There Has Been NO Software Update To The ‘Garmin Fenix 5 Plus’ Since December 1, 2018; 6.51 Beta Only Fixes Biking Anomaly!

I hadn’t used my ‘Garmin Fenix 5 Plus‘ for 20-days. I was instead wearing an ‘Amazfit Verge‘ with a very pleasing AMOLED display.

Yesterday, when I went back to the Fenix 5 Plus, the first thing I did was USB charge it on my PC. While I was at it I fired up Garmin Express to check for updates. There were NONE! I was surprised. I expected there to be one. Nada.

So, today I went looking. OK, there is a 6.51 beta, released on December 17, 2018, but per the Change Log it only has one bike-related fix.

Hhhmmm … I am surprised and disappointed. I had expected that Garmin would have rolled out a slew of fixes and some new features. Maybe it was the holidays. Stay tuned … What else can we do. Try to contact Garmin? That was a JOKE.

My ‘Garmin Fenix 5 Plus’ Is Now At Software Version 6.0.

Downloaded automatically, without I even noticing it, when I plugged my Fenix 5 Plus into my computer on Friday night, November 30, 2018. Couldn’t have been a large download. By the time I fired up ‘Garmin Express‘ it must have been already downloaded because I did NOT see it updating on ‘Express’.

Only realized that there was new software once I unplugged the USB-cable and a message came up about the new software that has been downloaded.

Have not noticed ANY changes, whatsoever, as yet.

I went looking for what changes had been made. Refer to 3rd image above. I am NOT blown away. Nothing that applies to I. Hhhmmmm. I am sure they fixed various ‘small’ issues that they are not telling us about.

IF Your ‘Garmin Fenix 5 (Plus)’ Stops (i.e., Hangs) During USB-Charging.

This, i.e., my ‘Garmin Fenix 5 Plus‘ going dead while I was charging, happened last Friday. Never had that happen with any of my other Garmins and I have owned 4 others.

The first clue I had was that ‘Garmin Express‘ claimed repeatedly that it could not sync with my USB-connected Fenix 5. That was strange. I checked the watch, The charging did seemed to have stopped — with a green charging screen similar to above. I waited, I waited. Nothing. The ‘amount charged %’ was not moving.

Unplugged it. Watch was FROZEN. Back button would not work. Could not get the green charging screen to disappear.

Knew that I had to try a ‘soft reset’. So, held down the power button. NOTHING.

Eventually realized that on the Garmin 5 Plus it takes MORE THAN 25 SECONDS for the ‘soft reset‘ to kick in!

That was the secret — just holding down the top left power button until the restart kicked in. As soon as it started the restart I knew I was going to be OK. And I was.

I have charged it a few times since with no incidents — and I am charging it right now as I write.

Just wanted to share this in case you too, alas, experience this frustrating problem.
