Kamala Harris is 50% Tamil. There is nothing wrong with that. I, personally, though I am, by birth, a Sri Lankan Sinhalese, have nothing against Tamils in general — though, I, like million others, were not fond of what the ‘Tamil Tigers‘ did in Sri Lanka. My current doctor, BY CHOICE, is Tamil and my prior cardiologist (who has since moved away from New Hampshire) was also Tamil. Growing up our neighbours, who we interacted daily, and were very much part of the family, were Tamil and one of our closest family friends (a gifted sculptor from Madras (now Chennai)) was Tamil.

Yes, 99.5% of Americans would never have heard of the ‘Tamil Tigers’ or care what or who they are. But, there are millions who do worry about the ‘Tamil Tigers’ — and there are probably a few thousand Sinhalese with American citizenship that will factor this in when they vote in 2020.

IF (and that is a HUGE, HUGE ‘IF’) Kamala Harris becomes president her attitude towards the Tamil Tigers will be pivotal.

If she is sympathetic to them, despite all of the International condemnations, it could change the balance of power in central Asia. India would be happy, BUT not China. Sri Lanka would be screwed.

I doubt whether this will ever come up in a debate.

But, somebody needs to ask her this question, on the record.

Don’t you think so?

Just in the last ten weeks, or so, I have done three posts on the seriously impressive cakes, available in Sri Lanka (and just in Sri Lanka), thanks to ‘Kapruka.com‘.

These cakes are for Valentine’s Day — and that makes me GRIN for multiple reasons. This is a totally new holiday to Sri Lanka. Growing up, we had never heard of it. C’est la vie. All to do with the HUGE, multi-million (I suspect) Sri Lankan diaspora in the West. They are hell bent on sharing their holidays with those back home. Nothing wrong. Makes a lot of people very happy and Karuka very rich.

I Had No Idea Presidential Hopeful Kamala Harris Was ‘Black’, But I Didn’t Know Obama Was ‘White’.

by Anura Guruge

I had seen her on TV and just assumed she was ‘white’ with blush. Honestly. Never ever occurred to me that she was black! No, I had not taken much notice of her first name ‘Kamala’. Maybe if I had I might have given it some thought. I thought it was ‘Camala’ — and Spanish.

Here is the kicker. She has no ‘white’ in her. Indian Tamil mother and Jamaican father. Yes, one or more of her grandparents may have been ‘white’. Does not matter. It is just that I had not realized that she was anything other than lily white. Just goes to show you.

Tamil mother — from India. No, I am cool. I really STILL do have Tamil friends. Growing up one of my many surrogate mothers, our next door neighbor, was Tamil. My current doctor is Tamil. So, that is actually good.

Yes, I honestly did not know, until I became an ardent follower, that Obama was white. Always confused me when folks called him black. He was as much white as he was black.

Not so in the case of Kamala Harris. But, that is OK. I think she is smart and cool BUT I am not sure whether she is the next Obama. The next Obama for I, is Michelle.

Just in the last few weeks I have done two posts on the seriously impressive cakes, available in Sri Lanka (and just in Sri Lanka), thanks to ‘Kapruka.com‘.

These cakes are for a Tamil holiday, ‘Thai Pongal’. It is not one I am familiar with. But, the cakes sure look good. So, I wanted to share them with you. Enjoy.

Oh, in case you are wondering, ‘Thai Pongal’, in 2019, starts on January 15 and goes on for 3 to 4 days. It is a harvest celebration.

Anthony Bourdain’s “Parts Unknown” From Jaffna, Sri Lanka — Is Likely To Upset Some.

by Anura Guruge

Click image to access the official “Parts Unknown” Website.

I happened to see the “Sneak Peek” on CNN this morning — and the words that struck me were “trying to rebuild after the long civil war …“. The version I ‘heard’ (more than ‘saw’ because I was also reading something on my pad at the same time) did NOT mention Jaffna. I made a note to check it out online when I got on my PC — and possibly do a post. So, here it is.

This episode, Season 10 Episode 5, to be aired this Sunday, October 29, 2017, is from Jaffna and is to feature Tamil cuisine.

That is where enough in that Jaffna is indeed a part of Sri Lanka (and has always been so) and Tamil cuisine is very much a part of Sri Lankan culture.

But, I am not sure whether Anthony Bourdain, who prides himself of his ‘mischievousness’, is trying to be intentionally provocative and, in this case, potentially divisive.

Just focusing on Jaffna is not going to present a balanced view of today’s Sri Lanka and many who watch the show will go away with images of a rundown, decrepit country. That will not please many Sri Lankans.

So, you have had a heads up.

To be fair, Anthony Bourdain, appears to have done an episode from Colombo 5-years ago. I haven’t seen it. “Parts Unknown” is not a show I watch much since I am not that inclined to spend my time watching gluttony and wanton consumption of alcohol.

I had expected to find a Stamp Set for this year’s, i.e., April 14, 2016, Sinhala New Year, i.e., Aluth Avurudda. IF they did I could not find them — and please put me right. I will, of course, update this post.

Here is the link to the Philatelic Bureau of Sri Lanka. I couldn’t see any New Year related announcements.
