Sri Lankans Now Eating Rats?

by Anura Guruge

On my Facebook timeline — albeit with TRANSLATION enabled.

I, alas, can no longer read Sinhalese (or for that matter understand or speak it), though in my youth, 50-years ago, I was proficient enough to get a straight ‘A’, at ‘A-level’, in my Sinhalese exam.

So, whenever I see anything, all in Sinhalese, on my Facebook Timeline I have to invoke Translation.

The above is what I got.

I smell a rat.

Do you?

I Stand By My Claim That “Hotstar” Is NOT For True Cricket Lovers!

by Anura Guruge

Click to ENLARGE.

Pictures off my 47″ TV using my Google Pixel 2 phone.

OK, on Sunday (Day 2), I discovered that “Hotstar” live streams some of the IPL games, in full, and that there were full-length, versions of Match # 2 & Match #3. [Refer to images 1 & 2 above.]

But, NOT of Match #1. It says it is there, but all 10 hours of it is the IPL Auction! So, that is the bummer.

So, why am I still complaining?

Because, unless you watch ‘live’, which is not practical to most of us, you get SCREWED in terms of knowing the outcome of the match BEFORE you get around to watching it.

What fun is that in a T20?

So, here is the problem — and you can see it, clearly, in image 3 (above).

Before you can get to the replay you want, you are going to see ‘headlines’ like: “Ruthless Narine Slams 19-Ball 50“. So, now there is no suspense. You know Narine is NOT going to get out until he scores 50.

This is a bloody joke.

This IPL coverage is for those with ADHD and on drugs.

It is NOT serious cricket coverage. The cricket has been trivialized for the mobile phone set.

IF you are a genuine cricket fan like I, you will understand … you will appreciate.

This is NOT cricket!

Sinhala New Year (Avurudu) 2018 — Auspicious Times In The U.S.

by Anura Guruge

This is for all of you celebrating the Sinhala New Year in the U.S. and Canada. I don’t know of any, but I guess, given that we are everywhere, that there must be Sinhalese in Mexico and even further South.

Well the auspicious times are invariably given just in Sri Lanka time and that +10.5 time difference can get tricky to convert to U.S. time especially when you have to start with 2:04am. So, I did it for you — albeit just for Eastern. But, all of you know how to convert time from Eastern … plus it is easy enough.

So, here we go.

Dawn of the 2018 Sinhala New Year: Saturday, April 14th @ 2:04am (in Sri Lanka) —->> Friday, April 13th @ 4:34pm (U.S.: Eastern)

Lighting of the heart, and cooking first meal: Saturday, April 14th @ 5:41am (in Sri Lanka) —->> Friday, April 13th @ 8:11pm (U.S.: Eastern)

Commencing work, transactions & partaking in first meal: Saturday, April 14th @ 7:05am (in Sri Lanka) —->> Friday, April 13th @ 9:35pm (U.S.: Eastern)

Anointing with oil: Sunday, April 15th @ 11:04am (in Sri Lanka) —->> Sunday, April 15th @ 1:34am (U.S.: Eastern)

Departing for work: Tuesday, April 17th @ 6:28am (in Sri Lanka) —->> Monday, April 16th @ 8:58pm (U.S.: Eastern)

So, the Old Year, in the U.S., will be on Thursday, April 13th.

OK? Got that.

Happy Sinhala New Year 2017.

The 3rd New Year of the Year for I.
But you can never have too many.

Enjoy. Rejoice.
