Australian “A Place To Call Home”, As Good As “Downton Abbey”, Season 3 …

Click to access YouTube video. NEW ENDING for Season 2 so as to make Season 3 viable.

Yesterday evening during our ‘family TV hour’ I was scrolling through (British TV) Acorn, through our Roku 3, to see what new shows they had. On a whim, albeit with no great expectations, I said “lets check ‘A Place To Call Home’ to see if they have a Season 3”. Serendipity! There was a Season 3. We couldn’t believe it. I checked to see that they had not accidently relabeled Season 2 as Season 3. They had not. We were delighted. Especially the kids.

As I raved about here we think ‘A Place To Call Home’ is nearly as good as ‘Downton Abbey‘ (though the setting is not as grandiose) — and that is saying something because we are all “Downton” devotees.

We had NO idea that ABC (and the ‘A’ there stands for ‘Australian’ as opposed to ‘American’) had CANCELLED the show halfway through Season 2! That had to have been crazy. It is a good show. Now they have resurrected it and I am delighted that common sense prevailed. So they had to do a new ending for Season 2 so as to provide a more compelling ‘runway’ into Season 3. That was kind of weird. But we watched the new ending last night. Wow. Dramatic. We will start watching Season 3 tonight. 40 minute episodes. So Teischan insists that we can squeeze in 2 each night.

I just discovered that it is also available on YouTube. So you should be all set. Do yourself a HUGE favor and watch it. You WILL thank me for that advice.

I have always considered, biased as I will admit to being, that the ‘Blue Sapphire‘ (especially if it displays a star) is the world’s most beautiful gemstone and that Sri Lanka is the home to the world’s best, bluest, brightest and biggest blue sapphires. Growing up in Ceylon, 50 years ago, I saw lots of blue sapphires. Alas and alack we don’t have many anymore. I got Deanna a small stone when we got married 13 years ago, but I am not sure whether she wears it that often. That is the only blue sapphire we now possess. 18 years ago I was give a $3,000 pair of blue sapphire cufflinks — but I gave them back.

This is good for Sri Lanka. Somebody is going to be an even richer gem mine owner.

2016 Chinese New Year: UNH (Durham, NH) Miaohui (Temple Fair) On February 4.

by Anura Guruge

The UNH (Durham, New Hampshire), ‘Confucius Institute‘, as they did, with great success last year, will again host a Chinese Temple Fair, a Miaohui, on February 4th, 2016, to celebrate the Chinese New Year, the ‘Year of the Red Monkey‘. As it was last year it will be free and open to the public. I will provide more details as I get them. I just wanted to give you a heads up, as soon as I heard about it, so that you can mark it on your calendar.

Last year’s was an unqualified success and we had a ball.

I am already getting excited. Less than a month away.

Check out the pictures and videos from last year. Happy New Year.

Like the Loon, New HampshireHighland Games“, but in the winter and hence indoors. Some very familiar names, viz. Albannach, Searson, Charlie Zahm etc, albeit led by our perennial favorites, the evergreen “The Brigadoons” — playing multiple sessions on Saturday and Sunday. Some acts I have not heard of. Pretty decent prices too. Should be a good bash.

All The New Cameras Announced At CES 2016 To-Date — With Prices.

Amazon, knowing my interest in cameras (given that I check out cameras or lenses on a near daily basis), sent me an e-mail with this list of CES (Consumer Electronics Show) 2016 cameras.

It was useful. It was nice to see them all in one place and moreover it was useful to see the prices.

I was curious as to how much the APS-C (DX-Format) Nikon D500 was, given that it will be seen as the flagship for that genre — though I have no desire to buy a DSLR from Nikon or Canon. I am now more convinced than ever that mirrorless is the way to go. But it is useful to know $3,067 with a kit lens. Hhmmm. The $6,500 for the full-frame Nikon D5 was also illuminating, though that seems fair. The $700 for the 1″ sensor, 20 MP, 25 – 250 mm Panasonic Lumix ZS100K was interesting. Nearly as expensive as my Panasonic Lumix FZ1000.

Hope this helps. It should.
