Just in the last ten weeks, or so, I have done three posts on the seriously impressive cakes, available in Sri Lanka (and just in Sri Lanka), thanks to ‘Kapruka.com‘.

These cakes are for Valentine’s Day — and that makes me GRIN for multiple reasons. This is a totally new holiday to Sri Lanka. Growing up, we had never heard of it. C’est la vie. All to do with the HUGE, multi-million (I suspect) Sri Lankan diaspora in the West. They are hell bent on sharing their holidays with those back home. Nothing wrong. Makes a lot of people very happy and Karuka very rich.

In case you are wondering I am nothing but a customer when it comes to Kapruka. Though I give them huge amount of publicity I get nothing from them. That is OK. They have never asked me to do these posts. I do them for YOU.

I Had No Idea Presidential Hopeful Kamala Harris Was ‘Black’, But I Didn’t Know Obama Was ‘White’.

by Anura Guruge

I had seen her on TV and just assumed she was ‘white’ with blush. Honestly. Never ever occurred to me that she was black! No, I had not taken much notice of her first name ‘Kamala’. Maybe if I had I might have given it some thought. I thought it was ‘Camala’ — and Spanish.

Here is the kicker. She has no ‘white’ in her. Indian Tamil mother and Jamaican father. Yes, one or more of her grandparents may have been ‘white’. Does not matter. It is just that I had not realized that she was anything other than lily white. Just goes to show you.

Tamil mother — from India. No, I am cool. I really STILL do have Tamil friends. Growing up one of my many surrogate mothers, our next door neighbor, was Tamil. My current doctor is Tamil. So, that is actually good.

Yes, I honestly did not know, until I became an ardent follower, that Obama was white. Always confused me when folks called him black. He was as much white as he was black.

Not so in the case of Kamala Harris. But, that is OK. I think she is smart and cool BUT I am not sure whether she is the next Obama. The next Obama for I, is Michelle.

Just in the last few weeks I have done two posts on the seriously impressive cakes, available in Sri Lanka (and just in Sri Lanka), thanks to ‘Kapruka.com‘.

These cakes are for a Tamil holiday, ‘Thai Pongal’. It is not one I am familiar with. But, the cakes sure look good. So, I wanted to share them with you. Enjoy.

Oh, in case you are wondering, ‘Thai Pongal’, in 2019, starts on January 15 and goes on for 3 to 4 days. It is a harvest celebration.

Anthony Bourdain’s “Parts Unknown” From Jaffna, Sri Lanka — Is Likely To Upset Some.

by Anura Guruge

I happened to see the “Sneak Peek” on CNN this morning — and the words that struck me were “trying to rebuild after the long civil war …“. The version I ‘heard’ (more than ‘saw’ because I was also reading something on my pad at the same time) did NOT mention Jaffna. I made a note to check it out online when I got on my PC — and possibly do a post. So, here it is.

This episode, Season 10 Episode 5, to be aired this Sunday, October 29, 2017, is from Jaffna and is to feature Tamil cuisine.

That is where enough in that Jaffna is indeed a part of Sri Lanka (and has always been so) and Tamil cuisine is very much a part of Sri Lankan culture.

But, I am not sure whether Anthony Bourdain, who prides himself of his ‘mischievousness’, is trying to be intentionally provocative and, in this case, potentially divisive.

Just focusing on Jaffna is not going to present a balanced view of today’s Sri Lanka and many who watch the show will go away with images of a rundown, decrepit country. That will not please many Sri Lankans.

So, you have had a heads up.

To be fair, Anthony Bourdain, appears to have done an episode from Colombo 5-years ago. I haven’t seen it. “Parts Unknown” is not a show I watch much since I am not that inclined to spend my time watching gluttony and wanton consumption of alcohol.

I had expected to find a Stamp Set for this year’s, i.e., April 14, 2016, Sinhala New Year, i.e., Aluth Avurudda. IF they did I could not find them — and please put me right. I will, of course, update this post.

Here is the link to the Philatelic Bureau of Sri Lanka. I couldn’t see any New Year related announcements.

I chatted with one of the Skybox TV developers (in Canada) this afternoon. We had been ‘chatting’ briefly on the phone and on e-mail over the last 10 days, but this was the first time we had a long, productive two-way dialogue about my impressions of ‘TEN Cricket’ with the Skybox TV and what was coming down the pike.

I had been told from day one that a DVR-like Catch Up feature would be available for TEN Cricket.

There is one Indian-program Catch Up TV channel on the Skybox right now. I actually played with it tonight. It is cute.

TEN Cricket is the next channel to be added — SHORTLY.

They are just waiting on getting the electronic schedule since this is key — as with a DVR. When activated you will be able to go back a month and pick programs, in the case of cricket fan, specific matches, we want to watch. This will be great. Can’t wait.

I will get updates in the coming days and I will keep you posted. This will really be a breakthrough. We might even get to see Tri-Nations.

Stay tuned.

‘TEN Cricket’ In The U.S. With Skybox TV Is Definitely An Acceptable Option. Very Good Quality.

I have been using the Skybox TV since Friday night, August 9, 2013.

The picture quality with the box is very good and 99.6% of the time there is no jitter, delays or breakups. It does not bear any resemblance to normal Internet streaming video. Though I refuse to watch ‘streamed’ cricket on a PC, I can definitely live with the Skybox TV.

I have been watching some of other Indian and International channels available through the box in addition to TEN Cricket. Again the quality is excellent. The wife and the kids love Bollywood music though none of us understand anything other than English — though I recognize a few words of Hindi from all the time I have spent in India. There is a Tamil channel but I don’t understand any Tamil — and lets face it, I hardly understand Sinhalese anymore, and definitely cannot read it, let alone write it (though all my schooling in Ceylon, till I was 14 was in Sinhalese).

I have watched, in total, about 2.5 hours of TEN Cricket. Did not experience any problems, whatsoever, during that time. It really was like having TEN on DISH. Deja Vu.

As I have said before, the most I time I can usually to devote to watching cricket is 45 minutes a day and that is between 10 and 10:45 pm. So I won’t get a chance to watch a ton of cricket, but I will try and watch each day to see how we go.

So stay posted.
