The Alton Central School (ACS) proposed funding, in light of this Saturday’s Deliberative Session, appeared in the Thursday, January 31, 2013, ‘The Laconia Daily Sun‘, as a front page story. Since there had been some discussion on this blog on this thorny issue, I was somewhat familiar with what was being said. This statement from Mr. Lander caught my eye and attention.
He said it would be: ‘less than $1 per $1,000‘. Less than is a BIG phrase in this context. How much less? A couple of cents, 25 cents, 50 cents or was he being cute and saying that it would be just around $1 per $1,000. Mr. Lander, as he should be, is no doubt a man of means and rich. I am glad for him. For me, $1 per $1,000 is not chump change, though we own one of the more modest houses in Alton.
I know it is not a requirement, but I was curious whether Mr. Lander owns property in Alton. I couldn’t find any, but I might not have looked properly. Plus, he doesn’t have to even live in Alton.
Per the database I don’t own any property either because the property ownership does not end with my last name. So, while I was on the database I checked on who else on the Board has real skin in the game. I, having been to his place, knew that Mr. Miller had a big stake. $1 per $1,000 adds up for Mr. Miller. So, I am glad that Steve is really taking a stand on this.
Yes, I know that there are many that don’t pay taxes. But, if you do pay Alton property taxes you may want to refresh your memory that the tax rate went up 4% last year.
