Medicare Supposedly Pays $17,000 For A Knee Replacement, Only Paid $5,596 For My Knee Surgery.

My Bill for Knee Surgery.

I had my quadriceps tendon repair surgery,
at ‘
Frisbie Memorial Hospital‘ —
performed by Dr. Charles Blitzer
of ‘Seacoast Orthopedics
on Thursday, March 7, 2019.

There was no pain to talk about
— throughout, from surgery to now.

Knee replacement, of course, is a much more involved procedure with expensive hardware involved. In my case they only had to insert 3 small ‘fiber’ plugs. So, there was no hardware costs. But, it just goes to show.

Yes, I know of doctors that will NOT accept Medicare patients just for this reason. The lower reimbursement. Not sure whether this applies to surgeons, especially orthopedic surgeons. They must get most of their business from old codgers like I who need knee and hip replacement — though I was, of course, different.

That huge 100% price differential is NOT RIGHT. It is worse if you don’t have insurance. Hospitals really rape you. I know. Dartmouth-Hitchcock raped me — anally at that.

There has to be a middle-path. Between the Medicare amount and what other insurances pay.

This is why the U.S. healthcare system is so screwed up.

I am sure glad I have Medicare — with the Humana Advantage overlay on top of it (which costs me NOTHING).

‘Garmin’ ‘UltraTrac’ GPS Distance Measurement Is A Cruel Joke.

by Anura Guruge

I am shocked and appalled! This is NOT RIGHT. UltraTrac can’t be this bad — but it is.

That 0.44 mile walk was from Wednesday, April 17, 2019 — my first day off crutches in 6-weeks after my knee surgery. My first walk in 6-weeks. As I am walking I realize that the GPS distance is off — way off. But, I persevered. Today, 2-days later I clocked the distance of just a part of that walk using my car. Just that section came to 0.4 miles and I didn’t even bother driving half of the ‘course’.

This is stupid. Same problem that Garmin has with open water swimming.

There really should not be an issue. It should be able to compute the distance between the GPS reading. It, with my Garmin Fenix 5 Plus, even has the gyroscope to tell it which way I was headed. Very disappointed.

Did a Google on ‘UltraTac’. This is a known and COMMON problem. I am amazed that Garmin hasn’t bothered to fix it.

So, heads-up. Do NOT, I repeat, DO NOT, use UltraTac. It is a joke.

Dramatic increase in my step count yesterday & today.

Today’s first real walk in 6-weeks.

I think I walked further (but didn’t have the ‘proper’ GPS setting). C’est la vie.

5-more days on crutches. Will be glad to ditch them.

Doing OK. This was in Wolfeboro. I was getting ready to go for a walk along ‘Cotton Valley Trail‘ on crutches. I did some of it, but it was cold and windy.

As you might have noticed I am not shaving as much as I used to prior to the injury.

The Bill For My Quadricep Tendon Tear Knee Surgery.

Pretty amazing. All of it. The surgery, the recovery and the bill. Overall I could NOT have been happier.

The surgery itself was near miraculous in that I essentially had no pain afterwards. Was able to stop taking Tylenol and Aleve by Day #8. Never had to take even one narcotic pill. So, that was great.

Wasn’t sure what to expect in terms of the bill.

I am amazed. Gobsmacked. I shouldn’t complain — but, I will, because I am like that. Smile.

So, who do I have for insurance. An Humana Advantage Plan (on top of my Medicare). The Plan is HumanaChoice PPO. I don’t pay a premium. They get my Medicare premium from what I gather.

That they can just write-off $12,166.56 of the bill is MIND BLOWING. If I didn’t have insurance I would be on the hook for this.

This bill is worth studying.

Credible 27,000 Subject Study By Prestigious ‘Tufts’ Claims That Vitamin D & Calcium May Cause Cancer Risks.

Tufts University‘ does have a good reputation and is usually thought of as being credible.

This was also a relatively large study, i.e., 27,000 U.S. adults. So, I think you have to give it some credence.

Yes, yes, yes, you can always find studies that will say the opposite.

I will confess I have become more and more skeptical on the benefits of vitamins over the years. I smile when folks older than I wax lyrical about how Vitamin C helps ward off colds.

I learnt, just yesterday, to my cost, that Vitamin E oil does not do diddly to reduce scarring! I had been applying it on the scar I have from my knee surgery.

Now this. I do NOT take Vitamin D or Calcium on their own.

I do, because my doctor insists that I do, take a single multivitamin for old men each night.

I do, however, know folks who take Vitamin D and Calcium. I will have to tell them about this study.

Still on crutches and a full, locked leg brace — but still insisting on hobbling about. Both legs are atrophying in front of my eyes. But, no pain. Of that, I am glad. I was dreading having to live with pain.

As far as I know, I have to be on crutches for 2 more weeks. If they try to force me to use them any longer we are going to have an issue. I am resigned that I will have to wear a knee brace for the rest of my life. I probably will need to wear two — one on top of the other.

Well 3-weeks post surgery and I am still around. Sorry.

Here is I, waving to YOU with one of my crutches.
