December 17, 1903.

This has to be treated as one of the most significant dates of the 20th century and a red-letter day in all of human history.

The day we mastered powered flight and took to the skies. We haven’t stopped since then.

It seems ironic that this very day, 114-years later, Atlanta’s Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport, the world’s busiest airplane terminal, was crippled by a power failure as if to remind us how much we now rely on air transport.

They had chosen Kitty Hawk, North Carolina, for its consistent breeze and its forgiving, sandy beaches.

Who was piloting the plane had been determined by a coin toss.
