Reader’s Digest “The American Way Of Life” — Still Applicable?

by Anura Guruge

So, what do you think? Still relevant, still germane, still applicable?

I think over 50% of the ‘electorate’ will have no problem with it.

So, when was this first published? In March 1949 — 69-years ago.

Yes, the pictures I show is of the ‘March 1959‘ issue and that is where I found it. But, if you read the bottom of the picture it says the image was first published ‘ten years ago this month‘ … and that the image has during that time being reprinted over a billion times. Wow.

A few years ago I picked up two BIG boxes full of OLD Reader’s Digests — some from the 1950s. This was cool because I grew up in Ceylon, in the 1950s and 1960s reading Reader’s Digests that my father had shipped to him, every month. So, this was nostalgia.

The boxes had lain untouched in the attic for years. The other day I grabbed a copy, at random, to peruse. What a difference 59-years make. Today’s ‘RD’ is so superficial, insignificant and SLIM. RDs of the 1950s and 1960s had gravitas and GIRTH.

I hate to see these go a waste. So, if any of you are interested, let me know.

Looks Highly Unlikely That The Sony a7 III To Be Announced This Weekend.

by Anura Guruge

No chatter at all, at all.

So, we have to start thinking end of March or maybe even mid-April.

My druthers insist that a new a7 announcement has to be imminent. But, I could be wrong.

Just keep YOU posted, as promised.

MetroCast Down In Alton (NH) For 56-Hours Following Blizzard Of 2017.

by Anura Guruge

I write this as one:

  1. Who regularly SINGS the praises of the MetroCast high speed Internet service; viz., Example 1Example 2 & Example 3.

  2. Who has been a MetroCast customer for 20 years.

  3.  Who was the ‘Customer Support Manager’ for ITT Business Systems (UK) & Northern Telecom Business Systems (UK).

  4.  One who in February 2015 filed a BBB Complaint against MetroCast — and prevailed.

Yes, we understand that the storm was disruptive and wreaked havoc.

My gripe is the LACK of communications and the sheer disregard for customer relations & the POOR lack of redundancy in network design.

That the Call Center was down for that long is not acceptable.

That it took SO LONG before they started posting updates on Facebook was not acceptable.

That the Facebook updates, to begin with, were so sporadic was unacceptable.

That the Facebook updates did NOT reflect reality and was indeed FAKE NEWS was unacceptable. I had firsthand experience of this. I finally managed to speak to a MetroCast rep. at 11:57pm on Thursday night; March 16, 2017. As usual he was VERY NICE. I told him that the latest Facebook update was saying that the Alton node had been activated. He told me, point blank, that that was NOT THE CASE! And the Facebook update had been made at least 30 minutes earlier.

Yes, I had my service back, at full bore (i.e., 150/160Mbps), 14 minutes later! Coincidence.

Not sure how many of YOU remember. BUT we had a similar MetroCast flap in February 2015.

MetroCast was NOT UPFRONT with us on that.

I ranted and railed … and filed a BBB complaint.

I know that heads rolled!

Not sure whether a VP should be held responsible for this. But, IF I was MetroCast NH’s Customer Support Manager I would have handed in my resignation this morning.

I am glad that I have my 150Mbps back.

I was NEVER without Internet — thanks to TDS.

I have BETTER REDUNDANCY at my house than MetroCast has in their network.

I have a separate 15Mbps TDS Internet connection just in case!

I am, as of right now, going ahead and getting a load-balancing router and UPGRADING TDS … {SMILE}

IF Sony a7 III To Be Announced Within Week — Lack Of Rumors/Chatter Seems V. Strange.

by Anura Guruge

There has been a muted expectation that
the Sony a7 III might be announced at the
March 18 – 21, 2017,
The Photography Show“, in the U.K.

was discussed in this post.

IF this is to be the case you would have thought that there would have been much more ‘chatter’ by now.

With the Fuji X-T2 and the Olympus OM-D E-M1 MkII, last year, there were tons of ‘leaks’ at this stage, i.e., a week ahead of supposed announcement.

Are we in for a disappointment?

Is Sony this good at keeping announcements under wraps?

Don’t they need to invite press to the event etc.?

Just seems strange.

Hope I am wrong and that we do see the a7 III unveiled this weekend.

Fingers crossed.

Evolution & Timing Of The Sony Full-Frame a7 Family — Ahead Of Possible a7 III Announcement Next Week.

by Anura Guruge

The possibility of the Sony FF a7 III being announced at the
March 18 – 21, 2017, “The Photography Show“, in the U.K.
was discussed in this post.

The a7 III intrigues me.

IF it has the same sensor technology as the a6500 then it could be the best of all Worlds in the context of Sony: Full Frame, In-Body Image Stabilization (IBIS), latest sensor technology and reasonable (i.e., 24 MP) resolution. So, I am waiting to see what happens. Yes, I could tempted to get the a7 II(I) rather than the a6500. I waited this long. {SMILE}

As is my wont, in my scarce spare time I did a quick Excel to compare the a7s and to see their announcement schedule.

No, the a7S nor a7R, in either version, interests me. I could not deal with 42MP!

So here is the Excel spreadsheet.

Sony Full-Frame a7 III Likely To Be Announced At “The Photography Show”, U.K., March 18 – 21, 2017.

by Anura Guruge

Pay attention to the highlighted (in red) sentence fragment.

The complete sentence reads: “We pride ourselves on being at the forefront of new technology in the photographic industry, bringing out ground-breaking innovations, such as the A7 and RX series.”

Seems like a big CLUE.

A new a7 model is due and the a7 III seems like the most obvious.

Not that far away. Just three weeks. Sony might announce just ahead of the show.

Yes, of course, I will keep you posted.

Sony Has No New Camera Announcements At CES 2017 In Las Vegas.

by Anura Guruge

They announced 7 cameras in 2016 — which included the Sony a6500 in October and the a6300 in February.

I guess the next ‘biggie’ will be in March 2017.

Just a heads up for the Sony fans re. CES 2017.
