Teischan (11) Is Working On More Table Art …

by Anura Guruge

The table she was working on earlier in the month, for her hamster cage, is done and the cage is sitting on it. See below.

She started on this new table this morning. That is NOT real wood or a veneer. She painted that on! It is a faux finish just using a brush and paint.

I love it. It looks so real.

But, she is going to paint over it! Well, it is her prerogative. The artistic temperament. So, I wanted to capture these pictures for posterity before she paints over it.

Teischan (11) Embellishes Her Painted Hamster Cage Table.

Teischan has a problem common to many artists. She is not sure when one of her works is done. She — and we — thought the table was done by Sunday night. Appears it was not the case. Yesterday, after school, she had the inspiration to add these ‘black’ trees (or I think that that is what they are). I must confess they do add some je ne sais quoi.

In the late 1970s, while working for IBM, I was extremely fortunate in getting to spend some time with the GREAT British painter, conservationist and rail enthusiast David Shepard. One night over some drinks, in a pub, he told me his secret as to when he knew when one of his masterpieces of done. He would look at it, over his shoulder, using a mirror. If it looked right in the mirror he knew it was done.

No, no. Not a Teischan creation, BUT one of David’s most commercially successful paintings.

Garmin Vivoactive 3 Firmware 2.90 — Released 7-Days After 2.80 To Fix Touchscreen Issue!

You should be able to find the latest firmware news here.

This firmware update, just 7-days after they release 2.80, to fix the battery drain issue, came out of the blue.

I was synching my Vivoactive 3, via Bluetooth, with my Android tablet, when I noticed that it was taking unusually long. So, checked. Saw it was doing a software update. Surprised me since 2.8 was so fresh.

Just to be on the safeside came upstairs, USB connected it to my PC, and ran Garmin Express. Sure enough. Firmware version 2.90 — to fix a touchscreen issue. Must have been serious. I had not noticed. Maybe I thought it was a bit sluggish BUT I had had any issues with the touchscreen and I had been running 2.80 for a week.

So, heads up.

Best to update to 2.90.

Happy New Year.

I suspect we will have 3.0 before the Chinese New Year, which is in February.

But, I also got this by e-mail from an American lady, ex-Hampton Beach, NH,
now living in Italy,

who found me via my pope work.

“Hi, I’ve already read a little over a quarter of the ISON book. I cannot believe you have to give your books away ! I HATE technical books…(I was a compliance officer for a bank and had to read regulations constantly). Your book reads like a story. I would pay for this in a minute! Your style is very easy to read. If I had ever heard your voice I would probably be able to imagine you talking. Man, it kills me when I think of books for which I have paid that were not written a fraction as well.”

In the end, this is why, I, like so many writers of yore, write.
While fame and fortune would be nice, in the end we feel we have a story to tell and want to tell that story.
If you can, in addition, enrich the life of one other person, that alone is worth it.

IRS Form 8949: You Can ‘Copy & Paste’ Into 8949 At Least With The IRS ‘Free Fillable Forms’.

As ‘Tax Day’ approaches, as was to be expected, there is growing interest in IRS Form 8949 — which only came into effect as tax year 2011.

If you use Quicken (which I refuse to do, because I really don’t see why it needs to know my inside leg measurements, what statin I take for my cholesterol and the make of car I drive), I gather that Fidelity (for one) will provide downloadable 8949 data that will get automatically filled in. Well, even that will not convince me to use Quicken (though I did use it, a decade ago, when I was honing my tax preparation skills). That Fidelity does not provide us with this data in Excel (comma separated data) form is inexcusable and I did complain about it this year. I assume that there must be other financial institutes that are gracious enough to provide this data in Excel form to their clients.

So what I do is create my own Excel using the PDF (or HTML) of the tax statements available online with Fidelity.

I will copy all the columns and then do a PASTE SPECIAL (Text) into a Word document. I will then use the global replace function of Word to add tabs. Then I do a Text –> Table conversion. Then I delete the columns I don’t want. I then copy the entries of this table to a new Excel spreadsheet — again doing a PASTE SPECIAL (Text).

Then, just because I enjoy messing around with Excel, I subtotals of all the transactions to make sure Fidelity got them correct! Having the subtotal also serves as a ‘check sum’ to make sure I that I haven’t lost any transactions.

Then I fire up Free Fillable Forms (FFF) and create a new Form 8949. I can then copy across a complete row, from Excel to FFF and then paste it.

So, if you notice I haven’t typed in any of the transactional data per se. All of it is essentially copy, paste …. copy, paste.

I can do this fairly quickly. That I have two monitors which enables me to keep the Excel on the left-hand side monitor and FFF on my (main) right-hand side monitor definitely helps.

Hope this helps. Enjoy.
