Margaret Thatcher (My 2nd Favorite Female PM) Was Born This Day, 92 Years Ago; October 13, 1925. (It Was Not A Friday).

by Anura Guruge

Having, as a student, led a protest march against her I became one of the staunchest supporters as I aged — and started making some ‘serious money’! Yes, I was an out-and-our Conservative by the time I was in my mid-20s.

She was a GREAT Lady.

The 5th female Prime Minister.

I never realized that she was ‘that’ old, i.e., born 1925.

She will be remembered. She did some good things. Got me into the stock market — if nothing else. {Smile}

Australian Cardinal George Pell’s Chances Of Being Next Pope, Always Slim, Just Went Out Of The Window.

by Anura Guruge

Cardinal Pell’s papabile prospects were always tenuous. Though some considered him the leader of the true conservatives that opposed Pope Francis’ liberal leanings, he was, nonetheless, ironically to say the least, one of the pope’s trusted henchman! Pope Francis, no doubt, working on Abraham Lincoln’s and Pope John XXIII’s adage about: “Keep your friends close and your enemies closer”.

Irrespective, Pell, increasingly outspoken in his old age (and he is 74), was always a dubious papabile. To be pope he would have needed the vote of two thirds of the cardinal electors and that would have been a stretch. He might have been able, on a good day, get just over 50%.

But this late night testimony to the Australian Royal Commission into Institutional Responses to Child Sexual Abuse has done him no favors. He has come across as an uncaring, opportunistic career politician — just the kind of priest Pope Francis rails about! Well it is unlikely the cardinal electors will want somebody now so tarnished by the sex abuse stain.

Pope Francis’ Zika-Related Contraception Statement Totally Irrelevant & Meaningless!

by Anura Guruge

This per the Vatican is what Pope Francis said on the plane about Zika and avoiding pregnancy.

Number of things to take into account here:

1/ Conservative Catholic spin-masters will — and already HAVE — construe this to mean contraception via NATURAL MEANS per existing Catholic teaching. Basically avoid SEX! See image below.

2/ Women in Latin American countries, Brazil in particular, have been IGNORING the Church’s birth control edicts for decades — as do U.S./Canadian Catholics. I talked about this 5 years ago. See map below. Brazil & Chile have a current fertility rate of 1.8, while that of Mexico & Argentina is 2.3. Rates such as that indicate that contraception is being effectively utilized.

This 62% landslide in Catholic-Ireland is an embarrassment and blow to the Pope and the Church.

You have to ask: “What was God thinking?”

Yes, yes, I know all that stuff about Free Will and that God does not micromanage. But when you are talking about an entire Catholic nation it is hardly micromanagement. It is a MACRO event that affects the whole Church. The way I read this — God was in favor.

Archbishop Diarmuid Martin’s statement, shown above, makes it very clear that Pope Francis, despite his infamous ‘who am I to judge‘ statement, is vehemently against gay marriage. Francis, contrary to what he pronounces, is a very-correct conservative, orthodox Jesuit at heart. He may claim not to judge but he is 100% behind the teachings of the Church that homosexuality is a sin! That is the dilemma of — and with — this pope. What he says in public is NOT what he actually believes in. It is a strange kind of papal lip service.

This Irish referendum will be a challenge. He will have to comment on it — this coming week. Lets wait to see what he has to say. God’s Will etc.

I saw her (for the very first time) on Thursday night, on SkyTV, ebulliently acknowledging (and celebrating) her momentous victory. How could you NOT be glad for her? She was this one big toothy smile of a face. I was happy for her. I was happy for the U.K. It is wonderful that we can elect somebody so young (and also so raw). I applaud the Scots for their courage and conviction in electing her.

I was NOT sure how she stacked up in terms of age. I wasn’t sure whether we had had 18 year old MPs. Now, thanks as ever to the peerless U.K. “Daily Mail“, I know. Youngest since 1667.

Her vocabulary bothers me somewhat. Yes, until I was 23, and did so overnight, cold-turkey, I used to swear — every other word that came out of my mouth was a swear word and some of them were quite graphic. So she is 20. She is entitled, BUT I hope she tones it down. I have a 26-year old daughter and a 23 year old son. They probably having seen that I don’t even use the (to me dreaded and disgusting) ‘s-word’ don’t swear much. I never talked to them about it. They just don’t.

nicola

The red Sturgeon.

I also hope she rethinks her dress code. She, from what I could see, wore a man’s gray suit. Confused the heck out of me. Maybe she was trying make a statement (and yes, I can read something into that), but I think she will look better if she dressed a tad more femininely. From what I can see her ‘boss’, the head of the SNP, Nicola Sturgeon (and that name conjures up caviar for me), dresses very snazzily in bright female attire.

I have since read that her dad is a retired teacher and was very instrumental in her very successful campaign. Maybe he will, like us dads do, start having some quiet words with her.

But, I am happy. Way to go. I would be proud to have her as my daughter.

