Of course this is not the first time this has happened. I know that I have heard, just in the last year, of other fatalities involving those returning from pilgrimages — and to be fair, it is religion agnostic.
But, it always confounds me. Yes, yes, I know folks are going to tell me the usual mantra: God does not micro-manage and Free Will. Lets get ‘Free Will’ out of the way. Other than the Free Will of the drivers involved, I don’t think that the passengers had any Will in these disasters. The micro-management part, however, always intrigue me. I assume, though I do not know for sure, that these folks that go on pilgrimages pray when they are at the pilgrimage site. But, what are they praying for?
Though I grew up in a culture, and, moreover, in a household, obsessed with prayer and the ‘taking of vows’ (the next logical step: i.e., ‘I will give you this if you give me that‘), I quickly saw the shortcomings of this philosophy when I was around 18. That is when I stopped being a Buddhist — the religion that I grew up in. So, I basically became areligious — though I am fascinated by religion, those that believe in religion and the protocols of religion. That is why I am (still) an active papal historian, have written 7 books about popes and plan to write another starting in the next month.
Given that I do know the nuts-and-bolts of certain religions, e.g., Christianity and Buddhism, better than most that practice them, some beliefs that some have distress me. I am happy IF those beliefs provide the living with succor and relief. But, given that I am very au fait with purgatory, I cringe when I hear people talking about the recently deceased being with God. That is not what the ‘church’ (with a capital ‘C’ or otherwise) teaches. Lets not forget that just 2 weeks ago ‘the Church’ said that you can reduce the amount of time you spent in purgatory if you followed the Pope’s tweets from Brazil! Lucky for me, I don’t have to worry about such stuff.
This stuff does bother me, because I do think. I do analyze. I do try to rationalize. To me things have to make sense — which is why I love the movie above. That movie makes sense.
Anyway. Not trying to upset anyone. Just what goes through my mind. Think about it. Thinking is good. Thinking, as far as I am concerned, is the second greatest physical pleasure in life — next to sex, of course (while thinking during sex is divine).

See July 15, 2013 post as to why I have cut back the rants to one or two a day.
#153. Saturday morning I was watching 202, i.e., CNN. I then wanted to watch local news. So punched in 9. ‘9’ appeared at the top as the selected channel. Then the TV screen (and this is on the Genie ‘piece of garbage’ Mini) went black. Dead. Nothing. Nothing. NADA. Just a dead screen. Happened before. Had to use Channel Down. Got Channel 7. Then had to use Channel Up to get 9. Worked fine the 2nd time around.
#154. Genie ‘piece of garbage’ Mini: overall performance is so slow that when you are scrolling down the TV GUIDE it can’t keep up with the Go Up (or Go Down) entries on the remote. So they are buffered. Every once in awhile it catches up … and then goes crazy … does like 20 up (or down) motions at once! It is so pathetic.
#155. Selecting FAVORITES, especially on the Genie ‘piece of garbage’ Mini, takes for ever and a bit longer. You punch the ‘up arrow’ expecting to get the selection box. Nothing. Nothing. NADA. Just when you think it never got it and are getting ready to punch it again, the box comes up. We are talking frozen molasses slow. It is like the Genie is constipated — solid. The Genie and the Genie Mini are not ready for Prime Time. They are still in the early stages of development — riddled with bugs, like maggots on an old hamburger. Unmitigated junk.
#156. I can’t be 100% sure on this so I am listing this with a caveat. On Saturday night, I am sure (I think), that I scheduled Genie ‘piece of garbage’ Mini to record a Zack Brown special. Typically I do all of my recording requests, downstairs, on the Genie. Well, next morning, i.e. Sunday, I went looking for it. Not recorded. Now it is possible that I screwed up. I don’t think so, but I will give DirecTV the benefit of the doubt on this one.

Spend well over 90 minutes with GoDaddy support on the phone and on e-mail on Friday trying to get MY Online Storage (i.e., File Folder) problem fixed.
Doesn’t look like it is going o get fixed. And as they repeatedly point out, I can still access my files and upload new files. So, as far as THEY are concerned this is not a bug. That I have to re-logon is not really their problem!
Deanna and Devanee have both been using Google Drive, with Google Docs to boot, for the last few months — fairly successfully at that, though they are still coming to terms with Google Docs. I steered them on this route because so that they can start using ChromeBooks when their PCs pack up.
So, I was the lone hold out using GoDaddy Online Storage — and paying for it too! I have been using FF for nearly a decade.
I still have a ton of stuff on there. But, I have quite a few months already paid for. So I will slowly move stuff to Google. Since what I mainly save are Word documents I don’t have that much volume. 15 GB, what Google gives you for FREE, should be more than plenty. I don’t think I even use 5 GB right now.
So just a heads up. It was pretty easy enough to get going. Since I use Chrome, and I stay logged on to Google, all day, it was a piece of cake. You have to hand it to Google. They really make it easy. Yes, it is easy to become a Google junkie.
