We have, alas, never been to ‘First Night‘ in Portsmouth, NH. Though we all like Portsmouth the prospect of driving back home after midnight on New Year’s doesn’t hold much appeal.

That said, we have been to Portsmouth a number of times of New Years day, January 1; our wedding anniversary. So we have seen what is left of the ice sculptures.

Pretty sure we won’t make it to First Night in Portsmouth this year. We seem committed to Wolfeboro, which has the attraction of offering 2x fireworks and only being 25 minutes away (with no traffic to contend with).

There is a chance we will go to Portsmouth again on January 1, 2013. We will have to do something special. It is our 10th wedding anniversary and so many people said that we wouldn’t last the year, just because we met online and got married 6 weeks to the day, Wednesday to a Wednesday, of first making contact.

Us with the ‘on the house’ Santa at Loudon last year. It was fun. I plan to go this year too, though Deanna wasn’t that impressed. She is hard to please. Click to ENLARGE.

We went last year. The kids and I liked it, but, in general, contrary to all indications otherwise, I am easy to please. Deanna thought it was OK, a one time deal. Well, I plan to go again, if nothing else to get a better feel and view. Last year was our first time — and it is possible that it was the first time they did lights too. So it took me a few minutes to get my bearings and understand their thinking. For example we were at ‘Day 5′ before I worked out that it was the ’12 Days of Christmas’! To start with it just looked like individual displays. After that we were on the lookout. So when we got to the zoo, we were all on board. Ideally they should let you go around as many times as you want, or have a $5 extra charge for repeat trips. I would have done a repeat.

The lights are on until January 5. Late last night (actually very early this morning, like 12:20 am) I had a quick look at the Website and misread the date: it registered in my tired brain as December 5, as opposed to January 5. I thought that that was incongrous, closing that early. So I went and checked again now. I am glad that it was my mistake. We probably won’t be able to make it till close to Christmas. That might be OK. Might be something to do between Christmas and New Year’s. I will keep you posted. Cheers.

Kate’s ‘Prank Call’ Nurse Commits Suicide! That Is Terrible. Nobody Blamed Her, Definitely Not The Royals. I Am Shocked.

I am at a loss. As a Brit, deep down, I knew that none of the nurses duped by the Aussies would get disciplined — and that the Royals would maintain a stiff upper lip without censuring those who thought they were doing the right thing. As somebody who enjoys practical jokes, it distresses me that a bit of innocent fun could lead to this; she was the mother of 2 kids. Possibly there is more to this than we currently know. While she might have been upset, this was not ‘huge’. But, she might have been new to the U.K. I wish Prince William had taken a minute to talk to the two nurses and tell them that it was ‘OK’. But, he probably thought that it was not necessary. Yes, U.K. hospitals need to have a diluted form of the U.S. ‘HIPPA‘. I don’t know what to say. This is terrible.

Click to read story in the very respectable, very proper, U.K. ‘The Telegraph’. There is also a video of the statement made by the hospital.

Read more and see more pictures in the U.K. ‘Daily Mail’, my preferred U.K. newspaper of all time — a nice cross between ‘high brow’ and ‘tabloid’.
