Yes, I have heard the rumors. Click on above IF you want more of the scuttlebutt about him putting on 20 pounds or breathing hard (and please note that I have refrained from making any jokes about that).
It is extremely normal for popes to take some time off in the Summer. Most couldn’t wait to get down to Castel Gandolfo — their (latest) summer residence. This pope, her his “I want to lead a simple life” mantra, has avoided visiting Gandolfo. But, here is yet another example of his “lack of resolve” (and I am trying to be nice). He has all the authority in the World to sell Castle Gandolfo or any other property owned by the Church. Sell Castel Gandolfo. It would make a World Class 8-star Resort. I am sure you are talking at least U.S. $50 million — most likely much more. That would help a bit with world poverty.
What is slightly strange is that the Vatican had already issued tickets for Wednesday morning audiences in July. Hhhmmm.
But, I for one do not take this short hiatus as anything too untoward. Popes are human though they might want us to think otherwise.
Him putting on 20 pounds, I think, goes with the job. Prior to coming pope, as the story goes, he cooked for himself on a single hot plate. As far as I know (given that he has yet to invite me for breakfast) he has breakfast and dinner at the Domus Sanctae Marthae — which is a ‘hotel’. But most days he eats lunch in the Papal Apartments. I am sure he is getting better food now than he was ever accustomed to. Yes, “OK”, with his half a lung he could be retaining fluids. But I am sure that ‘they’ can keep him going for another 15 years IF ‘they’ want to. And that is the rub. IF ‘THEY’ want to.
For today I can stand by that list. All the sentiments I expressed in that post are still 100% valid.
But, I will, as of today, start working on a better list of ‘NEXT POPES‘ after Francis. That, I think, is my job — though I will make sure I only spend 1/1,000 of the time and energy I did when I did that for Benedict.
Wonderful News: Lisa DiMartino Is Running Again For HER Belknap County, District 2 (Gilford & Meredith) Seat In New Hampshire.

This was wonderful, wonderful news. I heard the news late last week and was elated. WE so wanted her to keep on representing us (as in all of 47% in New Hampshire) in Concord because Lisa, as we knew, did such a wonderful job — especially when it came to all matters to do with kids, education and healthcare.
Thank YOU, Lisa.
Yes, I will take a modicum of credit for making sure that Lisa ran again. Lisa has a lot of family commitments and was concerned that she might not be able to devote the time and energy to both home and Concord as she wanted. Everytime I saw her, and in a few e-mails, I kept on assuring her that she will do fine and that she will, somehow, find the time and energy to do both important tasks. I know I was not alone. We are so happy.
I have already e-mailed her to let her know that WE will go door-to-door for HER as we did, with great pleasure and success, in 2012. WOW. She is so well liked in Gilford. As soon as you told someone in Gilford that you were on their doorstep to talk about Lisa DiMartino a smile would cross their lips. She transcended petty party politics in Gilford. I am sure she will do great again in Gilford and Meredith. I will know. Having visited at least 300 doors in the 2008 and 2012 campaigns I have got good at doing my own, ‘in the head’ polling. In 2012, from the start, I knew Lisa had it in the bag. Was not sure about any of the others — but with Lisa I was 100% confident. But, we will start afresh in 2014.
Yes, at a MINIMUM Devanee will do visibility for Lisa, alongside Lisa I assume, at Gilford, as she did in 2012. She adores Lisa. So that will be good.
I saw that Andrew Hosmer just won a prestigious award by N.H. ‘nurses’ (I think). That is GREAT. He has been a wonderful, exemplary Senator. Thank YOU, Andrew. Yes, we will pound the pavement for you TOO.
Had a brief chat with our Hannaford pharmacist and N.H. Senate Candidate Richard Leonard on Father’s Day — mainly to wish him a Happy Father’s Day. He is doing well and his campaign is going well. So that is great news too.
I see that the ‘RINO‘ has decided to run again. I hope the Republicans treat him with the contempt he deserves. But here is the funniest thing. All the Democrats are so glad he is running. They even tell me that I should help him! They consider him a de facto Democrat!

I was asleep and totally oblivious. [Our security system should have beeped to say it was on backup power.] I like outages that happen while I am asleep — as long as the power is back when I deem to wake up around 8:20 am. Not much interrupts my sleep. I sleep the sleep of the “mind at rest” — have most of my life.
As far as I know this is the first PSNH outage (we have experienced) in Alton, N.H. since November 27, 2013 (day before Thanksgiving). I try to document PSNH and TDS outages here so that we all have some kind of record. Hence this post.
If the last outage was indeed in November we have done good. Possibly I screwed up and missed an outage.
Not sure what this morning’s outage was all about. Nothing, as is always the case, on PSNH’s Website.
It is possible that it was some kind of scheduled downtime for some maintenance or to move some stuff around.
Deanna called and reported the outage.
She was just glad it came back at 6:30 just ahead of when the kids have to start getting ready for school.
So as outages go this was not disruptive. So just a heads up IF you, like I, slept through the whole thing.
Sad To Report That Dr. James (Jim) Eakin, THE BEST Eye Doctor In Central New Hampshire, Retired Today.
by Anura Guruge
1. Dr. James (Jim) Eakin, THE BEST … — Sep. 26, 2013.
We just heard this morning.
We are very sad and distressed.
He was BEYOND good.
A great loss to New Hampshire.
He did so much, pro bono, for children.
We saw him two weeks ago on June 5th. Deanna had an eye exam, and as is always the deal, I went in with her and chatted with Jim in-between him studiously doing his ever so thorough exam.
We talked about the usual things: popes, tennis, Newport, ‘friends’ from Rotary (in particular ‘John‘) … He said he was having issues with his hip. He had stopped playing tennis in March — which we figured was the first time he had ever stopped playing tennis.
And then this call this morning. He has retired!
Teischan had an appointment with him next Tuesday.
Just talked to THE ‘John‘. He had just heard the news too. He had known Jim for 30 years longer than I. So he managed to get more information than had Deanna.
