This will change within minutes. I just happened to get a notification and catch it. I have been ‘here‘, i.e., having so called Amazon ‘best sellers‘, before. Doesn’t mean much at least to me because it sure does not give me ANY money or fame! But it is cool and I am not churlish. It is better to make such lists than not.

This list, in particular, is very humbling and significant to me. The book I have ‘usurped’ is MY Bible. J N D Kelly is my idol. The “Oxford Dictionary of Popes” is never far from my reach. When it is NOT on my desk it is positioned as strategically close to my right hand as you can get. It is the book that I reach out to — quite literally — the most. So to be ahead of that book is scary — though Professor Kelly, as he should, will outstrip me probably even before I post this post. As it happens I am also rather fond of the #2 book — by Yallop. Yes, I have it. It is right here — but not as strategically placed as the ‘Dictionary’. I read it c. 2007. IF I ever get the time I kind of have plans to write a better version of it!

But for now …

Really. To be honest. This is more amusing to me than ANYTHING else. That I could, for a brief moment, better than Kelly is BUT a joke. I know my place in the scheme of things.

These are the same folks, i.e., ‘Solar System Scope‘,
who gave us the mesmerizing Comet ISON visualization.

So definitely give this a try.

This comet, at least for us on Earth, is not that special. It was never had the potential of being a ‘great’ (like poor ol’ ISON) and it was certainly not a sungrazer. In reality it was just one of the, on average 200, comets now being discovered a year thanks to our automated sky surveys.

Other than being the first comet to have been discovered in 2013, C/2013 A1’s real claim to fame is that it is going to get VERY CLOSE to Mars on October 19, 2014. And in this case we still not talking cigars in that it is believed that it might only get within 25,700 miles of Mars — and that is measured from the center of Mars. That is still a fair distance. Astronomers are NOT expecting it to crash into Mars — i.e., for it to be captured by the gravitational pull of Mars.

This “Solar System Scope” simulation will give you a very realistic view of what you would see if you happen to be on Mars.

We as a family have yet to miss a single Sandwich Fair. As it happens Deanna and I used to go to the Fair, without fail, even before we met in 2002 — though we never saw each other, even when I used to be there for nearly the day selling raffle tickets, for a Harley, for Laconia Rotary Club. Not sure which day we will make it — though we know it won’t be Friday night when they have just the midway open for cheap rides. It is a 4-day long weekend for us, so there is plenty of scope. The Fair always falls close to Devanee’s birthday, on the 10th, and in past year’s we have even ‘done’ her birthday at the Fair.

OK. We will see YOU at the Fair — on one of those day. Enjoy.

Heating Oil In Central New Hampshire $3.19 A Gallon (If NOT Cheaper) — Time To Get Some.

Gas prices, thanks to a massive glut, are ‘depressed’ right now, across the board, across the world. We can see that in terms of gasoline (petrol to us) prices. I still think of it as ‘expensive’ BUT it is cheaper than it was a few months ago.

I called up my buddy, Steve, at Foley today, to order a couple of gallons now that colder weather is in the offing. We have a few dredges left (in our 275 gallon tank) from a delivery we had in the Summer. Given that this is now ‘winter’ as far as the NE oil companies are concerned I expected to be given a price with two significant ‘3’s, such $3.39. But, Steve volunteered, well aware of my continued dire pecuniary straits that heating oil is ‘at its lowest’ — though he, canny as ever, didn’t put any bounds to that statement. But, when he said $3.19 (cash price) even I realized that that wasn’t too bad. So I told him I will have 7.5 gallons as opposed to the 5 that I was going to order.

Just wanted to share that news with YOU — as a kind of Public Service Message.

IF Foley has heating oil at $3.19 (cash) a gallon you should be able to get it, cash, at roughly that price from others, around here — IF NOT CHEAPER. Foley never claims to be the cheapest — just the cheeriest. I am sure Fred Fuller is a full 10 cents cheaper, though I haven’t checked.

So just a heads up.

Well I know who is paying for his ultra-expensive, titanium-plated coverage now — YOU & I.

But, it got me thinking. He is a visitor. Yes, as anybody who has watched any Indian TV in the U.S., and there is tons of it on cable and satellite albeit typically not-for-free, will know there is, quite rightly and properly, a HUGE ‘health insurance for visitors’ industry. But, I am not sure how many people get it.

Maybe we should pass some new healthcare laws. If you are a non-resident [i.e., not a citizen or bona fide green card carrying resident alien] you can’t enter the U.S. without visitor health insurance. Come ON. This is motherhood and apple pie stuff.

So who do you think paid?

Plus he was given antibiotics? Antibiotics for a virus?

Come on?

I have two cousins who are doctors in Texas, be it in Austin.

Prescribing antibiotics when it is viral.

Wow. We get slightly better care in rural New Hampshire.
