Forcing A Sync Between Garmin & An Android Phone — When ALL Else Fails.

by Anura Guruge

This is for ALL of you who have trouble getting
Garmin watches, e.g., Vivoactive or Vivofit, to Sync.

This is ONLY for Android phones & tablets.
(It might work with Apple but I have never owned an iPhone or iPad.)

Follow these steps.

Go to ‘SETTINGS‘ and click on ‘Apps & Notifications

Select ‘ALL apps’.

Go to the 3 Vertical Dots (menu/option) icon (Ξ) on the TOP RIGHT and click on that.

Click ‘Show System’ (Apps).

Scroll down to ‘Bluetooth Share’.

Click on ‘Force stop’.

Do NOT panic. Do not fear. It will automatically restart after the stop.

Get out of ‘Apps & Notification’.

Go to Garmin Connect and do a manual Sync.

This really should work.

Worked for me 100% of the time with Vivoactive HR and Vivoactive 3.

I now have a Google Pixel 2 and a Garmin Fenix 5. They sync together pretty well.

The newly announced Fitbit ACE for kids at $99.95 and it doesn’t even have heart rate monitoring.

It was Teischan’s 12th birthday last week and I wanted to get her a Fitness Tracker since everybody else in the house has one.

But, it was going to be a challenge of sorts since she had told me repeatedly that she did NOT want one, would not wear one and that she hated having anything on her wrist! So, I didn’t want to get anything expensive if she was just going to discard it. Plus, given my far from ideal experience with my Fitbit Ionic, there was NO WAY I was going to get another Fitbit product — PLUS they are stupidly expensive.

So, I started doing a bit of research. I came across this iWOWNFit i6HRC, which was $35.99 at the time I placed the order (plus I had $4.99 in Amazon credits). It looked decent and interesting PLUS it came with a PURPLE BAND. Teischan likes purple and I was hoping that that would appeal to her.

Well, she has been wearing it — much more than I could have hoped for. She likes it!

It seems to work.

Very clever design. It is like a USB key. The USB plug to charge it is built in. NEATO. No need for cables. It is integrated.

The APP was easy enough to download and install on a 18-month old ASUS Android phone.

Paired FIRST TIME with no problem. Garmin could learn from them.

Synching has not been an issue.

I was so impressed I ordered ANOTHER. So, we have TWO (2). The second one is for Deanna who has misplaced her Fitbit Flex 2. The iWOWNFit i6HRC, at $20 less, does MUCH MORE. She got her’s yesterday.

I am NOT sure the numbers are accurate — as yet. Need to check that. Still early days.

Sleep tracking works. That is good.

So, we are cautiously optimistic.

I had seen that this was on the way, and early this morning (i.e., just after midnight) I got a notification on my FitBit APP (on my Google Pixel 2) that there was a Software Update pending.

It took me 3 tries to get it to start downloading on to the Ionic.

It refused to do it over Wi-Fi and insisted on doing it over Bluetooth. Once it started it took about 20 minutes. The APP was way-out of ‘sync’ with the watch. It still kept on saying ‘downloading’ … ‘installing’ etc. when the Ionic was way past that point … restarted and ready to go.

I have NOT encountered any problems as yet.

Syncs OK, across Wi-Fi.

My day off from running. So, do not know whether the GPS inaccuracies have been fixed.

As usual I have noticed, on the Fitbit Ionic forum, that others are having problems with this firmware update also. I think I have lucked out because my Google Pixel 2 has the latest and greatest Android software that money can get.

I will keep you posted.

Much Unrest Among Fitbit Ionic Users Post Latest Firmware Update, i.e., Version 27.31.1.29.

I have not experienced MANY of the problems that others are complaining about.

Synching appears to be a problem. I had a few glitches BUT I have managed to sync. But, I have a Google Pixel 2 with the latest, and I mean latest, Android software.

Yes, there is the GPS mileage error that I reported and Fitbit support acknowledged as a problem! A lot of others are seeing that.

I also agree with many that the Resting Heart Rate is SHOT! Not good.

As for the others, I have NOT noticed. I checked ‘floors climbed’ and that seems within bounds.

I am NOT as upset as I should be — and OTHERS ARE.

I am NOT keeping this Ionic for long. So, I really have no emotional attachment to it. Basically I am not wedded to it or Fitbit.

The brand new, as yet unreleased, Garmin Forerunner 645 (without music) seems to be in my future.
