Now that I am once again a Canon owner — and I am not as yet convinced whether I am proud of that or not — I get notifications from Canon, especially since I bought the inexpensive to begin with, Canon EOS Rebel T3i with 18-55mm IS II Lens, directly from Canon, refurbished.

When I was trying to make up my mind between Nikon, Canon and Sony I did see references that Canon was rapidly approaching this 100 Million Canon lens landmark. Then the other day I got the above e-mail saying that they did indeed reach it. Got me thinking. 100,000,000 is a fairly big number. In a way, at least for me, it is sobering. Wow. That many Canon EF lenses. Yes, it is over a period of 28 and I assume that at least 20 million of these lenses have now bitten the dust — BUT I may be wrong on that.

A lot of lenses and what would be fascinating is to get the average and median numbers on this. I would think the average will be in the 1.5 range, maybe a tad under that. But then there will be those, some professional, others just wishing they were, who have a dozen or more. I just have right now and I have YET to master that — mainly because I have yet to have had time to read the manual. Just found out, to my amusement and possibly slight chagrin, that the AutoFocus (AF) on the Canon is rather fancy, complicated, open to error and far from foolproof [though I have never forgotten the adage that I was taught at IBM 40 years ago: “you can’t make anything foolproof because fools are so ingenious”.

Anywho … just ponder and marvel. 100,000,000 Canon EF lenses. Wow.