And in case you were wondering, ‘Mhairi‘ is Gaelic for Mary, i.e., much loved and longed for child.

cameron2015222

As I said yesterday, ahead of the election, I, though now known for my strong democrat leanings (in the U.S.), have never had any qualms about David Cameron. David Cameron is no Shrub, McCain, Mittens or Cruz. He comes across as very balanced, erudite, sane and human. I actually like. I hadn’t paid too much attention to what is platform was BUT now I am hearing that he might be bad news to the U.K. National Health System (NHS) and the still ‘cheap’ (if not ‘free’ as it was in my days) College system. It would appear the conservatives, in order to cut costs, favor a U.S.-like commercialized health and higher education system. That would be a mistake. But they plan to hold a referendum to see if the U.K. should get the hell out of the European Union. As I also said yesterday, I was one of the 2% that voted ‘NO’ in the 1975 ‘should we join the European Union’referendum. So another referendum on this thorny subject would please me. I think we will be better off out of the Union.

On the other hand I do NOT want to see another Scottish independence referendum. Last year’s one took 10 years from my already severely curtailed lifespan. As such the near clean sweep that the SNP enjoyed in Scotland scares and worries me. I want MY Great Britain to continue to be GREAT.

I am glad we did not end up with a hung parliament. Our parliament is great too and I like it working the way it should — the oldest parliament in the known Universe.

While, of course, it will make some extremely happy, this, as you can easily imagine, will NOT sit well with conservative U.S. Catholics. This is a firm slap in the face to the Church’s supposed sanctity of human life. This pope is again reveling in being a maverick for the sake of being a maverick.

It also highlights the arbitrariness of Catholic sin. Suddenly, for a year, it is no longer a sin. What rank nonsense is this?

Check this to see how some cardinals are already rebutting the ol’ pope.

I have, in marked contrast to my intense agitation leading up to the Scottish referendum last September, have remained quite ambivalent about this election — though I have been following it, in somewhat desultory manner, on SkyNews (on my Roku) and occasionally in the U.K. Daily Mail. The real issue is that I feel chagrined that I can’t vote — only being able to do so, as I am due, if I get over there for the election. I miss voting in elections. I have, in all my life, only voted in Britain — and while there I did so diligently without once missing a election or referendum. Yes, I am proud to say even 40 years later that I was one of the 2% that voted ‘NO’ in the 1975 ‘should we join the European Union’ referendum.

In addition, now that we averted the Scottish Independence nightmare I am not that concerned about U.K. politics — given that it is rarely ever as ugly, bitter and decisive as things tend to get over here. Plus the ‘red v. blue’ line is not as marked. Though I have been quite the Democrat since ‘Shrub’ declared his disastrous war, and want the White House to stay in safe Democrat hands for another 8 years, I have no qualms about David Cameron, though he is a Conservative. He is not rabid. He is quite sensible and sane. Plus there is the fact that I was a ‘right of Margaret Thatcher‘ conservative for well over two decades of my life. For reasons I still cannot put a finger on ‘Ed Miliband‘ does not ring true to me and it cannot be just his beliefs. More on that in another post. Furthermore, he, to me, looks Indian. Have you noticed that.

Hung parliament. Never a pleasant prospect. So lets wait and see what comes to pass.

I heard this on CNBC the other morning. It made me happy on multiple counts. Yet another validation, as if one is needed anymore, that low-carb diets, as I keep on stressing, really do work — and work dramatically well.

I am also glad for David Cameron. He is impressive, very presidential. I like him even though he is a British Conservative. I have, having had first hand experience of both, come to the realization that British ‘Conservative’ is a very different — tamer, friendlier and more disciplined animal — to American ‘GOP’. I think I could still be a British Conservative — as I was for many years, when I was an ardent fan of Margaret Thatcher.

That David likes peanuts cracks me up. Peanuts are my least favorite nut. I eat them, but never by choice. I am a Cashew man. I can eat many pounds of cashews a day — which is, of course, not conducive to my low-carb diet. So I have to use restraint.

Pope Francis Despite Mass Appeal Runs Into Opposition & Continues To Contradict.

The pope’s opposition to the same sex adoption law being considered in Malta despite his famous, populist claim as to ‘who am I to judge’, is but just one example of how this pope will continue to trip up since he is playing a dangerous game: making platitudes to please the masses though he has no intention at all to change Church teaching, stance or doctrine. So while he orally panders to the gay community he stands by the book when it comes to the entrenched Catholic belief on this thorny subject. It is very confusing.

Ditto when it comes to his inflammatory remarks about wealth, capitalism and charity. I noticed that on Christmas Eve and New Years Day he was proudly wearing his five (5) gem studded GOLD pallium pins — each worth a few thousand dollars! Those are supposed to represent the rusted nails used to crucify Jesus. IF this pope was serious about wealth distribution he wouldn’t flaunt these gold pins. He would use cheap metal pins.

Ken Langone, one of the founders of Home Depot, confounds me. I see him often on CNBC. He is one of the most obnoxious (and ugly looking) men I have had the misfortune of having to witness. I typically switch channels because he upsets my stomach. But, I am glad to see that he is mad with the pope. But, to be fair as far as I can see Langone doesn’t seem to like anybody other than himself — but that is probably because he hasn’t looked in a mirror in a long time.

Anyhow, here is a small sampling of the HOT WATER that the pope is running into — and will continue to run into. Click on each to access the original. Enjoy.
