“The Great American Bake Show” 2016 – 2017 Starts Today, December 1, On ABC.

by Anura Guruge

greatamericanb1

For those missing the original “British Version” — though YouTube has 40+ episodes of “The Great British Bake Off” from years — the American version could be some form of consolation.

At least last year, i.e., 2015, the skills of the American contestants were nowhere close to that of their counterparts from the Ol’ country. Ditto, but, even more so, for the U.S. presenters. They don’t have the charm and flair of the inimitable Mel Giedroyc & Sue Perkins. C’est la vie.

I am recording the series. We did watch it last year.

As Expected “Great British Bake Off” Moving From BBC To (Independent) ‘Channel 4’ — But Sue & Mel Won’t.

This sad outcome had been anticipated going back to March of this year. I actually did a post about it on March 15, 2016.

Another blow to the poor license-fee supported BBC.

That Sue Perkins and Mel Giedroyc have confirmed that they will NOT present for the ‘Channel 4’ version is very heartwarming and makes me VERY PROUD. The right British thing to do. I like those two ladies and rooted for Sue to be on “Top Gear“. And this has reaffirmed that they are class acts. Bravo.

The announcement that appeared at the end of the “Great British Bake Off” Season 6 Final about Ian baking a cake for the Dalai Lama.

Yes, Ian Cummings and the Dalai Lama go back a long time. He is said to be the official U.K. photographer for the Dalai Lama. Click to access Amazon listing for this book.

The YouTube video. Very cute. The Dalai Lama at his irrepressible best — asking for the candle to be lit. MUST WATCH. Click to access.

This is ALL very good, cute, rewarding and fulfilling BUT I have a very basic, but pivotal, question.

Did Ian Cummings, the Season 6 “Great British Bake Off” also ran, use ANY EGGS in baking this cake?

I suspect he did.

Why? I am trying to work out whether the Dalai Lama STILL eats eggs.

Why? Because I am going to start writing a book about what it was like, in Ceylon, in the early 1960s, to grow up a Buddhist and I am starting my first chapter by talking about eating eggs.

Many Buddhists eat eggs.

The Dalai Lama USED to eat meat. He is said to have become a vegetarian late in life. But some vegetarians eat eggs. Plus today you can get unfertilized eggs.

wattalampam

Wattalampam — my mother would make VERY large dishes of it with dozens of eggs. It was beyond DIVINE. You felt the pounds just adding on to your body as you just smelled it.

I have know strict Hindus that would NOT eat eggs eat fancy puddings that my adoptive mother made and they contained dozens of eggs. I actually confronted her on this. This Indian, a dear friend of the family, had seconds and then thirds of my adoptive mother’s famous ‘Watalappam‘ (a extremely rich cream caramel) — that she would cook mainly for me — one night in Paris. I knew that she had used OVER a dozen eggs preparing it. So this elderly, very gentle gentleman ingested a ton of eggs. He had to have known. My mother said nothing. But this was kosher. Hindus that refused to eat eggs would eat things that contained eggs. Strange?

So I am curious. What do YOU think?

I am writing this at 12:00 pm Eastern (U.S.) on Wednesday, October 7, 2015.

The Series 6 Final will ONLY be airing on BBC (UK) in 3 hours, i.e., 8pm (London).

So I am writing this 3 hours ahead of the airing and I have not gone snooping around the Web to see if I can find out who won. I don’t want to know UNTIL we watch it, probably Friday, on YouTube. Yes, that is going to be difficult tomorrow morning when I read the U.K. ‘Daily Mail‘, first thing in the morning, as is my wont. MAYBE I will forgo that for 2 days! Pretty drastic … right? But, we love this show. Totally addicted and who would have suspected. I DVRed it, last year, on a whim. Had no idea that we would all get totally hooked.

Anywho, I am rooting for Tamal, and I am doing so NOT because he is Indian. Remember I am NOT from India.

I think he has been, right through the show, the ‘fox’. Yes, I know that he has become a British heartthrob.

Lets face it, this is a REALITY show and they, in the end, care about ratings. They would, of course, like this show to be as big as ‘Top Gear‘.

Tamal, as the winner, would give the show quite a bit of publicity and appeal. That is just my thinking; I, a professional cynic.

Interesting how the finalist panned out. Two white, two brown; two males; two females. Yes, yes, that was a coincidence, convenient or otherwise.

Anyway, fingers crossed. Actually we don’t mind who wins. We like them all. I can relate to Ian. They are all very likable and I am sure that that is a fundamental criteria as to who gets to appear in the show.

We have been watching it on YouTube. I detest the buggers who put in fake ‘clips’ just to get hits. How desperate do you have to be to be such a scummy, lowlife? I need to tackle that issue at some point — with YouTube. Lets eliminate SPAM posts. So annoying.

But, for the good stuff … the FINAL. May the best baker win.

Yes, I am excited but mainly for the kids and Deanna. During the Summer we watched “Passage to India“, “Gandhi” and of course, tons of “Downton Abbey“. Well, this from what I can see, is “Passage to India” crossed with “Downton Abbey” — with Gandhi thrown in for good measures. Looks very compelling. Can’t wait.

Just wanted to SHARE with you since I didn’t want you to miss it. I will try to keep you posted as to the U.S. schedule. OK?

This is ALL great news. As ever I got the ‘heads up’ from my U.K. “Daily Mail“, which I read daily, in bed, first thing in the morning, while having my coffee and listening to CNBC.

I am going to watch the YouTube episode tomorrow. Can’t wait till it appears on PBS. Though it says September, it might make an appearance on Boston Channel 44 on August 26, 2015.

I will keep you posted. Enjoy. Cheers.

Update: We watched Season 6 Episode 1 on YouTube, in its entirety, on August 12. It was, at least for us, NOT in HD. That was slightly disappointing because we are so used to HD in nearly everything we watch. And it wasn’t full-screen. It was inside a frame with the name of the show, i.e., “Great British Bake Off”, on it. But it was the full show. We got to see the whole weekend, the 3 bakes, “Star Baker” — and who was kicked out. So it was good. Can’t wait for Episode 2. Kind of NOT sure why PBS is bothering. Most of us will have seen it before PBS gets around to it.
