an even bigger P/S. 750W. Think about. You know how bright and hot a 150 W light bulb is. This is 5 times that! Fortunately, even though it is rated 750 W it is not burning 750 all the time. 750 is what it can deliver.

Anyway, by habit I went to TigerDirect. There prices are OK. They offered free shipping (and P/S are heavy) but you had to sign-up (as with Amazon) for a ‘$79’ prime account. Screw that. Decided to check Newegg.

3.5 years ago I bough ALL the components for the now ‘dead’ PC from Newegg. They were good. Gave me 12 months of 0% interest credit. So, I have an account and all of that with Newegg.

Newegg, of course, had comparable 750W power supplies (with modular design to boot), ‘a bit cheaper’ but with genuinely free shipping. So I ordered through them. Henceforth I will check both Newegg and TigerDirect out though I now have an idea as to how it works: TigerDirect is better on built/refurbished system, Newegg, per their original claims from decades ago, excels when it comes to components.

Just wanted to share with you.

WillowonDirect

I checked last night and called them up a few minutes ago.

Direct TV like DISH is now down to Willow — at $14.99/month.

That is diabolical.

Yes, I got confirmation. TEN is indeed Indian owned and Indian run. That explains it all. Right now, per their own Web site, TEN on TV is only available in India, Singapore, Hong Kong and UAE!

Alton Central “Bullying Issue” Much Has Been Happening Behind The Scenes.

Just in case there was anybody out there that thought that I dropped the ball on this important issue far be it from the case. That is not my style. I don’t drop too many balls and I do get a lot done.

Over the last two weeks there has been much happening. There have been a lot of e-mails, numerous phone calls, visits to the SAU office, letters, documents, at least one ‘right to know‘ and even some face-to-face meetings.

But, since many in Alton don’t seem to care about this issue I will not bore you with what has been happening. But, it is very strange to me. From what a few of us can see bullying (in its many forms) would appear to be the biggest threat facing our kids today. Compared to the damages that can be done via bullying concerns about dust in the air kind of pale in comparison. But, still have all of this raw emotion when it come to the school renovation, but deafening apathy when it comes to taking steps to stamp out bullying. Yes, to be fair one other mother e-mailed Deanna with the bullying being experienced by her two kids. From her e-mail we even learned a whole slew of new vocabulary. IF you folks only knew.

Well yesterday there was a very useful and I think productive round-table (as it happened) with Mr. Lander, the Superintendent. After what had been quite a weekend, with at least one very interesting meeting, I called up on Tuesday and requested that meeting. Five of us met with Mr. Lander; Deanna & I, the parents of the young lady who is trying to get this issue addressed and Mr. Steve Miller, the School Board member — who attended as my guest, and as a concerned Alton resident (as opposed to a Board Member). Let me just say that I was ‘happy’ with the meeting as were the other parents.

That is enough.

P.S., That was my first real interaction with Mr. Lander and I was suitably impressed. Steve Miller was right. He had always maintained that I should give him a chance. Thanks Steve.

Have a great weekend.

I am sure this was a first for me. Though I use PC for long periods a day, I don’t ever recall a computer blowing up on me or fizzling out. I guess I was just lucky.

The computer that blew up was 3.5 years old. Had to replace 3 fans on it a couple of months ago. But it appeared to be doing fine.

I used it for a few hours this morning with no problems. Shut it down around 1 pm since we had a bunch of things to do. We didn’t get back home till about 9 pm. Around 10 pm I pressed the on button to power it up and it went ZAAPPPPP and sparks flew out from the button. Was not a pretty sight. No burning smell. Just light a bulb blowing. I guess it is the power supply. The PC had a fairly brawny, high-end, 700 Watt power supply. Not sure whether it fried the motherboard etc.

I had a backup PC, which is what I am using. Nowhere close to the specs of the original but it has a dual monitor video card and has Windows 7. I had configured it to be as close to the other one in terms of the software. Using Chrome with its auto-synch across machines helped. I was delighted how quickly I could get the backup running. Had to call TDS for a bit of help setting up the Static IP address but they helped out quickly and it was smooth and quick. Installing the HP printer was a bit more hassle. Then remembered how to do that too.

