Free, Sunscreen Dispensers At “Boston Public Garden”.

Saw these on Sunday, August 26, 2018, when we strolled through the two parks — i.e., Boston Common & the Public Garden — after doing Dim Sum, at the China Pearl, ‘just around the corner‘.

I do NOT use sunscreen, but I know how important it is to others. This is great, especially for the kids. Not sure what the deal is. Appears that it is sponsored by a ‘foundation’. Not sure whether we will see these in Central New Hampshire, but it is a great idea and needs to be applauded.

Bravo & Kudos.

“African Festival Of Boston” (AFOB) — “Boston Commons”, Sunday, August 26, 2018.

We stumbled upon this VIBRANT Festival, serendipitously, on Sunday when we went to Boston for Dim Sum at the China Pearl. Our new routine, as of earlier this year, is to leisurely perambulate through the Commons & the Park after the meal to help digest it. In the Commons & at the Park you never know what you will come across. It is always fun and there are always so much going on.

I wish we had known about this festival beforehand. We would have skipped Dim Sum and had some of their food instead. It looked and smelled divine BUT I was beyond full.

It was fun. Great music and dancing. Bravo. Everybody seemed to be having a great time. Beautiful day. I am glad for the organizers. Maybe next year I can time it better.

“Professor World Band”, One-Man Band — Best Show In Boston, At Least In “The Park”.

There were quite a few ‘street performers’ playing in the ‘Boston Public Park‘ (attached to the ‘Boston Common‘) today, i.e., Sunday, August 26, 2018 — in what was a glorious, near-perfect late Summer day. “Professor World Band“, hands down, by a long chalk, was the BEST — both in terms of the music, presentation and style.

Indubitably the best show in Boston that Sunday afternoon — and he plays for tips. He was SO GOOD we tipped him twice.

Tremendous. Musically outstanding, great songs (from the 1960s — 1970s) sung very well with the instrumental accompaniment just a sheer joy. And they you have the whole presentation, with him rotating himself around. We watched him for quite a few minutes.

We were lucky enough that we got to chat with him for a few minutes. He has been doing this for 35+ years and has played around the world. And he deserved to have. I just got the inkling that he was more than your typical busker. And he confirmed that when I asked him. He has a postgraduate degree in Biology and turned to music, as his way of protesting, during the Vietnam War.

I would love to engage him. He told me his mid-week rates. I would pay him three or four times that. Just don’t have an occasion to bring him up here. I will have to find one.

But, please check him out. You will THANK ME for it. I gather he is at ‘The Park’, in Boston, most weekends during the Summer.

What the symbols in each circle mean, e.g., “T” (MBTA) sign means family immigrated to the Boston area 1965 – 2000.

YouTube video by Julia Vogl explaining the project.

Yesterday, in between visiting the magnificent ‘Boston Museum of Fine Arts‘ and taking a ‘Boston Duck Boat Tour‘ at 5pm we visited ‘Boston Common‘ since Teischan has a new found fondness for it having rediscovered it during our visit to ‘Boston Chinatown‘ for 2018 ‘Chinese New Year‘ in February. As is our wont we headed up to the hard to miss ‘Soldiers and Sailors Monument‘. We immediately noticed that they were installing a very colorful and artistic pattern on the circular walkway around the monument. We all went and took pictures.

I was curious. I saw the “T” signs and thought it might be an MBTA project. I saw a young lady, wearing a volunteer’s jacket, smoothing out the pattern. So, I had to ask … She straightened up and she had a BIG smile. She informed me that it was her project. Wow! I had lucked out. It was Julia Vogl who had created this amazing piece of work. She started to explain ….

It was a Jewish Passover inspired project to represent the freedom and immigration stories of those living in the Boston area. Obviously a very topical issue. I mentioned that I had come over from Britain 30 odd (and very odd, indeed) years ago. She informed me that she currently lived and worked in London. There was NO stopping us from there. We talked, and we talked. Suffice to say we had a ton in common. I took her over to introduce her to the family. She was charming.

What an interesting project.

To begin with, just looks for the GREEN pieces of pie. The GREEN represents FREEDOM. There is a fair amount of GREEN. We talked about that.

The ‘T’ signs that had caught my eye indicate those that had arrived in the Boston area between 1965 — 2000. That would be I too. There is a fair amount of those ‘T’ pieces.

Check it out.

She will be there again, in person, Friday, April 27, 2018. IF you can you should go meet her. She is special.

Statues Of Boston, In And Around The “Commons” & “Public Park” — Saturday, February 24, 2018.

I like statues, especially big, bold, imposing ones. So, what can I say. If I have a camera on me (which is invariably the case over the last few years) I am going to take pictures of any statues I encounter.

Growing up in Ceylon, in the 1950s — 1960s, a very close family friend was a Indian sculptor, of renown, who specialized in bronze. Actually my adoptive father had brought him over from India because we didn’t have any of his caliber or skills. I used to spend a fair amount of time hanging around his studio. So, there is a special place in my heart for good bronze statues of the kind that adorn Boston.

This was our trip on Saturday, to celebrate the 2018 Chinese New Year with Dim Sum, at ‘China Pearl’, in Chinatown. After the Dim Sum Teischan wanted to explore Boston Common & Public Park. I took most of these pictures on that walk which was around 2.5 miles in total.

Given that in at least the last 10 of my books I have stated in the Preface that ‘Typo’ is my middle name, I can relate to a somewhat Freudian typo such as this. What was Alexander or was it Regina thinking as they typed that caption? The mind boggles.

I have noticed that the U.K. Daily Mail, my all time favorite newspaper, that I read every morning, while lying in bed, drinking a cup of coffee and listening to CNBC, has quite a few typos of late. I fully appreciate, doing this blog, how easy it is for that to happen when you are typing like crazy to get something posted. What cracks me up is that they don’t get around to correcting them. They must, given the millions who read them, get feedback. It is cute. It amuses me and makes me realize that others too suffer from my impediment. It does, however, suck.

I was at Keene in my official capacity as a Granite State Ambassador (GSA) doing the ‘meet and greet’, registering pumpkins and at the end helping the crowds light the jack-o’-lanterns. Yes, of course, we knew HGTV was there. They were hard to miss. They came by out tend, given it was one of the official registration tents a number of times. I didn’t know they had taped me. We finally got around to watch the show (off the DVR) this evening. We were all joking as to who might appear since we all had a good chance, since we were all quite involved, especially at the end when the lanterns needed to be lit. The Deanna and the kids were here, there and everywhere lightning at 50. I am at about -11.00 (from the end).

Watching the program convinced all of us that to do this properly you need RFID and LED candles as I had prescribed.

That is ME. No escaping that. About -11 minutes from the end. That is the only shot that any of us are in. Click to access FULL HGTV ‘Pumpkin Wars’ episode on their Website as a 49 minute video.
