‘The Immortal Life Of Henrietta Lacks’ The BOOK: More Incisive, Fulfilling & Illuminating Than Movie.

I saw the movie, serendipitously, when it was shown on HBO in April 2017. I had DVRed it because the title and HBO description of it intrigued me.

I did a post on my reaction to the movie on May 1, 2017. The movie, which was choppy, often hard to follow and disturbing in its portrayal of the Lacks family (who happened to be black) left me wanting to know more. I knew I had to read the book. I ordered paperback copy then and there.

I just finished reading it.

Good book. Well written. Fast paced, dramatic and with a lot of local color. I was very impressed with the author, Rebecca Skloot. She sure can write — and write well. She did a good job. My only gripe is that she, STILL, glossed over talking about the HeLa cells. I wanted more. More details. Maybe that would have been too ‘technical’ for the book.

The movie, and then the book, made me realize, to my chagrin and shame, that I really know very little about cells — in general. To I, that seems crazy. I really, over my, by and large misspent life, should have learnt more about cells. Yes, I do intend to try and rectify that. Cells are what makes ALL life on Earth possible. I have billions of them making up my body, BUT I know more about popes or Pluto than I know of the cells that keep me alive. What about YOU? Do you think you know all you should about your cells?

I now need to watch the movie again! I just ordered the DVD, from Amazon (Prime), for $9.96.

I was sad when I got to the end of the book. The book made you so much a part of the idiosyncratic Lacks family. You just wanted the drama to continue. Alas, too many died.

Sobering tale. Some very upsetting and disturbing episodes. How can such things happen in the US? Child abuse! The indignities suffered by blacks. Yes, I learnt loads. Parts of the book made me very sad and or angry. I am sure that there is till some of this ‘bad stuff’ happening in the black community. Such a shame.

You really should read this book. I urge you to. You will thank me for it.
