Android 8.1.0 (Oreo) New ‘Storage’ Management Tab Makes Accidental APP Deletion Easy!

by Anura Guruge

So the first image, at top, shows what the new Android 8.1.0 (Oreo) STORAGE management tab looks like. Different to what it used to be in prior versions of Android.

Up at the top of that tab there is the BIG BLUE BUTTON that says “FREE UP SPACE“.

When you press that you get the next screen with the filing cabinet with a drawer open … with the “Review Recent Items” link. Click that.

The you get the next screen showing APPS with memory usage next to it. Well, from the older Android versions that could be confused with CACHED data. So, you might just tick that assuming that this will remove the cached data given that we are in STORAGE — not APPs.

Not so. What it deletes is the APP itself!

Yes, the filing cabinet screen warns you of that … BUT who reads the fine print.

So, be warned. No warnings such as “Do You Really Mean To Delete This APP?

Just does it. Not even a CONFIRM screen.

This is poor.

When Android 8.1.0 gets rolled out BEYOND Pixel 2 (XL) phones I am sure a lot of people will run into this.

So, you have been warned.

This was true serendipity.

It was New Year’s 2018 & our 15th anniversary. We had gone to Portsmouth, NH, to eat somewhere ‘nice’ overlooking the water. Some of the restaurants in ‘Tugboat Alley’ were closed — no doubt because they must have been open late for ‘First Night’. Then I had the idea of going across the river to Kittery, Maine to see what they had next to the water. That is how we discovered “Warren’s Lobster House”. We have driven by it a few times and I have walked by it a few times too. But, we had never gone in.

We did ‘today’ — Monday, January 1, 2018.

Glad we did. GREAT EXPERIENCE. Our kind of place.

All the lunch/dinner meals come with soup and a salad bar — and the salad bar is GOOD. One of the best around here. Makes Ruby Tuesday’s look anemic.

Great service. Wine by the carafe.

We had the Lobster Rangoon special. That was not bad at all.

Teischan and I had salmon; hers plain mine with an amazing Maine blueberry glaze. Deanna had lobster stuffed haddock.

Food was good and there was enough. Great ambience, and even better views across the water.

Teischan had a fancy Sundae — which got rave reviews from her, and she knows her ice cream.

The attached ‘Gift Shop’ is cute and fun, and the ‘keys’ they give you to try and open the treasure chest entices you to visit. We bought some stuff.

Overall a warm, satisfying experience.

Will definitely recommend it to others.

I am already planning to go back! It was that good.

Made my day.
