It is patently obvious when YOU THINK about it, BUT I am not sure how many of us have ever given it any thought.
Babies, worldwide, when born are NOT ‘programmed’ (or predisposed) to speak any particular language. As long as they are ‘normal’ they will pick-up & learn whatever TONGUE they are most exposed to, i.e., the so called ‘mother tongue’.
I, as you should be able to tell, am NOT good at languages. I listen to Chinese or Russian & am CONVINCED that I would never have been able to master such languages. But, IF I had grown up being exposed to one of those languages it would have become my mother tongue. WOW.
You have to think about this. Quite neat when you finally get you mind around all of it.
No baby is born to speak English, Swahili, Sinhalese, Italian, Russian, Vietnamese or whatever.
Babies are born language-neutral.

Mhairi Black (20), 20, SNP Member Of Parliament (MP), Youngest Since 1667 — Is A Riot. Good For Her.
by Anura Guruge
I saw her (for the very first time) on Thursday night, on SkyTV, ebulliently acknowledging (and celebrating) her momentous victory. How could you NOT be glad for her? She was this one big toothy smile of a face. I was happy for her. I was happy for the U.K. It is wonderful that we can elect somebody so young (and also so raw). I applaud the Scots for their courage and conviction in electing her.
I was NOT sure how she stacked up in terms of age. I wasn’t sure whether we had had 18 year old MPs. Now, thanks as ever to the peerless U.K. “Daily Mail“, I know. Youngest since 1667.
Her vocabulary bothers me somewhat. Yes, until I was 23, and did so overnight, cold-turkey, I used to swear — every other word that came out of my mouth was a swear word and some of them were quite graphic. So she is 20. She is entitled, BUT I hope she tones it down. I have a 26-year old daughter and a 23 year old son. They probably having seen that I don’t even use the (to me dreaded and disgusting) ‘s-word’ don’t swear much. I never talked to them about it. They just don’t.
I also hope she rethinks her dress code. She, from what I could see, wore a man’s gray suit. Confused the heck out of me. Maybe she was trying make a statement (and yes, I can read something into that), but I think she will look better if she dressed a tad more femininely. From what I can see her ‘boss’, the head of the SNP, Nicola Sturgeon (and that name conjures up caviar for me), dresses very snazzily in bright female attire.
I have since read that her dad is a retired teacher and was very instrumental in her very successful campaign. Maybe he will, like us dads do, start having some quiet words with her.
But, I am happy. Way to go. I would be proud to have her as my daughter.
And in case you were wondering, ‘Mhairi‘ is Gaelic for Mary, i.e., much loved and longed for child.