So tomorrow I will call David Nix and see where we go from here. I am bit bummed but doing better than I expected. This PC, a refurbished Lenevo unit from TigerDirect that costs 1/4 the price of the other, does quite well. So maybe the secret is to get a less powerful machine. I will keep you posted.

TEN Cricket & DISH Network Appears To Be A Contract Dispute. TEN Pulled Signal From Dish Yesterday!

As promised last night (or more like early this morning), I did call up DISH to find out about what happened to my $19.99 ‘Cricket Pack’ that went from 3-channels to ONE — overnight.

As ever I got a very nice, very helpful rep. I find that DISH does have very responsive, very motivated reps. I like them and they seem to like me. That my bill with them, with the $19.99 ‘Cricket Pack’, is around $130/month probably has something to do with it.

The Rep checked his own in-house program details. Yes, his description of the ‘Cricket Pack’ said NEO and TEN Cricket. But, he also found an ‘e-mail’ broadcast to them that told them that TEN was history — at least for now. TEN Cricket supposedly pulled the signal yesterday — most likely without too much notice.

The Rep claimed that DISH was working with TEN to get the signal back.

Sounds like a contract dispute. I, of course, don’t know the details. I suspect the ‘Cricket Pack’ wasn’t as big a money spinner for DISH as they had hoped. It was mainly targeted at Indians living in the U.S. and Indians by nature are ‘close, very close, to their dollar‘. [That is a beautiful expression I learned from Weirs Beach marina owner, the elder Mr. Thurston, who also told me that he never takes his Rolex off his wrist because the change in temperature was the biggest bug bear to those temperamental (overrated) watches.] If they can watch some cricket for free on the Internet they would opt for that, any day of the week, than paying a ‘Rupee’ to watch it on a TV. Well, I am not Indian. Watching cricket on a computer does not hold any appeal for me, though I do have a 27″ HD monitor.

The Rep, after making some calls, gave me a 6 month discount. But, I cancelled the ‘Cricket Pack’ anyway. As I said in my earlier post I have 2 months worth of cricket already recorded and bloody Willow is not showing the ‘ICC Champions Trophy’. A pox on them all. But, I am still getting my 6 months discount. The Rep insisted! I told you, they like me.

I am sure both sides are to blame in this sorry mess.

I also established that I am well clear of any DISH contacts. Last night (and by that I mean 1 am this morning) I started checking out Direct TV. I already had one online chat with Direct TV. They, at least of now, carry TEN. The Champions Trophy is on TEN. Yes, I could have Direct TV by June 6. So watch this space.

The Alton Town Wide is on our ‘Annual Do List‘. I don’t think we have ever missed it since we moved to Alton. A couple of years ago we went even though it was bucketing down. Proved to be a lot of fun. A few folks still had sales in their garages or in front porches. Not many intrepid pickers about. Some good finds.

The official map is already online (in contrast to Meredith, which wouldn’t divulge it until the day of the sale to prevent pickers from going to the sites early). Deanna will print the map out and bring it along, though we on the whole poke around Alton independent of the map. For a start only those that ‘registered’ with Parks & Rec, obviously, appear on the map. There are many more who decide to do it, on the day, without getting on the map. As the map shows, and as we have found, much of the ‘activity’ is away from the ‘Lake’. The side streets and ‘estates’ tend to have some of the more interesting sales — dirt roads usually promising to be quite interesting.

Just noticed that New Durham is having their Town Wide on June 8. Don’t think we can make that. We promised to help out at the Laconia Airport 2nd Annual Open House — at some point during the day. Maybe we can get both in. Enjoy.

I got a heads up from a reader this afternoon in the form of this comment. Thank you, Vijay. I went and checked. Sure enough.

I didn’t care about NEO. I do care about TEN Cricket. Most of the West Indies games are covered by them and I am addicted to watching the West Indies. So …

Not good. Not sure whose fault it is. Most likely DISH threw them out.

