‘Canon EOS RP’ Kit/Bundle I Got From ‘Cardinal Camera’ Via Amazon.

I agnozied about getting a bundle.

In the end I got it ONLY because it was from Cardinal Camera and I have bought cameras and bundles, with success, from them in the past.

All I wanted was the: camera, 24-105mm f/4 L ISM USM lens, the grip and the adapter. The bundle was STILL CHEAPER than these 4 items together and this was the ONLY WAY I could get all 4 as a kit/bundle.

The rest was FLUFF. I relented and kept the 128GB SD card. It is a Class I. I shoot Class 3.

I haven’t tried the flash or the spare battery. It charged, but I haven’t put it in the camera.

I gave most it to the 18-year old daughter who has my old Canon T3i.

I am fussy about what I use with my camera.

The 4 items I needed. The rest was FREE and fluff.

The whole bundle. Impressive.

The Canon EOS RP body.

With the grip attached.

Comes with NO instructions. The original door has to be removed. I had to work it out. You can see it in front.

The grip definitely helps. Too small without it. Should be STANDARD.

The MOST important bits. My wrist straps. I do NOT use a neck strap. Getting these on was the hardest part.

With the ‘Expert Shield’ screen protector. Worked like a CHARM the second time around. No wonder they send you TWO.

With the Canon RF 24 – 105mm f/4 L IS USM lens attached.

Review Of Canon’s Mirrorless EOS M5 By U.K. “Pocket-Lint” Far From Flattering.

Yes, it does, to my intense relief, validate my (painful) decision a month ago (or so) to forget the M5 and instead pin my hopes on the new Sony a6500 (getting a Sony a6000 kit (for the lenses and practice)) along the way.

Again, as with the Fuji X-T2, my hunch about autofocus woes have proved to be right. This is getting scary. It is either pure luck and coincidence or I am, finally, getting good at calling mirrorless cameras.

My Temporary Sony a6000 Arrives From ‘Cardinal Camera’ With A Lollipop Inside!

by Anura Guruge

Click these images to ENLARGE.

This was so cute.
Also had a camera bag thrown in.

Appears to be brand new.
Looked immaculate and I had to set date/time.

Plus, first picture was DSC00001.

So I am happy.

I can’t stop smiling.

This was a STEAL!

This is what it is being sold on Amazon right now.

a6000new
I got it for $699!

Refer to this post.

Already customized to my liking and needs.

I don’t like neck straps. I am into wrist straps ($7.99).

Also got a leather half-body for protection and added grip ($15.99).

Clip on ‘other side’ allows me to clip on a lanyard-type strap if I need to carry it around my neck.

See below.

But this a6000 is but the precursor to a Sony a6500 — which will be my main camera.

Bad Enough Getting A Sony a6500, But I Am Getting A Sony a6000 Into The BARGAIN!

arrangedmarriageNo, no, no {SMILE} the pressure of being forced into an arranged marriage with a Sony a6500 has not made me FLIP!

This was all rather calculated and opportunistic.

Two major factors at play:

  1. I have no lenses at all, never mind any Sony e-mount lenses. So I need some lenses.
    ….
  2. I was going to rent a Sony a6300, before buying the a6500, to get familiar with how these cameras work,

Then I had seen the “Black Friday” special that said you could get a Sony a6000, with two lenses (the ones that I wanted), i.e., the 16-50mm and 55-210mm, for $699.

I did some sums. If I factor in the cost of the rental (never mind the hassle of going to a FedEx office to return it), I could get a Sony a6000 body for $145!

The Sony a6000 body RETAILS for $478!

Kind of like a no brainer!

When I am researching a camera I am diligent. I check all my sources regularly.

Friday night noticed that ‘Cardinal Photo’, on Amazon, was offering the a6000/16-50mm/55-210mm KIT, supposedly new, at $699. That is cheaper than what Amazon had fro REFURBISHED.

Then the listing went away.

Later on Saturday I found it again.

Called Amazon. Spoke with ‘Andre’. Got an e-mail from him ASSURING me that the Cardinal Kit would be BRAND NEW and that I could return it, if it was not …

I even called up Cardinal Photo …

I placed the order. Remember I had returned my Samsung NX500. So I had money ‘in the bank’.

So … stay tuned.

Fuji X Manual Focus Firmware Update June 9 — Needs More Work.

by Anura Guruge

As I posted June 13, I successfully installed Fuji’s June 9th firmware updates on my X-E2s and all three of my lenses. But I not currently convinced that it really has done much! I use manual focus quite a bit — I would guess more so than most. I use it with peaking (in this case set to ‘high red‘). I spend a lot of time tweaking the focus, using Manual Focus Zoom, and the Electronic View Finder (EVF). I am no stranger to focus peaking. Have been using it for nearly 2 years, on Sonys and Panasonics

Yes, of course, I get some spectacular results that even amaze me! No question. But I also get more disappointments than I think is warranted. Yes, again. I don’t expect every picture to be good BUT given the effort I put into MY manual focus I would have thought that my success rate would be higher. Yes, it could be me and my bad eyes. I know that. But I am using focus peaking and twiddle the focus until I get the most amount of peaking. At that point I expect the focus point to be in focus. But I find that it is not.

See picture below. I took it yesterday. I focused on the 3 flowers on the foreground using peaking. Probably spent a minute making sure that peaking said that the flowers were in focus. Then I get this. Notice that leaf behind is focused to the point that you can see the hairs. But I focus peaked on the flowers.

I am NOT convinced about Fuji focus!

I am renting a Fuji X-T1, from Lumoid, for a week — soon. (Order placed and confirmed.)

It is this concern about focus — which is paramount for me — that is making me curious about the Pentax K-70.

Adorama, for one, has the price right. Click to ENLARGE. From Adorama.com.

This would appear to be a ‘Fat Finger‘ problem. They have put the $899.95 price for the KIT against the body. And that appears to have propagated throughout, with the kit being $250 more — as it is supposed to be.

I spoke with an Amazon Rep. just now. Yes, it is possible to speak with Amazon Reps with no hold-time. I do so often. SMILE. I reported the problem and using my persuasive skills even managed to secure myself a small monetary reward for doing so — though Amazon does NOT have a policy for rewarding those that help them keep their product listings kosher. I am happy. Can’t stop smiling. SMILE.

Fuji June 9 Firmware Updates Successfully Installed On X-E2s, 35mm f/2, 18-55mm & 55-200mm f/3.5.

by Anura Guruge

Yes, as planned I waited until today, June 13, 2016 — 3 full days after the release — to do the update.

No problems. Very smooth. In total took less than 10 minutes for all 4 updates and I, intentionally, took it slow so as to avoid any ‘finger trouble’. I even gave the Fuji battery a quick ‘top up’ charge in between the body update and the lens updates!

Did the body, i.e., X-E2s, with just that update on the card.

Then I formatted the card, topped up the battery, and copied ALL 3 updates to the card at once. As I had read on a Fuji forum that was no problem. Camera effortlessly picked up the right update for each lens that was mounted. That saved quite a few steps and time. Lens updates, with the file size just 388KB, were quick. I think I could have had all 4 update (or more) on the card at the same time BUT I was willing to do the body separately.

Did the 55-200 zoom last. Then couldn’t resist taking some pictures, in my darkened study, at ISO 12,800 using manual focus. I will upload the images laters. It could be my imagination and WISHFUL thinking, BUT they seemed sharper!

Lens updates I succesfully installed.
