Alton Bay Ice Airport On Lake Winnipesaukee, N.H. Gets An Early Start In 2014.
by Anura Guruge
We were approaching Alton Bay, N.H. from Gilford when I spotted two planes low above the lake.
As we got to the Bay one of them, the one with the red stripe, was landing. I parked opposite the ramp to the Lake to take the pictures. The other plane was already there.
From the little I know this is a tad early for the Airport On Ice per se to be operational. Typically it happens around the Valentine’s Day weekend, which per my reckoning is 3 weeks out. There is nothing to stop pilots from landing on the lake. So this could have been just an ad hoc outing. The ice seems thick enough though I am sure, but not certain, that I saw open water on the Broads. Given the warm weather we have had for the last week that is possible. I would assume that it will freeze over. I was on this lake the last two instances when we didn’t have a complete freeze. I even used to walk to the edge, on the ice with Ulysses.
So this is just a heads up.
Here is a video on YouTube, from 2012, on a plane landing at the Ice Airport.
