Google, in their always cute ‘top left‘ motif, started giving us the head’s up on this birthday since late last night. Yes, I use Google even past midnight. 172nd birthday.

Most know him, deservedly, for his iconic, deeply visceral ‘The Thinker‘. He was, however, ultra prolific in multiple forms, also been a painter in oils and watercolor. Something that many may not have appreciated was that Rodin invariably made multiple copies of his work, actually having mechanical ‘duplicating arms’ to help copy the outline from a finished sculpture to a new block of material. He also employed an army of assistants to help with the copies. So there are supposed to be at least 20 Rodin authorized copies of ‘The Thinker’. That took me by surprise when I saw one at ‘California Palace of the Legion of Honor’ in San Francisco.

So lets take this birthday as an excuse for a little bit of Rodin indulgence, he considered the ‘Father of Modern Sculpture‘.

Rodin watercolor from 1905. He would have been 65.

The Kiss, 1901 – 1904. Multiple authorized copies exist.

My favorite, maybe second favorite, Rodin, ‘The Burghers of Calais’ by at the Victoria Tower Gardens, London, England. Again there are copies including one at the New York Met.