I also found that Willow is not covering the ICC Champions Trophy starting in the UK next week. Not good.

I scrolled down my DVR recorded list tonight. I do have about 60 hours of recorded cricket. That is 2 months worth of watching.

So I will be cancelling my ‘Cricket Pack‘ from DISH tomorrow, after, of course, trying to get them to compensate me in someway for their breach of contract. They still claim that their Pack features 3 channels. Also time to look into moving to Direct TV. I am sure they will give me some very good deals.

IF You Are Concerned About Your Prostate Health Forget The TV Ads., Talk To A Doctor About A Prescription For Cardura (Doxazosin).

Dec2013x125

Click for more info. or just do a search on 'Cardura'.

Click for more info. or just do a search on ‘Cardura’.

I have been meaning to write about this for months. Everytime I see those prostate ads on TV featuring ex-football players I cringe; for them and for those that might listen to their pitch.

Until I hit 45 I really did not know anything about prostates. I had heard a neighbor talk about it but I had not paid much attention. Up until that time I had never heard of anybody with prostate cancer or prostate enlargement etc. Remember, I do lead a sheltered life. Much has changed since. I now know a bunch of folks that have had their prostates removed and all of them regret it. I did a lot of digging around c. 1998 and learnt a lot. In the last 18 months, as some of you know, there has been lots of reports about the need for PSA testing and the earlier craze for having your prostate whipped out at the slightest sign of cancer. Way back I had decided and told anybody that would listen that I would NEVER have my prostate taken out even if I was diagnosed with severe prostate cancer. From what I could see the radioactive pellets, which in those days (due to limited test results), were only rated to work for 8 years, seemed a much more palatable solution. Now when I talk to folks that did have their prostates removed they typically concur that in hindsight they would have preferred the radiation approach.

I also found this out and it has been confirmed to me by multiple doctors including two urologist. There is nothing (as yet) that can stop a man from getting prostate cancer. As with all other muscles in our body, and the prostate (like the heart) is a muscle, the only thing that seems to help is exercise. And there is one and only one way to exercise your prostate — and trust me, it sure beats jogging! An “O” a day, my oft stated mantra for life, is the best thing you can do for your prostate — with an “O” day basically translating to a lifetime ‘batting average’ of 1 a day. So if you are a man of 50, you better make sure that you have exercised your prostate at least 18,250 times. If you are 60, like me (in a few months), you have to be at 21,900. With luck you should have been able to wrack up 95% of those numbers just in a decade in your youth! If you haven’t you better get cracking.

Cardura has nothing to do with prostate cancer. Cardura is all about SLOWING DOWN the rate of prostate enlargement — the pressing problem they scream at you on those TV ads. Cardura can be taken as a preventive and now that it is available as a generic it is INEXPENSIVE. From what I can see Cardura is a fraction of the costs of the stuff being plugged on the TV.

Cardura is only available by prescription.

1998 was pivotal year for me health wise. I was working and travelling like a crazy man — that being the height of the dot.com era. All that travel and very long work days did take a toll. I was lucky that I met two great doctors that year. Both were young, one an Indian. They were both BIG into preventive medicine. One, the Indian, a great cardiologist, put me on Lipitor and some high blood pressure medication. The other a urologist put me on Cardura (which also helps with blood pressure). I was too busy those days to even check on this stuff. I just took all these pills every night, without question.

About 7 years later I was getting my prescriptions filled at Walmart in Gilford (NH). They had a really nice pharmacist who I had got to know quite well (because we were frequent customers). As I am paying for the Cardura I happened to say something along the lines of: “I don’t even know why I am taking this …“. His reaction on hearing this was quite amazing. He got visibly ‘agitated’. He went onto tell me that Cardura is one of the few miracle drugs on the market! I didn’t know that. He gave me a long spiel about how effective it was and how research continually validated its effectiveness in slowing down prostate enlargement. What amazed me the most was how passionate he had become about this drug. That was good enough for me. I have never question Cardura again. I take it, I think 4mg, every night.

So, I am just passing this on. It just kills me when I see those TV ads because I worry that they are misleading folks.
