WOW. WOW. WOW.

What a match. After another amazing innings by Virat ‘Midas’ Kohli and 192 on the board I thought that India had it sealed and that my prediction, even from this morning, of the ‘Battle of the Raj‘, India v. England, was going to the Final of the ICC World Twenty20, #ICCWT20.

When Gayle went for 5, after 6 balls, I was convinced the Windies were screwed. Then Marlon ‘Bloody’ Samuels, yet again, played like girl having her first period and wracked by cramps.

I have always LIKED Lendl Simmons BUT had forgotten about him. He hadn’t played in any of the previous matches. I thought we was on the field as a sub. And he dropped a catch. But Lendl CAN BAT — as he demonstrated.

And Johnson Charles and Andre Russell. They didn’t even need Bravo or Sammy. AMAZING.

I did say, on Monday, that for the West Indies to beat India, at home, somebody would have to score 70+ of 180+. Lendl Simmons came close; 82 at 161 S/R. Andre Russell batted at 215 S/R.

Now the BIG question … did the Windies play their ONE BIG innings of the tournament. Will they have any gas in the tank for the Final on April 3?

It will be fascinating.

Thank YOU the West Indies. Sorry for the all the BAD things I have said about you in the last year. SMILE.

Was Panasonic Badly Blindsided By Sony With The RX10 III — The FZ1000 Detractor?

by Anura Guruge

sonypanarx10

Very strange that there were NO rumors of any kind about the Sony RX10 III — and as we know there are at least 3 credible Websites that do nothing but scour the world looking for new camera rumors.

Now it is also possible, given Sony’s clout and drive, that they PAID OFF sources and Websites NOT to talk about the RX10 III before it was announced.

The BIG question for I, as a Panasonic Lumix FZ1000 owner (and the owner also of a Panasonic Lumix LX100), is whether Panasonic was totally oblivious to the possibility of a RX10 III.

Notice that I used ‘detractor’ vs. ‘killer’ in my title. The FZ1000, as I have found, is one heck of a camera and it is going to 1/2 the price of the RX10 III — and for many that would be more of an incentive than the added 200mm (though it is a 50% increase).

I am sure Panasonic could match the RX10 III with a 600mm zoom FZ2000. BUT, I am not sure that would be enough.

What would REALLY make a difference is IF Panasonic came up with a Micro Four Thirds FZ with a 500mm or 600mm zoom. I guess all of the lens dynamics will make it a big camera. BUT that would be the ULTIMATE Bridge Camera.

And is this what the so called LX200 is … a Micro Four Thirds with a BIG ZOOM?

Has Israeli ‘Cellebrite’ Reverse-Engineered Some/All Of Apple iOS 8.x To Unlock iPhones?

Not sure whether Apple and others are being disingenuous here BUT from the time I heard of Cellebrite’s involvement with the FBI to bypass the “wrong password” retry safeguards it was very clear to me that Cellebrite MUST offer this service to others.

I also don’t think that the FBI was their first client.

It would appear that they have been unlocking, in terms of encryption, phones for some time now.

In the case of iPhones they might have reverse engineered some of the iOS source code at the MACHINE CODE instruction level (as opposed to C++ code). Reverse engineering code is doable with enough smarts and hard work.

What we now need is ENCRYPTED machine code! Something that I thought about 40 years ago, while working for IBM, around the same time I came up with my software authentication scheme (which is still used today) in 1978. Think about it. SMILE. It is doable.

Must Have Smart 2x Fast USB Car Charger With Car Finder APP Option.

by Anura Guruge

2X charging speed, designed in Germany

Between the Android pads the kids feel that they must have when travelling, Deanna’s camera and occasionally another Android phone/pad serving as a GPS we are constantly in need of FAST USB charging when we are travelling by car. I had a 4.8A/24W USB charger but that never seemed fast enough. The ZUS is faster and the mood lighting is way cool. I do NOT typically have a problem losing my cars but the free (built-in) Car Finder APP is neat to have and will amuse the kids. They will want the APP on their Androids.

Check it out. This is a serious USB car charger for those of us who have serious USB charging needs.

England Victorious Over New Zealand — Take A Bow — ICC World Twenty20, #ICCWT20.

by Anura Guruge

engvicnz

Well a “Battle of the Raj”,  ‘India v England‘, ICC World Twenty20 final can still be on the cards (and I have NOT looked at the outcome of the India v. West Indies Semi-Final #2.)

That was quite the upset. New Zealand had been unbeaten and had pulled off some amazing wins.

England was impressive. Once they dismissed the Black Caps for that low score I knew they had a very good chance of winning and they got off to a very good start. So it was not a gripping run-chase. My the time the Power Play was done you knew that New Zealand were screwed.

Mr. Selfridge, Season 4, Snuck Up On Us, With No Warning From PBS — Albeit To Our Delight.

by Anura Guruge

mrselfridge4svf

Click to access PBS homepage for “Mr. Selfridge” Season 4 with an embedded promo video.

Though we, as true devotees, watched all the 9 episodes of “Downton AbbeySeason 6 (alas, the final season) plus all of the other ‘milk-it’ shows that went before and after (e.g., the ‘BAFTA Awards‘ for the show) we did not see any trailers or promos for Season 4 (alas, also another final season) for ‘Mr. Selfridge‘. We only found out because our DISH DVR was programmed to record all new episodes of PBSMasterpiece Theater” and as such recorded Sunday’s episode, i.e., episode 1. I actually first thought that it was a rerun — having been convinced that Season 3 was the last.

We were wrong and we are delighted. We discovered “Mr. Selfridge” on Amazon Prime Video, serendipitously, after we had finished watching Seasons 1 to 5 of “Downton Abbey”, more or less nightly, on Prime. “Mr. Selfridge” was a great antidote for “Downton Abbey” withdrawal until we discovered, on British ‘Acorn’, the Australian “A Place To Call Home“. Teischan (then 9), who became quite the “Downton” expert, also knew “Mr. Selfridge” characters, storyline and plots very well. So we are all happy. I just checked that the other 8 episodes of Season 4 will be recorded. You can catch reruns of “Mr. Selfridge” Season 4 episode 1 on Saturday and Sunday and it is probably also on Roku. It is on Prime, albeit at $1.99 an episode.

Enjoy. We will. [I have been very familiar with the Oxford St. store since 1967 and for a few months in 1979 worked in an office just around the corner from the store.]
