WHY Is Pope Francis Praying For An End To The Amazon Fires — Is God Unaware?

by Anura Guruge

I said it before, I will say it again (and again, and again …). Though I come from a family of ardent prayers, as I grew older I came to realize that I really did NOT understand how prayer was supposed to work — especially IF, like Pope Francis, you are praying to Almighty God, God the CREATOR.

So, here is my confusion.

  1. Doesn’t God know that the Amazon is on fire? Has he got to be told by Pope Francis?
    ///
  2. OK, so God won’t do anything until the likes of the Pope prays to him? [Seem like a pretty awful ego trip to I — on the part of the omnipotent God.]
    ///
  3. Now Pope Francis has prayed, why hasn’t God put out the fires at once? What is he waiting for. He is ALL POWERFUL. He has to have heard the Pope’s prayer. Unlike I, the Pope must have a direct line to God. He is God’s vicar on Earth.

As far as I can tell the Amazon is still burning and the pope prayer over 12 hours ago?

What gives?

Is it possible that the Pope’s prayers go unanswered?

If so, what chance have I got?

PLEASE help. Prayer confuses the bejesus out of I.

Do I really have to elaborate or explain. Maybe I should explain why I don’t post as many sunset pictures as I should. Simple answer is that by the time sunset comes I have usually taken by quota of pictures for the day! There is only so many I can take and publish a day. SMILE. Today, I made a special effort. Enjoy.

The Jaguar XJS V-12 (1989) Goes For A Run.

It is no secret that I use this Jaguar, my XJS, sparingly. Goal is to preserve it, in as excellent shape as possible, for as long as possible. Plus, it belongs to Teischan and it will be 3 years before she can drive it (legally).

She wanted to take it out. So, we took off the full body cover. Started the FIRST TIME. I keep the battery trickle charged year round. Put some oil, topped off the coolant, put the roof down and we were OFF.

It is a lovely car to drive! I feel privileged. The acceleration. Folks stay well behind once they see the acceleration from a stop. They don’t want to be embarrassed. Put it away with the hood down. That would mean we will use it again shortly. Stay tuned.

The XJ8 has been used quite a bit this Summer. Going to be using it again tomorrow.

TDS Telecom, To Their Credit(?), Still Prints Local Telephone Directories — Albeit Ultra Skinny Ones.

by Anura Guruge

It came in the mail Saturday. Thought it was a magazine. No. The 2019 Directory for this area. Cute. Yes, they have been doing printed directories every year or most years. But, they used to be more substantial. Yes, they have gone to a larger format. Previous ones were narrower and shorter.

I checked a few names I knew. They were all there.

They have done their best to pad it. Even includes a page on ‘TDS TV‘ channel listings.

Maybe they are legally or contractually obligated, and YES I appreciate that WE, as paying customers, eventually end up paying for the costs of printing these. But, this is a waste and an anachronism. Sure, there will be a few that still appreciate a printed phone directory BUT you are not going to find the phone numbers you want in it. That is the problem.

Canon EF 50mm f/1.8 STM Lens With ‘Canon EOS RP’ — Not Impressed; Actually Quite Frustrated.

by Anura Guruge

Click to ENLARGE. My Canon EOS RP with the EF 50mm f/1.8.

It could be I. That is always a possibility. But, this highly praised Canon EF 50mm f/1.8 lens has yet to impress I. True, I have only used it a few times and the light has been challenging much of the time. But, it has left me feeling very disappointed.

I find the focus, all aspects of it, far from satisfactory. Autofocus struggles on the EOS RP! That happens often, even in decent light. Manual focus isn’t easy.

It is nowhere close to the ease-of-use and image quality (I invariably manage to obtain without too much effort) from my Tamron 28 – 300mm Di VC PZD. Yes, that is a much more, i.e., 4x, more expensive lens but it also has 4 times the range. Yes, of course, the Tamron is bigger, bulkier and heavier. But, I think I will go back to having the Tamron on 99% of the time. Not worth trying to sell the 50mm. Just keep it I guess.

The Canon EF 50mm f/1.8 is $125, and as far as I am concerned it delivers at that price. Does NOT punch above its weight or price.

But, definitely a heads up. If you have an EOS RP check out this 50mm lens before buying it ‘blind’.

Will The ‘Canyon de Chelly’ Navajo See Even A Cent Of This $6.5 Million ‘Wells Fargo’ Settlement With ‘Navajo Nation’?

by Anura Guruge

Click to access the original from “The Hill”. Google for more.

My concern is very simple. Will individual Navajo, like those in ‘Canyon de Chelly‘ (some of whom I know), get any of this money as a stipend, or Will the ‘Navajo Nation‘ insist on spending it, on behalf of them, on supposed projects that will benefit them?

To be fair, I see the pros and cons of both ‘solutions’.

True, some of the Navajo, though not all, will just fritter away whatever they get, on trivials, and will have nothing to show for it in days if not the end of the first day. Yes, they can be irresponsible and juvenile with money. But, part of that is that many have never had that much.

On the other hand, though they are supposedly getting better, I do not trust the ‘Navajo Nation‘. I think they are irresponsible, often naive and (as with all organizations of this type) there is the inevitable corruption.

So?

I have never been (thankfully) a Wells Fargo customer. I know that they were forced to pay all sorts of restitution for all of their egregious crimes. What I do not know is whether some of these other settlements will DIRECTLY compensate Navajos who were cheated, abused and robbed directly. I want restitution, directly, for whatever they lost.

Well, I just wanted to get this out. I am powerless to do anything. I am but a concerned outsider thousands of miles away.

But, I care deeply for the Navajo and always want what is BEST FOR THEM.
